About Candy Goad

We're Candy and Andrew Goad - and we're lucky enough to live in the Lake District, waking up every day to the sight of mountains and rushing rivers, and the sounds of skylarks and sheep. I was a creative director in a previous existence and love designing the ultimate holiday cottage - warm, welcoming, stylish - and a real home from home.

Andrew loves doing up old houses and bringing them back to life. So he maintains the properties (and is on call if you need any help!) while I organise the bookings and make sure each of our three cottages is as gorgeous as it can be.

Why Candy Goad chose Eskdale

High Ground Cottage was love at first sight. I'd never seen anywhere like this - set amidst wild moorland and the glorious fells, with Britain's highest mountain, Scafell rising before your eyes.

It was owned by an artist before me, and is the perfect retreat for anyone with an artist's soul!

There's something magical about this place - and I've had to promise my two sons that they can still come and stay here sometimes during the year, even though we don't live here any more...

What makes this cottage unique

Total peace, the essence of the Lake District all around you, skylarks, wild cloud formations and rainbows, snow on the tops, herdwick sheep grazing in front of your garden - but also some wonderful things to see and do nearby.

It's perfect for grown-ups who need to recharge their batteries and regain their zest for life - and brilliant for kids who will have a great time on the little steam train nearby, the great beaches you can drive to, the owl sanctuary and much more.

Notes on accommodation: The property has underfloor central heating downstairs and radiators upstairs, together with a log-burning stove in the kitchen and open fire in the second sitting room. Kindling and logs are available to buy on request. There is ample parking outside the property. High Ground Cottage is a pet-friendly cottage with stunning mountain views and is actually our home over the winter. That's why it isn't possible to book it in winter months - except for the February half-term when we go away ourselves. That means that it's a warm, characterful home - not just a soulless holiday cottage - full of great books, comfy furniture, a big TV with full Sky package, and a lovely atmosphere. You will relax completely!. The situation is away-from-it-all and it's perfect for romantic breaks and destressing. Terrific mountain-biking, fishing and other sports in the area mean you be active if you want to, in a really inspiring way. Great for kids too, away from traffic & lots to do in the area. Outside: There is an enclosed garden with garden furniture. Utility Room: Washing machine, boiler, clothes dryer, ironing board and iron Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bedlinen and towels are provided and the property is given a top-to- bottom clean after each stay.

stunning holiday property

We have been to this house twice before and it was wonderful to revisit. There are many aspects that make this a perfect place to stay and "aspect" is the right word to use as the views from the garden, kitchen and sitting room are spectacular and ever changing. Watching sunrise and sun set over the crags was a daily "eyeball pleaser"!

There were nine of us and two dogs in our two-family party, and there was plenty of space for all. Our days were spent waking, climbing and swimming in lakes. Evenings eating great food in many a good pub or family meals round the enormous kitchen table.

Candy, the owner, was on hand before and after to answer/deal with my questions which always makes the experience welcoming.

We will be back!

Peaceful and Away from it All

Lovely comfortable house with fantastic views. A real get away from it all holiday, with fantastic walks for the dog right on the doorstep. Slight problem with the water turning brown, but this was fixed really quickly - it would have been useful to have been provided with some bottled water to drink though! Had a lovely meal at the Bootle Inn. Ideal for a relaxing break

As you say it's excellent for walking pooches - I'm hoping you and your woofer discovered the walk from the cottage to the mountain tarn at Devoke Water. Sorry you had a short-lived water problem - of course the cottage is in the mountains and so has a private water system - to reassure future guests the problem is sorted and it's clear as a bell as a bell again. Glad to hear about the Bootle Inn - we'll add it to our list. There are a lot of really excellent pubs with great food in the area.

Absolute Perfection!

We were two couples looking for a peaceful, beautiful place to walk and relax. We could not have found a more perfect spot. The views are breathtaking from every window. ...even the wonderful photos could not capture the beauty of this bucolic location. From the door step you walk out and just sit and watch lambs frolicking or walk in any direction to tarns, to villages, to pubs...

The cottage is lovely, very clean, with a well equipped large farmhouse kitchen, comfortable pretty furniture, with lots of space to allow different activities; one can watch movies in the evening and another read by a fire in a separate sitting room.

Absolutely wonderful

The cottage is beautiful. We came for my dad's 65th birthday treat and we couldn't have picked a better place to stay. We ranged in age from 65 - 5 and everyone had a great time. The views are breathtaking - and you get these from pretty much all the windows! Dad actually spent a whole afternoon in an armchair admiring the scenery. Your only neighbours are sheep and the odd rabbit so it's perfect for some peace and quiet. There's a binder filled with information on the area and recommendations of places to eat which was so helpful for settling in. It's lovely and clean and fantastically equipped! The cooker was a real treat to use. Candy was a great host she couldn't have been more accommodating and answered all our questions so quickly. We couldn't have asked for more.

Spacious cottage, with magnificent views.

High Ground is very good sized cottage with outstanding views, which you get from almost every window. This is a very quiet location but not so out the way you can't get to some of the more central areas of the Lake District.

The open fire is a bonus and the owners very kindly organised for a delivery of logs. The house is homely with a good sized enclosed garden.

The owners were very helpful and which made booking very simple. That you can bring a dog is a bonus.

a great spot with lovely views

A roomy property for a mixed age group from 6 months to over 60 + dog.

The cottage had all the facilities we required as per the description.

Close to Eskdale for walks, railway, Muncaster Castle, Wastwater and Hardknott roman fort.

Best pub garden for kids - The Bower House Inn.

Best food Hardknott cafe.

Location

Coast/Beach:

You are in a very special place here - it's just a half hour's drive to some of England's most beautiful beaches at Silecroft and St Bees (which has a great beach cafe). Vast and sandy, these unspoilt beaches have the mountains as a backdrop.

Travel:

The nearest airport is Manchester or Liverpool, both about 2 hours by car. The nearest train station is Ulverston - around 30 minutes by car. Oxenholme-the-Lake-District station is an hour away by car and now has an excellent, fast service.

Distances:

High Ground Cottage is a five minute drive from the post office and stores in Ulpha and not much more to the general store in Eskdale Green. Broughton-in-Furness is a very attractive and ancient little market town just 7 miles away, with excellent food shops selling the best of local produce, plus a bank, several inns, a post office and cafe/bread and cake shop.

Further Details:

There are some excellent inns serving good food within an easy drive of High Ground - the nearest is three miles away at the foot of the Hardknott Pass. Sit outside and drink in the drama!

For a big shop you can go to Barrow - about 40 minutes away by car - which has a 24 hour Tesco Extra store and an Asda. Or why not order a home food delivery from Tesco?

You are spoilt for things to do, like a trip to the coast on the Eskdale to Ravenglass miniature steam railway, Muncaster Castle with its Owl Sanctuary and gardens, Lake cruises on Ullswater and Coniston, the wildly beautiful Wastwater lake nearby, the Animal Park at Dalton, Motor Museum at Holker Hall - while all the Lake District favourites from Beatrix Potter's Hilltop Farm to Wordsworth's Dove Cottage are all just 45 minutes to an hour away by car. There is also riding, bike hire and canoeing.

Fees No additional mandatory fees

Just to be clear, we ask for a ONE THIRD deposit to confirm the booking, with the balance payable not later than six weeks before your break. A refundable damages deposit of £100 is also required. All payments to be by bank transfer to a designated account, or by Paypal. With Paypal payments there is a 3.4% surcharge. Pets are welcome with a small charge of £15 per pet.
