About the Owner

My husband and I bought Petit Menage in 1993 with a view to escaping from the winter in North Yorkshire where we farm. The house and the island and its lovely people have given us an enormous amount of pleasure and still do. We have tried to maintain the charm and simplicity of an old Cypriot house along with modern comfort. Glad to say that our guests seem to think we have succeeded! North Cyprus is a lovely place to visit, largely due to the kindness of the Turkish Cypriots, the wonderful weather, and one drives on the left!

Quirky Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Spent a lovely week in this quirky cottage, set in a beautiful garden.

The kitchen, though dated, was clean and functional with everything you could possibly need. Bathrooms were clean with plenty of towels. Beds were comfortable, with good quality linen.

The pool was topped up within two hours of contacting the agent, and was cleaned twice during our weeks stay.

This was our 10th year in North Cyprus, and we would be happy to return to 'Petit Menage'.

Worst holiday let we have ever stayed in

  • 1 of 5

The property was unkempt, mouldy fridge freezer, everything needed cleaning before use, pool filthy, cupboards covered in grease. Very very disappointing stay. Could not even prepare meals everything was so dirty. Love northern Cyprus but will not be staying here again. We will finding someone who takes pride in their property not just trying to get money out of you. Not recommended

Owner's Response: While I am of course concerned at this review, I am very surprised that this guest did not contact our agent in North Cyprus at the beginning of her stay and tell him of her feelings. He is always available and anxious to deal with any problems. Had either of us been made aware of this guest's views we could have done something about the situation - either finding another property or arranging a cleaning team to come in. As it was she waited until her return to England two weeks later to let me know, by which time it was too late to improve things for her, and may have impinged on the holiday of the guests who followed. Fortunately the guests who followed were very satisfied with the cottage and told me that they had had a lovely holiday. Pauline Kynge Owner.

Wow chillout factor

  • 5 of 5

We had 3 wonderful weeks at Petit Menage Although the house is traditional and full of character it has everything you need But it was the garden and the grounds which stole our hearts We spent many pleasant hours by the pool or on the verandah under the grape vine relaxing sipping a glass of wine.

We wandered through the garden like children in awe at the many different types of fruit trees, the lizards, the stick insects and praying mantis Oh I could go on!

It is well positioned for the village and also the short walk to the dolmus run to take you down town Kyrenia

All in all a wonderful stay that we would hope to repeat again

Owner's Response: So glad that you enjoyed your time at Petit Menage. We planted the garden about 20 years ago and it is a constant source of delight to us - as it obviously was to you as well. Pauline

beautiful traditional cottage in a great location

  • 5 of 5

We loved Petit Menage. The house has an authentic rustic quality which suited our taste perfectly. It’s full of character with a well fitted out kitchen, and has everything you could need.

The Ottoman arches are lovely features and there are lots of places to sit and relax in and around the spacious garden and house but also on the 2 balconies. The balcony at the north end of the house was very useful for watching a Turkish Air force aerial display team do their stuff as part of a festival that was on while we were there.

The air conditioning in the bedrooms is very good and everything is well maintained. The agents for the house are very nice and helpful and always on hand if any problems arise.

The location of Petit Menage is perfect; it’s a short trip to the wonderful harbour area, Bellapais monastery and St Hilarian castle. But you can get to Gamagusta, Salamis and Kantara Castle in little over an hour. We also took a two day trip to the end of the Karpaz Peninsular and stayed in a beach cabin on the beautiful unspoilt turtle beach.

The pool and winter house are fantastic and we spent many lazy days just hanging out around the house and garden reading some of the many fascinating books while our kids enjoyed the pool.

We had a really brilliant holiday and Petit Menage was perfect for us. North Cyprus is a truly beautiful country made all the better by the amazingly warm, welcoming and helpful people.

We’ll be back.

Charming cottage in beautiful grounds

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay and we loved it even more this time. So relaxing and luckily we had wonderful weather for the whole two weeks. In a very convenient location where you are able to walk to many local restaurants. Obviously Bellapais and Kyrenia are nearby so all in all a perfect situation. We are already preparing to return next year.

A lovely holiday

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was charming and felt like a home from home, with plenty of space for 2 even though we spent most of our time outside as the outside spaces, garden, pool and terraces are exceptional. It was a relaxing holiday, plenty of peace and quiet, but excellent restaurants and all the basic shopping only a few minutes walk away, Ozankoy is a lovely village and very friendly. Plenty of information in the cottage on local attractions which was really useful. You could happily spend all your time in the garden and by the pool but Bellapais and Girne are well worth a visit for sightseeing and restaurants. We didn't have a car and found the occasional taxi cheap and very easy to arrange. Plenty to do in the local area if you don't want to hire a car. The manager was also incredibly helpful and friendly. A great holiday and we'll certainly be returning if we organise our bookings early enough!

Location

From the Owner

My husband, having been in Cyprus during the 60s, always remembered the beauty of the island. Much to my surprise we bought the cottage on the last day of a two week holiday - just exactly what you should not do, but we have never regretted it - quite the opposite - it has given us the greatest fun and still does. We love the Cypriot people who have been so kind and helpful. We like the food of course, to say nothing of the sea, the pool and the sun!

Activity and Interests

Nearest Ferry : Kyrenia at 5 Kilometres Nearest Golf : Korineum, Esentepe at 20 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Erol's Restaurant at 200 Metres Nearest Beach : Catalkoy at 5 Kilometres Car: recommended

Special interest holidays:

North Cyprus is very good for birdwatching, particularly in the spring and autumn migrations. There is a number of endemic bird species unique to Cyprus. Wildflowers in spring are also a particular interest - many species of orchid, some endemic.

Coast/Beach:

The sea is about a 5 minute drive away. Good beaches with umbrellas and beds about 10 minutes drive. The huge stretch of sand known as Turtle beach, where turtles nest in summer is about a 15 minute drive. There is a beach cafe and some changing facilities, but little shade.

Travel:

Ercan airport in the North is about 35/40 minutes drive away.Airlines include Pegasus and Turkish Airlines. Car hire for at least part of your stay is recommended, though not essential, and we can arrange this through our agent.

Larnaca airport in South Cyprus is approximately 1hr 15 minutes distant. There is a much greater choice of airlines here and our agents will meet you there.

Distances:

Kyrenia about 10/15 minutes drive. Nicosia about 30/35 minutes. Bellapais is a 10/20 minute walk away, depending on fitness.

Further Details:

The castle and old harbour in Kyrenia are memorable, and there are many restaurants in the old harbour and all over Kyrenia. Old Nicosia holds much interest. There are many ancient sites all over North Cyprus.

There are now many supermarkets in the area - three in pretty close proximity, and several small shops in the village within walking distance.

Facilities

From the Owner

One of the things which pleases us about the cottage is that it is so very different from our UK home. It immediately gives a feeling of being abroad, and yet has all the necessary comforts. We particularly take pleasure in the garden: growing things which are impossible to grow in Northern England, like unusual fruits and flamboyant flowering plants and shrubs. The rate of growth still surprises us and pruning is a gently pleasant pastime. We also enjoy birdwatching both locally and in the Karpas. In spring and early summer I love the wild flowers and the fresh green and yellow palate of the island.
