About Martyn

Having been passionate about the mountains for almost 20 years mainly through road cycling and secondly through skiing, I decided to take the plunge and run a small chalet rental business... a cosy home-from-home that reflected the kind of place I would like to stay in myself. Somewhere with amazing links for (world-class) skiing yet within an authentic unspoilt mountain setting... I chose the small hamlet of Pourchery next to Vaujany for these reasons, oh and did I mention the absolutely stunning mountain and lake panorama with South/South West aspect!

I still spend time each season there enjoying the chalet/location as a holidaymaker myself - ski, hike, bike, enjoy!

Why Martyn chose Alpe d'Huez area

For one, its very spacious compared to typical 'chalets' in french mountain resorts. It has its own garage, is set in its own rock gardens and provides loads of parking space.

Whilst perfect for the more independent travelers it does also offer the benefit of a nearby (150 metres) free bus service to and from Vaujany village - hassle free quick access to Vaujany's huge high altitude ski lift!

The unique selling point for me is the fact you have world-clsss skiing / facilities and mountain sports access yet within an authentic mountain hamlet setting - unspoilt

The large decked balcony & terrace area (45m2) provides incredible Rhone Alps mountain and lake views - picnic table & parasol provide comfort for alfresco dining.

What makes this chalet unique

In short, it provides cosy, spacious comfort, your own home-from-home set in its own grounds providing privacy for your holiday. Set within a tranquil mountain hamlet - yet with world-class skiing and cycling on your doorstep - best of both worlds.

The panoramic views of the area are quite stunning and arguably the most rewarding in the entire Vaujany area - An average of +/-300 days sunshine each year means that you often wake up with a glorious view of the lake below (Verney) as well as the dominating 3000m+ peaks of the Grandes Rousses and Belledonnes to either side of the chalet. Vaujany's ski pistes are within view of the balcony so you are never far way from the action. The giant ski lift from the village whisks you up to high altitude within 10 minutes! - all without queues.

Notes on accommodation: Suitable for families/couples/individuals. Heating is modern convection type throughout supported by a superb state-of-the-art Focus wood fireplace and logs supplied. All windows double glazed with wooden shutters. Living space is a large open lounge/kitchen area with french window balcony access as well as garden terrace access. Outside: Lovely, large pine wood decked terrace - comfortable 30m2 space with solid wooden picnic table / parasol and spare chairs and sun even wooden loungers. An additional 15m2 wooden decked balcony area from the lounge provides even more space to relax and enjoy the stunning 360 degree mountain panorama - one of the most rewarding South / South West aspects in the entire Rhone Alpes region. Utility Room: Garage area for safe storage of skis and outdoor equipment as well as vehicle - 35m2+ capacity. Park Tools professional cycle stand and 2 x track pumps. Spare water buckets/sponge for cleaning bikes. Washing machine / sink in private garage area. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All clean towels and bedlinen provided for. This was our 4th year back at Chalet Verney, which in itself says a lot. It really is a fantastic place to stay, the accommodation is like home from home, really comfortable, clean and cosy. I'm hoping we have many more holidays in Vaujany and look forward to staying back in Chalet Verney next year. Thank you Martyn for making it a lovely place to spend our holidays.

Perfect getaway in this hidden gem.

Perfectly located only an hour and a bit away from the airport, this beautiful and spacious chalet is perfectly located to take advantage of some spectacular skiing. Not as packed as some of the big resorts it felt like we had the slopes to ourselves. Superb, super fast ski lift gets you to altitude very quickly and a great selection of runs are available from beginner to advanced. The chalet is beautiful, with truly stunning views, on multiple levels. Was exceptionally clean with a fabulous large but cost living area. Rooms are also very spacious. I will definitely be staying there again not only for the skiing but also for the fabulous cycling and also walking. This is a beautiful part of the world with amazing scenery. You won't be disappointed.

Best of both worlds!

Spectacular views from a comfortable well appointed home. I loved lounging on the couch and soaking in the mountain range, eating breakfast on the terrace, enjoying a cozy dinner by the fire, and walking out the back yard to a magical hike of moss, trees, and mountains.

Then five minutes up the road, donning skis (rented at a discount), and shuttling up a ski lift into a winter wonderland and world class skiing. How could I have been hiking amongst charming spring time flowers the same day?

Next I ended my day at the nearby vaujany pool for a dip in the jacuzzi to soothe my aching muscles.

Blissful vacation. I will definitely go back!

Dear Martin

Just wanted to say thank you for the use of your chalet last week. We had a wonderful lazy family week. No ski school for the first time meant stress free late am starts and skiing until the last lifts. Pyjama parties every evening with family games late suppers and DVD s.

Perfect blue skies for 4 days and fresh powder for last 2. All in all a wonderful week of fresh air, good food, great skiing, log fires and family

Special interest holidays:

Built on a site chosen specifically for its convenience for both ski and summer sports, chalet Verney is located between the valley floor and Vaujany village. For cycling the classic alpine 'cols' the chalet location is second to none!

Situated on the Col du Sabot mountain road itself which is a major (though lesser known) climb often referred to as 'Le Petit Mont Ventoux' given its average gradient of 8.9%.

Furthermore, the chalet is only 3km above the base of the epic Col de la Croix de Fer/Col du Glandon - 20km+ ‘hors categorie’ climbs regularly used in the Tour de France. Please see chalet website for further details: www.vaujanychalet.com


Not applicable although Marseille and French Riviera can be reached by car in 3+ hours stunning drive through the southern French alps via the autoroute or the famous 'Route Napoleon.'

Vaujany village is only 2km away or 3 mins drive/free bus ride (its own hamlet bus service stops only 150 metres from the chalet itself). Bourg d'Oisans town centre with Casino supermarket is 12km away or 15/20 mins drive. Grenoble city is 48km away or 45 mins by car. Allemont village (further outdoor sports facilities/restaurants/Boulangerie & Spar Shop) is 5km away.

Further Details:

A small selection of bars and restaurants can be found in Vaujany village (Galleria area) with some offering late night music/drinks. A nearby restaurant (best for summer) is the ‘Auberge Chez Passoud’ - a 2km picturesque stroll from the chalet located in the hamlet of L’Enversin d’Oz - a rustic eatery serving local dishes in a tranquil setting. Simply follow the sign to L’Enversin d’Oz from the first hairpin bend approx 250m up the mountain road from the chalet entrance. A 10 minute drive away in the old village of Oz en Oisans (not the ski station, but the village at a similar altitude to the chalet) lies a high quality eatery called ‘Auberge La Cure‘. Furthermore, there are half a dozen places to eat/drink in the village of Allemont (below the lake).

Chalet Verney booking terms and conditions -
Each booking requires a small deposit of 20%. Payment of deposit is by bank transfer within 5 days of making your verbal/email reservation. Please note that reservations will expire if deposits are not received during this time frame. Once the deposit is received your formal reservation is confirmed. The remaining (80%) balance is due 6 weeks prior to departure. If booking less than 6 weeks prior to arrival, full booking value is required.

Changeover Day:
Saturdays - Saturdays (arrival after 16:00hrs / depart before 10:00hrs) are normal though some special dates exist around public holidays for example Xmas / New Year

Owner's Cancellation Policy

  • 50% refund for cancellations more than 30 days before check-in date.
