About the property

Holiday Home in Burnham Overy Staithe, North Norfolk, England - Large Enclosed Garden with Ample Car/Boat Parking a Few Yards from the Water

Recently awarded VisitEngland Gold Award in 4* category of excellence, Gillies was built in 2002, to very high standards, with traditional flint pebble finishing outside, delightful original wildlife pictures etc inside. It was substantially refurbished in summer 2014 with new kitchen and improved downstairs sleeping arrangements. The owner has been visiting Overy Staithe for over 60 years and has built an exceptionally comfy house which reflects his love of sailing, bird watching and family holidays, literally within yards of the sea in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With three very comfortable en-suite double bedrooms, two twin-bedded rooms downstairs with folding beds for children if needed. Free wifi facilities available. There is full central heating (underfloor downstairs) with LPG hob and cordon bleu cooking facilities, and a heated dog room (and room for more dogs in the utility room - but only good house trained dogs, no puppies and no dogs allowed upstairs or on furniture please. Also, because of unfortunate past experiences, we now have to make a small extra charge for dogs. Nevertheless, nice dogs and Gillies go brilliantly together!) Free linen, towels etc provided. A large shower room, washing machine and tumble dryer provide all that is needed by sailors and walkers, whatever the weather and there are many relevant seafood recipe books, bird and local history guides.

About Anthony Clay

After 20 years of letting a holiday home here I was lucky to obtain planning consent to build a new house in the same unrivalled position. Gillies is a family holiday home for my family, six grandsons and several dogs. All of us are very keen on sailing (the children also on crabbing!) and walking in this enchanting Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - I was a wildlife film maker and worked for the RSPB for 25 years. The house has been built with the discerning holiday maker in mind; warm in Winter, cool in Summer. The decor reflects my passion for wild birds and fresh seafood with bird guides and plenty of recipe books around the house; including binoculars for watching the egrets, avocets, godwits, harriers here - with tens of thousands of ducks and geese in Winter.

Anthony Clay purchased this house in 2001

Why Anthony Clay chose King's Lynn

The new build was finished in 2002. I love Burnham Overy Staithe and its superb little estuary, wildlife and walks. Having shared a holiday home here with my sisters for more than 30 years this was becoming difficult now that we all have families and many grandchildren. I wanted to build a new house, using local labour, specifically for my children and six grandsons, so that they could grow up to appreciate North Norfolk and its people. I was keen to make the house suitable and available to other like-minded, country loving people and I am delighted to have had many happy guests who have returned time after time (see many extremely favourable reviews). The house is used all year round and I believe my families and our guests make a substantial contribution to local businesses and local people.

What makes this house unique

The name 'Gillies' comes from the local word 'gilliegogs' for the shore crabs which children so much enjoy catching from the quay at Overy Staithe - indeed our weather vane of a small boy and his dog with a magnificent catch of gillies says it all. This is a wonderful natural playground for people of all ages and Gillies offers its guests an unrivalled position right in the middle of it all. This is not just another barn conversion but a house designed, built and maintained to make best and easiest use of all the facilities, from sailing and walking to birdwatching and even eating out - all of which can be done without the need of a car. But Gillies is also a home. It not just another buy-to-let property and it has many features that you will not find in commercially let properties.

Cosy LPG sitting room fire. Very suitable for children with stair gates, sandpit, toys available in children's bunk room. Free wifi and broadband. Fully double glazed and very light and airy with two French windows to dining/kitchen area. Less than 100 metres over the creek at low tide is a wonderful sandy estuary beach with shallow bathing, excellent for 'bucket and spading' and mucking about in small boats under adult supervision - but beware of tides (tide table in kitchen and in boathouse shop). Also crabbing (gillying) on quay less than 100 metres away in front of excellent boat house shop. Gillies really does have everything for children - as our 6 grandsons will testify! Outside: Large south-facing private garden, mainly laid to lawn, with several mature fruit trees, abundant fruit for you in season! Patio and partially glazed decking area, sandpit for children. Wonderful birdwatching (see guest comments below). 6 very comfortable counter-balanced chair loungers, 2 sunbeds, 2 deckchairs. Two sets of hard wood tables and chairs with chair pads and parasol etc available. Weber kettle barbecue and implements. Gate to coastal path and seawater swimming in creek. Hose wash down facility for muddy dogs and feet. Excellent gastro pub 3 minutes walk (does fish and chip takeaways). Short walk to ice cream van in season and crabbing (gillying) on quay in front of excellent rural maritime stores. But you will have to go to Wells-next-the-Sea, about 15 mins drive, for amusement arcades etc! Utility Room: Washing machine, tumble drier, clothes drying rails, oil fired boiler. Children's high chair, vacuum cleaners up and down stairs. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All sheets, towels and duvet covers changed weekly, no extra charge. Cleaning weekly on change over day, or as agreed. Caretaker/gardener available on phone who can also arrange baby sitting. Other: Purpose built underfloor downstairs heated dog room leading outside with tap and hose. Freezer. Large hallway and landing, upstairs airing cupboard, balcony overlooking panoramic view of estuary and sea. Stairs with child gates top and bottom.

Family Weekend Birthday Celebration

  • 5 of 5

Our family (10 of us) had a lovely weekend stay celebrating my wife's special birthday.

Gillies is a fabulous house with outstanding views over the tidal estuary and beyond. We found the accomodation very clean and everything we wanted was there. The bedrooms were very comfortable as were the sitting and dining rooms. We would not hesitate to visit again.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for a lovely review. Gillies is not commercially let. It is a family holiday home which we let simply to cover some of our costs. We love to share it with guests like you who appreciate it as much as we do and also support the local community when you come.

Owner's Response: Dear Carole As I think I may have mentioned tou I have been away in South Africa and not easily able to respond to reviews of Gillies while out there. So I have only just had time to read your very kind review and to be able to tell you how glad we are to know that you enjoyed Gillies It was very kind of you to write as you did and we are very grateful. All of us, owner, caretakers and cleaners try as hard as we can to help our guests to enjoy Gillies as much as we do. Hoping you may want to stay there again before long. With all good wishes and thanks. Anthony

Car: recommended

Special interest holidays:

CD's will shortly be available at Gillies for guests to insert in car CD players telling the amazing story of the times when Norfolk was know as "The Lawless Coast" and smuggling gangs battled with Excisemen and dragoons. Along the lines of Museum Audio Guides you follow the instructions on the video and in a folder. You will be guided to stopping places where a unique commentary by Gillie's owner (once a professional film maker) audio relates tales of these extraordinary times. The tour takes you to Wells-next-Sea to see the ale houses which were key to the story and where the militia were billited, then to Burnham Market and on across Burnham Deepdale Common and along the coast road to Thornham Village where an extraordinary battle took place on New Year's Eve 1782 outside what is now The Lifeboat Inn (where you can stop for lunch or just a pint) in the very place where the battle was fought visit the Dickensian creek harbour at Thornham. The tour takes from 80 minutes to complete.

Gillies could not be nearer the coast, being right on the estuary of the River Burn (called the Creek) at Burnham Overy Staithe. The sea is about a mile a way, either by a delightful walk along the seawall through the Holkham National Nature Reserve to the beach beyond the dunes, or at low tide by crossing the Creek and taking the charming 'Cockle Path' to cross the sands to Scolt Head during the extensive periods of low tide (fine in wellies but watch out for the tide).

King's Lynn rail station (London 1hr 40 mins) - 24 miles (50 mins) to south west. Norwich City (nearest airport) - 39 miles (1hr 25 mins) to south east. London Stansted International Airport - 94 miles (2hrs 30 mins). London Luton International Airport - 111 miles (3hrs). London - 128 miles to south by road. Harwich International Port, Suffolk - 113 miles (2hrs 45 mins) to south east. Dover Channel Tunnel, Kent - 189 miles (3hrs 50 mins) to south east.

Holkham National; Nature Reserve - on the doorstep. Titchwell RSPB bird reserve - 11 miles to west. Cley Nature Reserve - 15 miles to east. Seven local churches within 5 miles. Burnham Market, banks, shops, post office - 2 miles south. Wells-Next-the-Sea, small bustling fishing port - 5 miles east. Holkham Hall, stately home and park - 3 miles east. Houghton Hall, stately home, park and gardens - 20 miles south west. Famous shrine of our Lady of Walsingham - 9 miles south east.

Further Details:

A car is really necessary to make the most of what this outstandingly beautiful, varied area has to offer away from Burnham Overy Staithe itself (though there is a quite frequent coastal bus service which offers great opportunities for walking back along the National Coastal Path). There are many high class restaurants and an excellent variety of pubs (including our own 'The Hero' gastro pub a few metres away from Gillies - named after local hero Horatio Lord Nelson; born just over the hill at Burnham Thorpe) in easy reach, suiting every taste. Burnham Market (also just over the hill) is a wonderful place to visit with specialist shops, art galleries and a great fresh fish shop; as is Holt (about 25 miles away) with its famous public school - each with its own character and fascination. There are many lovely, unspoilt, dog-friendly sandy beaches (even a naturist beach at Holkham!) within easy reach and exceptional opportunities for water sports (especially sailing) at Overy Staithe, Wells, Brancaster and Blakeney. Guided bird watching at Titchwell and seal trips from Morston are just two of the superb wildlife watching experiences, along with nearby Penshurst Wildlife Park, a high rope adventure park, a maize maze at South Creake, Steam Museum at Thursford, Steam Railways at Wells and Holt to Sherringham, and many, many garden centres and other attractions too numerous to mention. Unlike most seaside resorts, which largely rely on seasonal Summer holidays for their success, the North Norfolk Coast is available all year round and many say that they like it best in Winter when we have up to 100,000 overwintering wild geese, with huge numbers of wigeon and many other wild duck. To see and hear huge skeins of these wonderful wild birds flying over Gillies from November to March, or to sit on the balcony, drink in hand, watching the sun set in the summer months over the marsh as it fills to overflowing with the tide are some of the finest experiences we know.
