Apartment in Kalkan, Mediterranean Region, Turkey - Ground Floor Spacious Apartment With Private, Sheltered Garden With Sea View From Patio
The apartment is located in the premium part of Kalkan's old town 100m up from the town beach. It boasts a private garden with a view of the sea; ideal for sunbathing and relaxing in the hammock while sipping a gin and tonic. The short stroll to the town beach is down a typical Turkish lane coloured with bougainvilleas and hibiscus flowers scented in the evenings by the ever present jasmine. Shops and restaurants are even closer - a mere 100m walk along the narrow lanes. For those wanting to get away from it the entire apartment offers peace and quiet in idyllic surroundings yet is only several steps away from the glare and glitter of the gaudy shops. No need for expensive taxis to the beach or the town centre - you are in the town centre! Wake up in the morning, open the French windows and lie in bed admiring the grapevine and bougainvillea flowers bordering your private garden. Then enjoy breakfast on the patio with a freshly squeezed orange juice.
About the Owner
I have owned the property since it was built in 1998 and decorated and landscaped it in my own eclectic style with plants from Australia and paintings from Russia. It served me as a place of solitude in which to relax with my wife from the stress of work. However, since moving to Perth we now, unfortunately, rarely use Vine Grove. Other people now enjoy it and its tranquil garden.
Activity and Interests
Special interest holidays:
Kalkan is ideal for all types of water activities. The Bay has a Blue Flag Award for cleanliness and is ideal for a PADI diving course. Walkers can explore parts of the Lycian Way which passes directly through the town. For those who want an adrenalin pumping experience there is paragliding at both Kalkan, Kas and Fethiye.
On Patara Beach are early morning horse riding sessions and in the summer Yoga classes are available on the sea front at Villa Mahal. Kalkan will inspire any photographer or painter with numerous photo and painting opportunities so don't forget to bring your camera and brushes.
The apartment is 150m from the town beach and harbour. At the harbour you can catch water taxis to Palm Beach, Patara Prince beach, Villa Mahal and Kalkan Park beach clubs where concrete decking between the rocks makes it easy to enter the water. The nearest almost 'sandy' beach is Kaputas, a cove with turquoise blue water at the bottom of a gorge just 7 min ride by local bus. The 18km sandy beach at Patara (protected nature reserve and totally unspoilt) is a 20 minute car/local bus ride away.
The nearest airport is Dalaman - a 1¾ hour car journey. An alternative is Antalya 3.5 hours away. We advise use of local transfer companies on arrival/departure that are available on the internet. Local bus travel from airport to the apartment is not an option. It is also possible to take the ferry from Rhodes (Greece) to Fethiye or Kas then travel by local bus to Kalkan. A car is not necessary for staying in the apartment but the occasional day hire is recommended for day trips.
The nearest town is Kas, a 30km/30 min drive. Kas is worth visiting just for the stunning scenery on the coastal road. Fethiye, renown for its famous Olu Deniz beach, is 50 mins drive away and has a bustling market, busy harbour and fish restaurants. Many historical sites are within a 45 minute drive of Kalkan including Xanthos, Tlos, and Pinara. Other places of interest are Saklikent Gorge and traditional villages of Bezirgan and Islamlar just a short drive up into the cool Taurus Mountains.
Kalkan has several major Turkish banks all with cash machines accepting most credit cards plus a local post office. Internet cafes/Wi-Fi access and phone shops are available to stay in touch with home. There are English speaking doctors, chemists and a dentist if required. Don't worry if you forget anything - you can get it all here. Do visit the local market on Thursdays - not just for tourists and you don't get pestered to buy. If you feel like cooking at home there are three very good fruit and vegetable shops, two fishmongers two butchers and numerous supermarkets where one can buy local provisions. Some supermarkets deliver the groceries to your apartment. By cooking at home occasionally you can save a lot and enjoy a romantic dinner on the patio. The garden has spices growing in it to help you prepare - rosemary and a curry leaf tree. But if you wish to go out Kalkan is well known for its array of excellent restaurants high up on roof terraces in the old town or by the harbour. Don't miss the traditional eateries like Belgin's kitchen with authentic Turkish food, live Turkish music and the chance to smoke a water pipe or the small kebab houses, pide (pizza) and pancake restaurants. In the town centre you can spend hours exploring cobbled streets, browsing in shops, or just sitting at the Merkez Cafe watching the world go by. For sport enthusiasts live football matches are screened outside cafes where you can watch the game and enjoy an ice cold Efes lager. Must Do's When In Kalkan: A day trip to Kekova/Simena, Saklikent Gorge and a Boat (gulet) Trip On Kalkan Bay. There is just so much to see and do that one week isn't enough.
You are welcome to potter in the garden and trim the grapevine as it grows prolifically. The patio can be hosed down in the morning to keep it clean and cool. It would help if you watered the plants occasionally.

- Notes on accommodation: Generally, we find that we spend a lot of time in the cool shade of the grapevine covered patio. Access to and from the kitchen is easy via the French doors. Most of our meals are taken there. The setting is delightful - a view of the sea and the vacant hillside with ruins of old stone Turkish cottages and wild olive trees. In the evening the patio is lit by overhead lights and oil lanterns add charm. No-one is overlooking you - peace reigns. Yet the razzle dazzle of restaurants is mere 100m away. Being a ground floor apartment it is naturally cool. The shade provided by the vine covered patio provides further protection from the sun. The bedroom has an A/C above the bed and a central ceiling fan. At night the ceiling fan is sufficient for comfortable sleeping. The lounge room also has a central ceiling fan for ventilation and cooling. Please turn off the air conditioning when you go out! In winter the A/C has heating mode and there is an additional mobile electric heater. The private, sheltered garden adds to the charm, ideal for sunbathing. The hammock is provided. In addition to the portable electric tabletop grill there is a charcoal fired BBQ (charcoal not supplied). The utility room has beach equipment; small beach umbrella, flippers, goggles, beach/swim footwear and some beach toys suitable for small children. Outdoor furniture comprises a patio table suitable for 4 people, 4 plastic chairs with cushions and two sun beds with mattresses. A fold up clothes airer is located on the patio. The garden or rather 'open space' is paved with flagstones interspersed with pebbles and flower pots border one side. Rosemary and a curry leaf tree grow in the garden and the herbs can be used for cooking. The garden has sun until about 3 pm in mid summer. Utility Room: Adjacent to the kitchen is the utility room. This contains a wardrobe for storage of ironing board, iron, washing machine, hoover, beach towels, beach equipment, linen, electric hot water heater as well as washbasin and the toilet for additional guests. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The apartment will be freshly prepared for your arrival. Bath and beach towels are provided. Maid service during tenancy is an extra cost to tenants. Other: Patio is 'L' shaped, wide and covered with grapevines and bouganvilleas supported on a rustic style pergola. The bedroom and lounge doors open out onto the patio. Provides cool shade ideal for 'al fresco' dining or just relaxing on the garden furniture.
