About the property

Villa Settecentesca

The villa and her cottages Orange, Lemon and Agave are located in Bagheria the summer residence of old aristocratic Sicilian families. In the same area you can see 7 others beautiful historical villas. Some of them are now open to the pubblic. The three Cottages have nice independent patios surrounded by a Mediterranean garden. The interior decoration is renewed but in a classical style. The popular films 'Nuovo Cinema Paradiso' and 'Baharia', directed by Tornatore, have been located in a Bagheria of a hundred years ago.....

About The Owner

We live in northern Italy, Spain and USA but we love Sicily and once a year we come back to our roots where the family of Princes Moncada di Paternò came in 1400 from Spain as Vicekings of Sicily. We love the colors the monuments the food and the beauty of our island and we hope others will enjoy them too

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1745

Why The Owner chose Palermo

Family property

What makes this cottage unique

the villa is right in the centre of town, so very handy for shops, cafes, restaurants, etc. Bagheria is not a tourist town, but for those that want to experience real Sicily it's an excellent place to soak up the atmosphere, go to nearby beaches where only the locals go, and also to travel around the sights in the Palermo area, and experience plenty of variety in nearby beaches, towns, churches and so on.

The first impression of Orange Cottage was better than the website. The furnishing and fit out of the cottage was done with care, and in keeping with its surroundings. Both the outside sitting area and the pool were much bigger that suggested by the pictures. It is one of 6 or 7 self contained single story units tucked away in the corner of the grounds of a splendid Villa on substantial grounds (3-4 HA) right in the centre of Bagheria. Check out Google earth. The large green area which is easily 3-4 street blocks wide is Villa Trabia.

One limitation alluded to in another review is the size of the kitchen, but do you want to cook on holidays? Think of as a galley on a yacht, fully fitted but compact. The large fridge freezer is sufficient to hold as much food and drink as any family needs. If you must cook there is a 4 burner hob, oven and microwave.

Bagheria is a bustling, lively Sicilian town. It is not a tourist trap, this is the genuine article. Don’t expect multiple language menus. There are many good restaurants within walking distance including a Michelin starred one 5 minutes from the gate. Compared to the south of France we were pleasantly surprised at both the quality, and how reasonable the prices were. Typical meal for two Cote D’Azur €100, Sicily €60 or less! Try Trattoria Don Ciccio, or Matahari Bistrot

The owner was on hand and very helpful. The garden has a supply of tomatoes; you simply pick them and eat. Another lovely touch was the welcome pack.

The cottage is 5 minutes from the Autostrada and a trip to the Sicilia Outlet is recommended. 140 + shops, especially for men. The train to Palermo is cheap (€5 return), frequent, so do not think about driving there. I would also recommend not to blindly follow the sat-nav. Some of the streets are extremely narrow, made worse by 4 metre cars in 3 metre spaces. Better to stick with the wider streets, and let the sat nav recalculate the route until you find your way around. Did I mention driving in Sicily? Simple, don’t stop, show no fear, and keep moving. Really it is no worse than anywhere else, just go with the flow.

In conclusion, a great place to stay. Convenient to all of the beaches, Palermo, and further afield. Equally once you enter the gates, park the car; you are away from the hustle and bustle of life.

A lovely and peaceful cottage with great character

  • 4 of 5

We really loved our stay here. This little house was deliciously cool and comfortable in the unexpectedly hot October weather, and we really enjoyed being able to sit out on our terrace and use the gorgeous swimming pool. The owner, Aloisa, was friendly and helpful, showed us a short cut through the garden to the supermarket and drove us to the station when we left.

Though the bedrooms and living room were spacious, the kitchen was very, very small, and the bathroom pretty tiny too - although to be fair we could see that was the case from the photos! We loved the way the house is decorated with interesting prints and artworks - it feels much more homely that way.

One of the best things about our stay was that we were able to do without hiring a car, as we could walk to the railway station for the train to Palermo, and eastwards along the coast to Cefalu, too. It's quite a trek, though, especially coming home uphill from the station after a long day of sightseeing; it's worth noting that there are no taxis available, and we saw no buses, either. Bagheria has a couple of decent places to eat, but not much else of interest. We weren't able to get to the nearby beaches easily - you'd need a car for that I think.

We would definitely come again!

An Enthralling Step Back in Time

  • 5 of 5

We booked Orange Cottage as Bagheria served as a great place to explore both Palermo and Cefalu. In addition, our two teenage children could easily access the town for coffee, ice cream and a general wander. In truth, we didn't really know what to expect. Aloisa described the property as a cottage in the grounds of an old aristocratic mansion house (in the middle of a town!). Faded charm and a reminder of past glories. The cottage was simple but extremely clean and comfortable and furnished with old antiques which suited the feel of the property. Ideal for a family of four and a great outside area which was bigger than the picture on-line.The kitchen was small but everything was provided for so not a problem. The pool was great and we never really saw anybody else so had it all to ourselves. We could wander the grounds and only imagine what it was like in it's former life. Alois invited us to pick tomatoes, basil, limes and oranges from the garden and this gave a feeling that we where part of something special. Amazingly, once outside the huge main gates we were in a bustling and traditional Sicilian town. The contrast was fabulous and we all felt privileged to be living on the 'other side'. The main street was seconds away and mostly closed to vehicles. Shops, cafe's, butchers all on hand. We found a couple of excellent restaurants (Fratelli Piombino booked by Aloisa) which the children labelled' best they have been to'. Great food and service. A super coffee and cake cafe yards from the front gates.

Away from the town, Palermo was 20 minutes by train which was easy and convenient. Cefalu also great and easy to drive or train. Both a must see. So, in summary a place full of charm, and a real Sicilian experience. Aloisa, was truly helpful and quick to respond to any requests or needs. Always engaging and happy to share the history of the family house. If you fancy something delightfully different this is it. Fully recommended by the whole family.

The villa was very easy to find and we had a warm welcome by the owner It was well equipped and was very clean . The rooms were comfortable .The patio had a good size table and there was a lovely cane settee to relax after a day site seeing . There were good resturants locally and also takeaway pizza and chicken

The villa was in a good location to visit the top part of Sicily and it was close to the train station so visiting Palermo very easy.

We would recommend the cottage to our family and friends.

Lovely cottages and lovely owners!

  • 5 of 5

We booked with friends and so rented Agave and Lemon cottages for 2 weeks in July.

We were very impressed with the gardens, the cottages and the owners, who were extremely friendly and helpful, even leaving us a welcome pack of local produce.

The pool was without doubt the best we have seen, and the gardens were lovely, providing plenty of shade and privacy.

The cottages are in a very good location, just a short walk from the centre of Bagheria, and we had no trouble in finding very good local shops and restaurants.

Palermo is only a short distance away and we used the very cheap and efficient local train service to avoid taking our car into the city centre.

A relaxing and enjoyable holiday - recommended.

Lovely Villa

  • 4 of 5

My family had an excellent time during our stay made possible by the very kind hospitality of the owners and the splendid setting of the cottage in the grounds of the villa as well as the range of interesting places to visit and excellent local food. The owners and the staff on the estate were very friendly and helpful. There was a “welcome pack” of bottles of water, wine, bowls of figs and tomatoes, butter, jam, pasta, coffee, tea, milk which was a lovely gesture and gave a very positive first impression. We were also received local guide books which were very welcome and the free Wifi worked well.

The back gate provides access to a nearby supermarket where there was an extensive range of food at very reasonable prices. The recommended local restaurant– Mimmo Buttitta - was excellent with delicious pizzas, fish and meat dishes. We would certainly eat there again!!

The location of the cottages on the estate in amongst the lemon and orange groves is delightful with a little path up to the pool and terracing which is a lovely setting. We used the outdoor terrace, table, chairs and deckchairs every day and this is one of the things which made the holiday special – being able to eat and drink and relax outside surrounded by beautiful plants and trees away from the bustle of the town.

Within the cottage the bedrooms ware spacious, the beds comfortable and there is plenty of storage space for clothes etc.. The living room is also large and had everything we needed, with plenty of room for sitting and relaxing. The bathroom was big enough for our purposes, although the shower was a little on the small side. The supply of pool towels was a very good idea.

The only area for improvement is the kitchen which is compact and it is a little awkward finding enough space to prepare food – chop vegetables, salad, prepare meat etc. The cooker was also lacking in shelving which we only discovered on our last night so was probably just an oversight when preparing the cottage for use.

The only other issue was a power cut on the last night, possibly as a result of an overload on the electricity supply in the cottage. This was quickly resolved by the owners but is certainly something it is important to try and sort out for the long term.

Overall we were extremely happy with our visit and have already recommended these holiday cottages to our friends
