About Louise Allison

Born in Norfolk UK, i met my Husband in Australia and after getting Married in 2002 we moved to Madeira where my husband is originally from. We really enjoy living on this beautiful little Island. Our passion is renovating properties, turning something old and run down into a new stylish home to rent or sell!

Louise Allison purchased this apartment in 2011

Why Louise Allison chose Madeira

The Docks just spoke to us when we first found it in 2008. A ruin that was literally crumbling away & desperately in need of some love & attention. At one time it was the tallest stone house in Madeira & one of the first houses to be built in this little harbour village. Finally after a few years we returned to Paul do Mar & managed to locate the owner, some how it was meant to be ours, it has been a wonderful project restoring the house & bringing it back to life again.

What makes this apartment unique

Every room in this property has amazing ocean views, it´s light, spacious & has so much character. The location next to the small harbour & beach is really unique & the scenery is beathtaking. The benefits of staying in an area like this mean you are close to nature, walking & really getting to experience what Madeira is all about. it´s also a great base to explore the rest of the Island or just chill out on the terrace by the sea. We have really focussed on things like, comfy beds & sofas, quality fixtures & fittings & fantastic showers with lots of hot water after all those Levada walks! Our philosophy is that we do not expect our guests to stay anywhere that we wouldn´t really enjoy ourselves!

Good for a short stay

  • 4 of 5

We spent 7 weeks on Madeira Island to escape from the Canadian winter. During our research we found Louise and her properties in Paul do Mar and Funchal.

Though we enjoyed our stay in Paul do Mar the 2 week stay was too long considering the facilities and location. Paul do Mar was not equiped with Laundry facilities or a place to hang clothes. Paul do Mar is a quiet fishing village with a large population of locals living in social housing, (only location like this on the island). Services are limited with a hotel at the far end of town where you can dine, small bars and cafe a small store and food trucks with Bread and vegetables. Though the property was marked as Private, the locals used the walkway on a regular basis and it was situated beside the start/finish of a hiking trail. The veranda was ok but was shared by all (including smokers) and the seating was not comfortable or enough if all apartments were full. It would have been a nice addition to have a barbeque located here. We found the kitchen facilites lacking with no tea pot, limited knives and cooking utensils. The beds were comfortable the bathrooms clean and well laid out.

For a short stay this would be the perfect location to access this side of the island, but not really ideal for long stays as the facilities and the size of the accommodation ie the living room small, it was fine for 2.

Owner's Response: I really appreciate you taking the time to make a review and take all your points onboard, very helpful! My response here does not change in anyway some of your negative experiences but hopefully will help to show that we are serious about our rentals and very much take onboard our guests comments. Finally we have the 2nd stage of our project approved for the front of The Docks so soon our future guests will be able to enjoy a laundry with washing machine, drying area & more outdoor facilities with sun loungers and separate seating areas. The pathway and entrance in front of The docks will then be changed for private access only as it is still currently classed as a "Vereda" a small public pathway. We´re really sorry these things were not completed when you came to stay with us, renovating The Docks was relatively quick and straight forward but because the 2nd phase in-front is a new project we have had to wait for everything thing to be approved. Tea pot now in the kitchen & i have gone through all our utensils to check if there is anything else we can add, it is essential to have a well equipped kitchen especially if you enjoy to cook. We really hope that as tourism develops in this area we will see new restaurants and business´s opening, it was only a few years ago that Paul do Mar & Jardim do Mar were only accessible by boat and the Levada walk that you mentioned that starts and ends behind the harbour is the original pathway leading up to the village of Prazers that locals used to get from village to village, it is a popular walk with many tourists. The government here in Madeira have provided a number of areas with social housing around the Island, this one which is at the opposite end of the village to The Docks was built for the local residents and probably has the best ocean front position of any social housing i have ever seen, they are very lucky! After your 7 weeks here you really had the chance to explore and get a feel for the Island, we´re very happy to hear your planning to return this year & escape the Canadian winter again, have a great time on your next visit and once again thanks so much for coming to stay at The Docks and The Villa in Funchal, really appreciate your business and it was great to meet you both!

The best holiday ever

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week at The Docks in August. The house is new, well decorated with a fully-equipped kitchen, where we cooked several dinners. Beds were comfortable with high quality sheets and the large shower offered us many relaxing moments. Our favorite moment of the day was watching the sunset while drinking a glass of wine. Truly outstanding!

Everything was handled professionally. Louise and Raul were the best hosts and were always ready to give us nice tips about Paúl do Mar.

Having a holiday by the sea in such a beautiful property was really a fantastic and relaxing experience that we want to repeat.

Modernes Ambiente trifft Fischerromantik

  • 5 of 5

Diesmal in Funchal.

Traumhaus an Traumlage

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5
