Luxury Alpine Chalet near stunning Lake Annecy for family and friends

Overview

Property

Updated: 14-Nov-2016
Chalet in Le Chatelard, Savoie, Rhone Alps - Tranquil Location In Les Bauges Regional Park - An Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty

For the cheapest rates go to www.lechatox.com for more info of our home from home in the alps and email us direct. Les Bauges (the Wallows), an area of outstanding natural beauty, heritage and tradition makes a great base to explore a wide range of outdoor activities or to simply relax and chill in the fresh mountain air with stunning views from your private terrace balcony. Situated on a hillside on the outskirts of Le Chatelard in the heart of the Massif des Bauges regional park, Le Chatox enjoys superb views through the valley towards the mountains and is a just 30 minutes from the beautiful towns of Annecy,Chambery and Aix-Les Bains.

The lounge is open plan with an L shaped sofa for 6 and a two seater sofa. We also have a rocking chair for bird watching and star gazing ! There's a book selection, games cupboard and guitar if you play. TV and DVD with a CD selection for evenings in or chess and cards if you prefer. The kitchen is fully equipped with microwave, Gaggia coffee machine, and Wendy's spice cabinet! There's a fondu, BBQ and raclette set for meat and cheese fondue lovers. The Morso Squirrel wood stove puts out big heat in winter to couple with underfloor heating and there is a bathroom/shower on each floor. Le Chatox was built with light and space in mind so we have a sliding door to a patio at the side of the chalet to the garden with 4 sun loungers. A great area to BBQ.

The terrace balcony is huge and you can entertain there seating 8 at the table for major dinners and BBQ's. We tend to spend most time here as we chose the plot deliberately for the stunning view of Dent de Rossanz or 'booby mountain' to our guests. You'll see why on our website www.lechatox.com which has more info and is worth a look.

In the 'cave' or ground floor is garage parking and room for our full size competition table tennis. On a fine day just wheel it out in the sun! We also have 4 tennis racquets for the courts in the village.

Our village Le Chatelard remains unspoilt and retains a certain rustic charm with its old store fronts and little alleys leading up towards the church. It is a quiet, friendly village with a large supermarket, bakery, bar and hotel/restaurant, tourist information, bank, post office and a local food market every Friday morning.

Les Bauges is a walkers paradise. Great family skiing is here at unbeatable prices away from crowds. There are 5 resorts all within 30 mins from your home. See the info on the website. Cycling with awesome routes used in the Tour de France. I can advise on routes for all abilities. Beautiful Annecy is nearby for swimming and exploring the old town called 'little venice'. It was recently voted one of the most beautiful places to visit in France. Our local lake with restaurant and flumes, tennis and fun for little ones is just 10 minutes away! The French will wonder how you discovered their secret resort! All just 1 hour from Geneva airport. 7.30hrs from Calais. Just get in touch with Paul or Wendy for a chat so we can tailor your holiday personally.

About the Owner

Paul works for a national charity, Wendy is a children's nurse. We have two boys, 24 (scientist) and 22 in sports marketing after a sports sciencedegree at Brunel. We have been going to France for our holidays since 1986 traveling the country in our VW camper- now deceased. We've been to most departments in France but the Savoie, Annecy and in particular the Bauges National Park (the wallows) had a profound impact on us that one day we vowed to own a property there. Le Chatox is the result, completed in July 09 when the Tour de France came by Annecy. What a day that was! This is our home from home and we want to share it with like minded people. One day we hope to live there, but for now Le Chatox is there for you.

Fantastic Base for Family Skiing Holiday

  • 5 of 5

This is our second stay at Le Chatox - see our review of 21 April 2015. Again we had a fantastic time and highly recommend the chalet and local ski resorts. It was a bit busier this time being half term (previously we came at Easter) but not too much so. We hope to come back again next year.

Excellent House in the Rhone-Alpes

  • 5 of 5

This is our second stay at Le Chatox. This is a very well equipped and comfortable house that is also smart and nicely designed. Our main activities on holiday are walking and for me road cycling. This is a great location for both. There are some great walks both demanding, mildly challenging and more leisurely in a truly beautiful part of France and the Alpes. The views from the summit walks are breath taking. Rides can be started from the house which are described in the house information and marked up on maps by the owner who is a keen cyclist. My rides I kept to around 1.5 to 2.5 hours and the scenery is spectacular. The Tour went through the village in 2013 and you can do parts of, or all of the stage if you are up for it! The house sits on the edge of the town of Le Chatelard which has a convenient supermarket, filling station and few restaurant options nearby. Chez Cyril in Le Noyer is particularly good. I would thoroughly recommend this accommodation which is appointed to high standards.

Le Chatox absolutely ideal. Everything we needed to make our holiday complete. Had a great time. Would have liked to fit in more walking - perhaps next time. Good company and a lovely area to explore. Thanks for letting us go with Pam & Alan.

Thanks again.

Le Chatox in June

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Le chatox for 8 nights (22nd-29th June 2015) and had a wonderful time. When we stayed here about 5 years ago, we did a fly/drive via Geneva airport, but this time we went by car which was fairly straight forward (if you stick to the toll roads). Paul gave us very good directions which was very helpful for the last part of the journey. Le Chatox is a lovely holiday chalet set on a hill overlooking a valley with 2 mountain peaks in the background which make for a stunning view from the chalet balcony. Although it may be seem remote and can only be reached by car, you are rewarded by being in a fantastic rural location with breathtaking scenery. It is part of the village of Le Chatelard - one of 12 villages in Les Bauges. We took the opportunity to do lots of walking and went swimming in a local lake at Lescheraines, Visited Annecy (make sure you go there on a market day!), hired a boat on the lake as well as swimming in the lake, visited Aix Les Bains and another lake: Lac Bauget. There is no shortage of things to do and places to see! Cycling is very popular around this area, so if you're a keen cyclist and like some challenging climbs, this is the place to come!

Le Chatox is a very comfortable chalet with plenty of room and is very well equipped. The owners went out of their way to ensure our stay here was memorable. We will definitely go there again.

Fabulous Summer Holiday at Le Chatox

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a wonderful two family fortnight at Le Chatox - eight of us in total. The accommodation was superb, exactly as described, spacious, spotless, welcoming and very easy to find from the directions provided. After absorbing the wonderful mountain-view setting and enjoying the clean alpine air we all settled in very quickly in this fabulous home from home with everything we needed for a relaxing base for our holiday. We had very good weather on the whole with the 35 degree high finally breaking with a dramatic thunderstorm which was phenomenal to watch from the comfort of the chalet. On that one day of rain Le Chatox provided table tennis, darts, a cupboardful of games and a selection of DVDs to keep everyone entertained. Temperatures settled around 25 - 28 degrees and we set about exploring and experiencing the area. Between us we cycled (including following a stage of Le Tour de France), walked (Cascade du Pissieu and Chapelle St Bernard) swam and water skied at Lescheraines Lakes, swam and sailed at Lake Annecy on numerous occasions, flew through the trees at Aillon Station Ski Resort (ski-lift up and zip wires and tree-top walkways down - great fun for children and adults alike!), enjoyed the spectacular views from Semnoz, learned about the art of the Chocolatier, shopped in Old Annecy Town and of course at the local Carrefour, especially when we chose to simply relax at Le Chatox and enjoy the weather, the peace and the beautiful surroundings. We enjoyed a number of barbecues at Le Chatox and also ate out in Annecy, at Lescheraines and Lake Annecy benefitting from recommendations from Paul and Wendy - our favourite was Chez Ma Cousine by the water in Doussard. We will definitely return to Le Chatox and we would highly recommend Le Chatox for a fantastic summer holiday.

Fantastic Base for Family Skiing Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We spent nine nights here as a group of two families with young children on their first skiing holiday during the first week of Easter. We drove which we found surprisingly easy. Le Chatox was absolutely perfect for our group and had plenty of space for the children to play (including table tennis and darts) and for us to relax in the evenings and everything you could possibly need in a holiday home. Paul had sent us all of the information we needed beforehand but was also available to talk through the arrangements for our ski lessons (with Muriel from ESF who was great) and equipment hire (from Christian and Marie from Aillon Sport, also great). We only skied at Margeriaz which is 20 minutes away by car (Paul had already told us that the lower Les Aillons would be closed) which was brilliant for the four beginners and absolutely fine for the fairly rusty two intermediates. The children (10, 9 and 6) took to skiing straight away and loved it. There are many other ski areas accessible by car, including Val Thorens, but we didn't venture far. Despite rain for one day (it was the last week of the season) the skiing conditions were great and the pistes were empty even at the weekend. We didn't have to queue once for the ski lifts and as it was the last week the ski passes were only 12 Euro's each per day. Everyone at Margeriaz (and elsewhere) were very friendly and we particularly enjoyed lunches at La Bergerie. There were some language barriers (we speak very little French) but we got by without too much bother. As we had small children who were exhausted we ate in every evening and the Carrefour supermarket in Le Chatelard had everything we needed. We took snow chains but didn't come close to needing them. Don't use your in-car DVD player on the train (we did and had to be jump started) and don't take the wrong turning and end up in Geneva in rush hour like us! All in all we had a fantastic time and have already booked to go back in the February half term next year.

Owner's Response: Dear Matt and family. You have just proved that Margeriaz is probably the best value end of season resort in the alps at just £9 a day for great blues, and challenging reds. Id never heard of that kind of deal in the past as its usually £17 but all still way cheaper thn the so called 'snow sure resorts they charge familes a fortune for even when they can only ski a limited amount of piste The Bergerie or 'Shack' as we call it is great for lunch on the slopes. We are so pleased you found our home from home at Le Chatox nice and comfortable. Consider yourself 'Chatoxed!! At half term you will also be able to sample some of our other local resorts like La Feclaz, La Revard, Les Aillons and Semnoz. We have 5 in all, all just a short drive from our house. We look forward to your return next year!

Location

From the Owner

Surrounded by cities of Annecy, Aix-les-Bains, Chambery and Albertville, the mountain range of the Bauges in Savoie looks like a fortress as you drive into it. There are six roads that lead into the heart of this 'island in the sky' and its 'capital village' is Le Chatelard. Once in this designed area of outstanding natural beauty, the countryside slants slowly toward the villages, vast fields and forests. The inhabitants called "Baujus" are warm mountain people who are willing to share the love for their region. By horse, donkey, foot, bike, paraglider, ski or snowshoe the Massive of the Bauges has something for everyone. Its an all year round paradise with something for lovers of all four seasons or just one. We bought into Les Bauges because its a step back in time and and we love it and want t share the experience. Just see our reviews for confidence.

Skiing (alpine or cross country)Walking, cycling (road or MTB), para-sending, swimming, cannoning, climbing, butterfly hunting, flora and forna trails, donkey rides through the old villages, rustic cooking restaurants - its all here! I am a keen cyclist and skier. Les Bauges is serious cycling county. In 2013 we were proud cheer Chris Froome in yellow as they came through the village! I can advise on routes for all abilities and the best places to stop and eat! You need to be good on the hills around here so a compact chain set is advised unless you wear an 'S' under your shirt..! In July a group of us cycled to Annecy to watch the Tour de France. The ride back up the 12km Col de Leschaux from 400 - 900meters in the pouring rain but still 25 degrees was awesome. We arrived back at Le Chatox in the sunshine and dry. One guest described it as the best cycling day of his life.

Coast/Beach:

Ten minutes to Lescheraine and their lovely swimming lake with mountain views. It has flumes, jetty, restaurant/cafe and a large grass beach. A great venue for a summers days with the family.

Its just 30mins to Annecy and Aix-les-bains for great beaches around the lakes both sandy and grass. A good day out is down by the lake before it gets to hot to laze in the sun watching the paragliders come down. Then a short cycle on the private cycle route around the lake to Annecy for lunch or dinner

Travel:

Flydrive Geneva,Chambery,Grenoble. Geneva is best. If booking in advance you should get a return from £50. Go to Skyscanner for prices and flight times from all airports.Access to Le Chatox is just 60 minutes away from picking up your car in Geneva now the new motorway route to Annecy is open. Further Details:

A brand new supermarket has just opened in le Chatelard - Carrefour which is great for all provisions and just 1km from Le Chatox. There is so much to do in Les bauges that we recommend you go straight to website for all info from skiing, hiking, fishing, cycling, treking, cooking, painting, crafts, donkey trails, the 14 villages of Les bauges, the festivals and activities on offer. Check with the Tourist information in Le Chatelard if in doubt. They even have the menues for all the local restuarants. For Sunday lunch or a treat try the Auberge de le Clarines, Le Chatelard or hotel in Jarsy - just 3 kms away. For real alpine food go to Mont Pelat restuarant at les Aillons ski resot - 12 kms. For a real blues vib and rustic charm Vincent and Cathy at the Auberge de la Margeriaz will look after you at the top of the Col de Leschaux. Facilities

From the Owner

Being quite literally in the centre of a national park, our chalet, Le Chatox, is brilliantly located. Its key convenience is because of all 14 villages in Les Bauges there is only one major supermarket (Carrefour)and its in our village! 15-30 mins away are FIVE amazing ski resorts, unbelievable cycling, walks, swimming and Aix le-Bain, Annecy and Chambery only 30 min away for day trips. We built here in 2009 and made sure we had the biggest terrace balcony for eating out with friends and family with 8 seated comfortably and a view to die for facing the mountains. Star gazing, bird watching, butterfly chasing appear to be popular with guests! The locals are warm, friendly and eager for you to enjoy yourselves. Les Bauges is hidden in a distant time...we hope it stays that way. go to www.lesbauges.com to learn more about this amazing location.

There is no wi-fi but passing time soaking in the amazing view with some melancholy music and a glass of your fav tipple as the fire crackles, is surely more preferable? Come and get Chatoxed!
