Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

Rural house near Montanchez, Caceres, Extremadura, Spain - Peaceful And Secluded Setting, Surrounded By Unspoilt Countryside, Perfect For Walking And Relaxing

The house is set in a peaceful walled three acre olive grove with shaded areas of cork and holm oak. We designed the house for outdoor living - the covered terrace is almost as large as the house and has a sofa to relax and table and chairs for outdoor dining - all with fine views of the Sierra de Montanchez with its Moorish castle and Catholic abbey.

Surrounded by unspoilt scenery and wildlife. There is excellent walking and mountain biking from the front door, along a network of paths and caminos. It is perfect for bird watchers with vultures, eagles, bee eaters and golden orioles. Or simply relax in the sun or on the large covered terrace with a sofa and hammocks.

ACCESS: The house is reached by a 1.3 km country track which is in places narrow and rough. It is passable for all cars (except low slung sports models) and needs to be driven slowly. It is not suitable for vehicles wider/longer than a standard transit van. It is very private, no other cars pass the house.

Inside is an attractive living/dining room with a well equipped kitchen area. A log burning stove heats the house during cooler months, there are cooling fans for use during hot weather. Water is heated by gas.

WINTER : a large wood burning stove provides heating for the house.

French doors lead onto the large covered terrace with lovely views of the Sierra, a sofa and table and chairs for alfresco dining.

ARRIVAL is Saturday, but at certain times of the year we can be flexible. Please contact us with your preferred arrival and departure date.

NEW 2017 - we offer mountain bike hire, guided hikes, activities (information sent with confirmation letter)

About Noelle Griffiths

Noelle Griffiths is an artist who paints and makes artist's books. She and her family live in Hafod y Llyn, the old gamekeeper's cottage on a 30 acre estate in the Snowdonia National Park, North Wales. Hafod Cottage (close by but out of sight) was the old stables and dog kennels for the estate and was renovated in 1992 as a holiday cottage. Noelle teaches art part-time in Wales and Spain.

Finca Acehuche is set in a three acre olive grove in SW Spain. She and her family spent summers camping on the land before building a house in 2009.

Noelle teaches landscape art courses at Finca Acehuche and urban sketching and painting courses in four historic towns in SW Spain. See finca-art.co.uk for more information.

Noelle Griffiths purchased this house in 2005

Why Noelle Griffiths chose Montanchez - Tamuja

Noelle and her family bought a three acre olive grove in 2005, because they fell in love with the landscape and the wonderful views of the Sierra de Montanchez.

After camping for many summers, they designed and built their own house. The house is designed for as much outdoor living as possible, and the covered terrace is almost the same size as the house itself, with a table and chairs for eating and a sofa and hammocks for relaxing. The nights skies are wonderfully clear, and the birdsong is rich and varied.

It is 1.3km off the road, along a camino (track) which means we do not get many passers by! usually just a man on a donkey, horses or cows being driven to another finca. We have planted fruit trees, and fenced half the finca so a friend's horse can graze for part of the year.

What makes this house unique

There are wonderful walks from the front door, along a network of paths and caminos. The large granite boulders amongst olive and fig groves are fantastic. It is a wonderful place for bird watchers, and in spring the wild flowers are plentiful.

And yet three historic towns are within approx 30 minute drive! The cultural triangle of Merida (a UNESCO World Heritage Site, built by the Romans), Trujillo (built by the Conquistadors in 16th century), and Caceres (a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unspoilt old town).

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We had a wonderful, peaceful and relaxing holiday. Finca Acehuche has an elegant simplicity and is well situated within an inspiring landscape. The geology feels ancient, with fascinating trackways and charming olive groves to explore. We were particularly impressed with the finca's 'off grid' systems which add to the 'getting away from it all' holiday experience and give a taste of self sufficiency. Nearby Montanchez is an authentic and atmospheric town and Caceras a culturally vibrant, historic city. We would wholeheartedly recommend Finca Acehuche to anyone looking for an interesting and relaxing holiday in this beautiful and unspoilt part of Spain." T Parker

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay - the terrace was a cool haven to return to after a day sightseeing and birding on the plains. The terrace provided some wonderful experiences - sunrise from the hammock, breakfast al fresco, bird photography in the afternoon, dinner in the evening, rounded off by the most amazing star show"

Peaceful and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

This was our third stay at Finca Acehuche, previous visits being in Mar/April 2016 and May/June 2015 and as always we had a lovely time. The general layout of the property is good with plenty of room, and a well equipped kitchen, which is not always the case with other places where we have stayed. One of the best features (along with the 'wild' unsprayed garden/olive grove) is the large veranda that spans the entire front of the house, complete with sofa, large table and chairs, as wells as hammocks if needed - it soon becomes the most used part of the house for dining and relaxing. The solar power and bore hole water systems have some limitations, but we have never had any significant problems, after familiarising ourselves with the simple instructions that are supplied.

The access lane to the property with its dry stone walls is a little narrow and bumpy in places but again we have never had any problems, unless you count the occasional herd of oncoming sheep, and the time it takes for stops to enjoy the views of hoopoes, woodchat shrikes, bee-eaters, Sardinian warblers, turtle doves etc!

With our interest in natural history we have found the large garden and adjoining olive grove, as well as the tracks (caminos) accessed directly from the property, perfect for experiencing the birds, flowers, insects, lizards etc that can be found in the area. The views from the veranda across the garden to the rocky Sierra de Montanchez and Montanchez hill top Moorish castle are delightful. An evening visit to the castle with its spectacular views is also recommended.

As well as the varied stunning countryside well within day-trip distances, including Monfrague National Park, the rocky boulder-landscape of Los Barruecos and the extensive steppe grasslands/plains that can be explored for birdwatching etc., we have enjoyed visiting some of the historical towns in the area such as Merida, Trujillo, Caceres and Guadalupe.

We are already looking forward to our next visit.

Idyllic Finca

  • 5 of 5

Comfortable and well equipped. We walked in the morning using Gisella Radant Wood's excellent book (copy in the Finca) and relaxed on the spacious veranda during the heat of the afternoon. Wildlife aplenty, with bee eaters flying over every day and a very large lizard we kept on disturbing on our drive back to the property.

We shopped at a small supermarket in nearby Alcuescar and stopped off at the large Carrefour in Caceres when we visited the Trujillo Plains to see Rollers, Bustards etc.

Recommended if you want to get away from it all and relax in Extremaduran warmth!

Good property, terrible access.

  • 4 of 5

No problems at all with this well equipped and well situated house, the ecosystems required no attention at all.

Entertainment must consist of walking,nature-watching or reading, the radio will be available to Spanish speakers.

Surrounding villages are small and pretty uninteresting and provisions must be obtained from either Caceres,

Merida or Trujillo, all small towns of charm and character and considerable historical interest. These towns are all

about a half hours drive from the property.

Having lived at the end of one for the last thirtyfive years I am no stranger to rough farm tracks but the

kilometre or so of track to this property is absolutely atrocious and on the limit of what can be managed by a

normal saloon car. I am personally no fan of 4x4's but this track would really warrant such a vehicle.

Owner's Response: I am so glad that you liked the house and location, but sorry that you found the track difficult for your car. I hope it did not spoil your holiday. As I write my husband and son are in Spain improving the track. We drive along this track regularly in all sorts of hire cars as well as our own car and do not feel it needs a 4x4 vehicle - but you do need to drive slowly. We also have many guests who return to stay at the finca who drive hire cars or their own cars.

A true escape from the hustle and bustle of life. Everything slows down here and you are left to enjoy tranquility in a stunning landscape.

The track to the Finca is a little challenging to drive first time around but worth it!

Montanchez (8km) provides shops and a supermarket for cheap, good quality local produce. Imberico ham is everywhere! The views from the old castle are also quite spectacular .

lovely location, ideal for a retreat

  • 4 of 5

This traditional finca is set in 3 acres of land, in a rural location, with stunning views across to Montanchez and the sierra. Simply and traditionally furnished, the property is comfortable, well equipped, and homely, with lovely artwork, and a good supply of books, and information for the art/nature lover/walker.

A feature of the property is its sustainability with regard to energy/water/waste, utilising solar power, which gives a real opportunity to live in tune with the environment.

We particularly enjoyed eating out on the sheltered verandah, even at this time of year, and the walks available directly from the property.

A little piece of heaven

  • 5 of 5

Finca Acehuche is an idyllic property in the most beautiful part of Spain set in quiet countryside but still within a reasonable distance of all amenities. You need to have transport to reach the finca but when you have driven the rural track to reach it is well worth the trip. The property is fantastic, well laid out with everything you could need to make your stay comfortable, it is well maintained and the terrace which runs the entire front of the property is a cool haven after a day out exploring the surrounding countryside, with views to die for. I would heartily recommend a stay here to anyone who enjoys nature, birding, walking, exploring old towns or just plain relaxing.
