I fell in love with this tranquil house by the biggest lake in the area and with direct views to the castle. It's such a beautiful place to re-charge your batteries and be inspired by the impressive unspoiled nature, culture (castles, music) great food and traditional architecture all around. Always worth a trip. We love helping our guests have a fabulous stay here.
Silke Rehman (German/British) currently working in Dubai purchased this apartment in 2008
Looking for the most beautiful places to live in worldwide I found this idyllic and undiscovered romantic corner at the border of Germany/Austria. The Romans, Celts and German Kings were attracted to this area. Stunning Neuschwanstein castle inspired Walt Disney to invent Cinderella castle and attracts more than 1M visitors every year. Astonishingly the region is still a secret to most Brits. This place offers everything: castles within a 3 mile radius. 5 lakes to swim, sail, canoe and windsurf during the hot summers. Fabulous skiing slopes during the sunny winters. Romantic Christmas markets and NY Eve's fireworks. Outdoor sports: horse riding, paragliding, hiking, cycling, golf, tennis. Excellent restaurants and cafes - great variety of life.
Sunny, spacious and luxurious with direct panorama view of famous castle Neuschwanstein & Alps, only 5 minutes from the lake in a calm, idyllic setting, yet within walking distance to the village centre & Fuessen town, 2 min from your first restaurant.
Equipped with every luxury such as leather massage chairs for a daily massage, luxury bathrooms, full kitchens incl. dish washer, a multimedia entertainment system and a washing machine in the apartment or accessible. The location of the house is very peaceful surrounded by meadows, trees, the lake and the mountains with the castles. Cycling tracks start right by the house. Even the Nordic skiing tracks are close and the first ski lifts are only 5 minutes away.

We stayed in Birkeneck 2 for 10 days in August. It is a large apartment with plenty of room for 4 people. There's nice furniture and big comfy beds and everything is very clean. The view is amazing with the 2 castles and mountains in the distance. The apartment is in a quiet area, away from the busy tourist area around the castles. There are plenty of places to eat within walking distance.
There are loads of things to see and do. We hired bikes and rode around the lake (bikes can be kept in the garage if you hire them for a few days), visited the castles, took the cable car to the top of Mount Tegelberg (amazing view from the top), rode the Tegelbergbahn toboggan run (great fun for us and the kids), visited Munich and Augsburg (approximately 2 hours by car) and visited Fussen and walked across the Austrian border.
My only suggestion to the owner would be to supply 2 fans that could be used in the bedrooms at night. With 2 bedrooms and 1 fan it was hard to cool down. It gets very hot in the summer!
Cornelia, who met us when we arrived, was very helpful and gave us some ideas of things to do and places to eat. She was also just a phone call away if we had any problems.
We loved our time staying in Birkeneck 2. It is a lovely apartment in a wonderful place and we'll definitely be back.
The whole experience was outstanding, the booking process, directions to Birkeneck, the accommodation, the complete package was just what a holiday should be like.
One of the aims of our holiday was to explore King Ludwig’s castle, the fact that we could sit on the balcony and see two of those castles against the backdrop of the mountains was a real bonus.
The accommodation was first class with the attention to detail very welcome. This is a place I would willingly stay again.
Cornelia a special thanks to you for looking after us, we took your advice and visited several of the restaurants and villages you told us about thank you.
The 3 aspects that captured my attention when booking at Birkeneck were: luxurious accommodation; fantastic views of the castle and warm hostesses.
The accommodation was very clean and what one would expect in terms of furniture etc, but unfortunately each bed had only a thin, single duvet with tired linen and a single flat pillow. 'Luxury' = thick down duvets, plenty of feather pillows and quality linen. It snowed twice during our stay and the heating was off so we slept cold. Why would one not have a double duvet on a double bed and why weren't there extra blankets in the cupboard? The towels are also in need of replacing as they have more than enough miles on them - thick fluffy towels = luxury. Small investment for the owner.
The 'castle view' was disappointing in that it's far away and very small - hardly across the road as the directions implied.
Our welcome was less than warm. Despite leaving home for the airport at 4am and then driving down from Munich, our 'hostess' would not allow me to make an instant internet transfer of the remaining funds in front of her. She insisted we drive through the town and find an ATM - bearing in mind the town was new to us and it would've been quicker and easier to simply do the internet transfer there and then but no. I'm still astonished at this attitude. Added to this reception was the blank look I got when I asked which restaurant they'd booked for us on our first night since I'd previously accepted their kind offer to do so. I was told I could go choose any restaurant I liked as a booking was unnecessary. Fine - we did so, but then don't offer your guests that option.
The notices up in the bathrooms to please wipe down the shower walls with the window squidgy provided annoyed me every single day - to be fair, I'm on holiday to get away from household chores and that job is covered by the cost of staying there. Being told to leave our shoes outside despite it being dry was irritating too. Naturally we would've done so if they were muddy but that wasn't the case. We felt like the unit wasn't warm and welcoming but rather sterile and stern.
The lake was non-existent as it had completely dried up so those thoughts of going on a boat ride dried up too.
I need to mention this is honestly the first time I've written a negative report and we go away on average 3 holidays a year.
In all, I think 'underwhelmed' fairly describes our experience and we'll definitely not be going back to Birckeneck.
Fabulous location, comfortable, warm accommodation, with a view to die for. Very convenient for shops, bars and restaurants, all within walking distance. A car is handy but not essential, if you like walking. There are lots of walks in the area, many of them flat and with lovely scenery. The walk to Neuschwanstein Castle and to Fussen and Brunnen, were particular favourites. A visit to the castle is a must! We had lovely food wherever we went, a particular favourite the restaurant Helmerhof. This us our second visit, didn't want to leave and can't wait to go back. Silke and Caroline were very helpful and informative and supplied lots of good tourist information.
