About the property

Villa Settecentesca

The villa and her cottages Orange, Lemon and Agave are located in Bagheria the summer residence of old aristocratic Sicilian families. In the same area you can see 7 others beautiful historical villas. Some of them are now open to the pubblic. The three Cottages have nice independent patios surrounded by a Mediterranean garden. The interior decoration is renewed but in a classical style. The popular films 'Nuovo Cinema Paradiso' and 'Baharia', directed by Tornatore, have been located in a Bagheria of a hundred years ago.....

About The Owner

We live in northern Italy, Spain and USA but we love Sicily and once a year we come back to our roots where the family of Princes Moncada di Paternò came in 1400 from Spain as Vicekings of Sicily. We love the colors the monuments the food and the beauty of our island and we hope others will enjoy them too

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1745

Why The Owner chose Bagheria

Family property

What makes this cottage unique

the villa is right in the centre of town, so very handy for shops, cafes, restaurants, etc. Bagheria is not a tourist town, but for those that want to experience real Sicily it's an excellent place to soak up the atmosphere, go to nearby beaches where only the locals go, and also to travel around the sights in the Palermo area, and experience plenty of variety in nearby beaches, towns, churches and so on.

Charming and Comfortable Cottage

  • 4 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Agave Cottage and would happily recommend it to others. Aloisa is a welcoming and attentive hostess and was concerned to ensure our comfort and satisfaction throughout the week we spent there. Bagheria is in many respects a good location from which to explore this area of Sicilia. Palermo is easily accessible – go by train, not car – while there are plenty of other sites and places to see and visit that will satisfy many tastes. The scenery of the area, with coastal hills descending to an azure blue sea, is stunning.

The cottage accommodates two with comfort. The bedroom and living area are both of a generous size, while there is a shower/w.c. and a small kitchen. There is no washing machine, although we were given the use of one in an adjacent cottage that was unoccupied for the week. WiFi is available and is adequate for Skype. Outside, the veranda/patio area is a pleasant place to sit and eat – although mosquitos and ants are an ever present summer hazard as elsewhere in this part of the world – and guests are given access to a large swimming pool during morning and afternoon hours. The whole is set in the attractive grounds of a large villa located right in the centre of Bagheria, having the aura of an island of tranquillity amidst the bustle of the town.

One note of caution: as elsewhere in Sicilia, local roads and driving habits can seem chaotic and intimidating to the uninitiated. Pre-setting the villa’s location in a sat nav and strong nerves are both highly desirable.

Immerse yourself in a real Sicily experience

  • 5 of 5

A friendly welcome from Aloisa as soon as we arrived and throughout our holiday Aloisa was most helpful with anything that we asked for. The accommodation was so different from any "normal" apartment, being in the grounds of the charming Villa Tabia, a real piece of Sicilian history. The cottages had good modern amenities with plenty of private space outdoors. The swimming pool was superb, amongst trees and a well established garden, a real peaceful haven that we relaxed in at the end of every day, away from the chaos & bustle of Bagheria. Surprisingly, the villa is right in the centre of town, so very handy for shops, cafes, restaurants, etc. For anyone not familiar with Sicilian driving, it can be a scary experience that is not for timid drivers, but we survived 2 weeks and 1500km without a single bump to our brand new Fiat 500 hire car. If you want somewhere to immerse yourself in to Sicily for a week or two this is highly recommended.

Only "okay"

  • 3 of 5

I wouldn't return. It's not bad, it's just not "nice". The value for money is low compared to other places we stayed on our two week tour of Sicily. The city itself is pretty uninteresting, so we just wanted a nice an quiet place to hang out, which it seemed Villa Trabia would be, based on the pictures and on the description. But in reality you can hear the city all the time (music, traffic, voices).

Furthermore, the cabins could easily be made more interesting to hang out at with some updated outdoor decor and furniture.

The apartment itself was quite alright, with only minor things missing in the kitchen (for instance a knife that wasn't broken and unable to cut anything).

Pool was shared with 8 other families, making it a bit crowded at times, and the sunbeds were broken. However, we had the pool for ourselves a few times, and then it was really nice and relaxing.

Host (Angela) was nice and helpful and had good recommendations about restaurants and beaches.
