About the property

Villa Angelos near Almyrida ( Almirida ), Chania area, Crete - Quiet But Not Remote, Walk to Shops, Sandy Blue Flag Beach

Fully air conditioned throughout at no extra charge. Private BBQ. Own private drive / imposing gates. British plumbing! (no small-bore WC pipes!).Note: Additional bedrooms are available on request. This villa is bigger than it appears - we charge by occupancy, so if your group requires another bedroom or two, these can be unlocked! Please enquire!

IMPORTANT NOTE TO PARENTS WITH SMALL CHILDREN! This villa has a downstairs kitchen which looks out directly onto the gated pool. This means you can see your children playing in the pool while you are preparing lunch! Many other villas in the area have not been designed with holidaymakers like you in mind because they have an upstairs (Greek Style) kitchen which means you may have to balance a meal and a drink on a tray while walking down a flight of stairs with a toddler following behind you or under your feet! We designed this feature BEFORE the houses were built - you are not an afterthought!

Close to the villa are two villages. Almyrida, by the beach, is only a 3 minute drive away or you can walk it in half an hour. Gavalochori, further inland, is only a 1 minute drive away and you can walk there in less than 15 minutes.(We walk it in 12 minutes).

Our guests often comment that this villa is in the perfect location: within walking distance from the two villages, close enough to enjoy their facilities but not too close to be disturbed by barking dogs, crowing cockerels and noisy human nightlife that happens in any and every Cretan village or town.

The villa is located in a peaceful private olive grove of 4.5 acres (17,000 square metres). It is one of only 5 villas in the olive grove, all of which are owned by us. The olive grove is secure, being fenced and hedged by colourful oleander, and surrounded by olive trees. It is the perfect base to explore the picturesque Apokoronas area on foot or by car, with its tiny white hamlets nestled on green mountainsides. Apokoronas is a designated area of natural beauty, protected in a similar way to a UK National Park. At all times there are breath-taking views of the White Mountains which are snowcapped until late May. Literally on your doorstep there are numerous foot-trails through this most spectacular area of Crete, a genuine walker’s paradise.

The pool has stone steps down into the pool. This means small children and people with mobility issues can get into the pool unaided. It is a very sociable place to sit and chat at the end of a sunny day with a glass of wine!

POOL DEPTH is a constant 1.25 metres, not including walk down steps.

Width is 4.5 metres, length is 8.5 metres

About John Marcus

Hello!

My name is John and I look after the bookings for our 4 houses which we have built on the lovely Saint Basil Olive Grove, just a short distance from Almyrida, Crete. My wife and I jointly own the properties together with my best friend and his wife, and we have been offering guests the chance to holiday in this spectacular part of the world since 2005 - sharing our vision of this lovely island. You'll notice, from the text alongside,. that I speak fluent Mandarin! Before my current full time job managing our bookings, I lived and worked in Hong Kong for 20 years.

John Marcus purchased this villa in 2005

Why John Marcus chose Apokoronos

The location is perfect. You can walk to the beach in half an hour and be in my favourite taverna in Gavalochory village in well under 15 minutes. After holidaying together in Spain with our friends and our own young children, we knew that building swimming pools with gates was very important. And not being overlooked! Our villas are betwee 60 - 200 metres apart from one another so you never feel hemmed in by other holidaymakers next door. This particular house actually has extra bedrooms available so you can accommodate up to 8 people in comfort Or 9 with an optional camp bed. As we charge by occupancy, this gives you real flexibility as you can add extra guests at any time up to your day of departure.

What makes this villa unique

The views of the mountains are truly spectacular.

The peace and quiet of the olive grove.

It's nice to be near village life, but not too close!

Guestbook comments from the manager

Clean, attractive villa with most things necessary for a relaxing stay. The layout was perfect, with pool and veranda which can be seen from kitchen & living area. The villa was in an ideal location, near the villages of Almyrida & Gavalochori. Would certainly recommend the villa to others.

Jo, July 13

Both Karen and I had a wonderful time at time in Crete and were very sorry to have to leave. You have a fantastic set up and I have been very

busy promoting it to friends, family, customers and anyone else who will listen to me!

John, Sept 2012

We thought the villa was in an ideal situation - peaceful but not isolated and within walking distance of the taverna and an easy drive for a quick dip in the sea . It all looked very well cared for and had everything we needed. We found all the pre-holiday information excellent and all in all a pretty professional and friendly experience .We would recommend you and certainly hope to repeat it ourselves.

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: Important: We charge by occupancy not per villa. House Layout: Wide patio doors connect the spacious outside areas to the light and airy open-plan kitchen. ‘Alfresco’ meals are easy because there are no stairs to negotiate from the kitchen. Watch out! Some other villas have the kitchen inconveniently located on the first floor so it is not so easy to take meals outside to the terraces or enjoy by the pool). The living room has access to a downstairs bathroom, and is conveniently next to a double bedroom. If you would like to accommodate more than 4 guests in 2 bedrooms we can unlock a further 2 bedrooms on request. Choose this villa if you are looking for value! This is big quality villa for the price of an apartment. Outside: Extensive olive grove to explore, outdoor sun loungers and table. Private pool size 9x4m which is fitted with safety gates to control access to pool for young children. Pool depth 1.3 metres - no deep end! Plenty of outdoor space for children to play. There are various shaded patio areas at all times. Utility Room: Washing machine. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Main clean once a week with midweek linen change during your stay. Towels and sheets provided

Welcoming, well equipped villa in a great location

  • 5 of 5

We have returned four times to this little group of villas, and Angelos is a favorite. You can trust the owners' descriptions: it is exactly as described, if not better. Clean, well-maintained with improvements every year, these villas are ideal for a relaxing break. You're not overlooked, and in a lovely location. The nearest village has two great tavernas, a bakery and a little supermarket. Almyrida has a wealth of sea front eateries and a safe and inviting beach. AutoClub do reasonable car hire rates and Crete is an island you'll never tire of.

Excellent Villa

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from the fantastic Villa Angelos nr Almyrida. All we can say is it is Home from home providing all amenities. There is a great pool with spacious surrounding area. Rooms lovely and clean, beds comfy & Aircon in each roof with ceiling fans also. We found just having ceiling fans on through the night enough so didn't need Aircon on . It is a 20-25 minutes stroll to Almyrida. Taxi available back to the villa costing 6-8 euros. Lots lovely restaurants on sea front. Few cafes where can get lunch. The village of Gavalochori is a 10-15 minutes walk where you will find handful tavernas serving great food with a bakery and small supermarket. Easy walk too.

Almyrida is lovely with plenty of places to eat & drink and few shops. There is a bus to Chania which takes around 20 mins costing 6 euros return.

Can't fault villa and would recommend to anyone.

It was lovely villa, lots of out door space and close to local amenities.

  • 4 of 5

Excellent position, lovely area and close enough to main roads to go off exploring. The villa was well equipped, with plenty of crockery and cutlery, even down to a knife sharpener, woohoo. It was clean and well presented and even the bed was comfortable.

For us, the main concern was the limited 2hour on the air conditioning units, during the day no problem, but at night, one of us had to get up several times during the night to re start the timer, so we never got a full nights sleep. We did relay this back, as maybe the unit wasn't working to its fullest potential, some adjustments were made, but it didn't make any difference.

Owner's Response: Hello Frances and thank you for your comments. We are very pleased you enjoyed your stay and I will take a moment to address you comments on the aircon. First of all, as you know, each bedroom besides an airconditioning unit also has a powerful ceiling fan. These fans are not on timers, and provide a variable speed cooling downdraft which 95% of our customers are happy with even in the hottest months. We introduced the aircon timers as part of our responsible eco-friendly philosophy. You can use the aircon units at night as long as you wish, there is no restriction on how many times you can operate them. Most people set the aircon before they go to sleep and use the fans on full power overnight which then recirculates the cool air. This has the advantage of avoiding the big problem with airconditioning i.e. waking up suffering from an uncomfortably dry nose and throat - this is a common complaint if the aircon is used without a break overnight (you will find some holiday establishments in Greece will shut off the aircon entirely in the early hours and you have no control whatsoever - unlike ours). Also, you don't need to keep the doors closed in your bedroom - the large upstairs window at the top of the stairs has a slide opening with mosquito net and if you open this fully while locking back your bedroom door (using the hook & eye latch provided) there will be a cooling through draft from the ceiling fan to the window, even if the aircon is turned off. Our mix of aircon and ceiling fans works for 95 % of our customers, the majority of whom return year after year."

Great location and great views

  • 5 of 5

This property provides great value for money and well situated between the village of Gavalachori and the sea, both of which are within walkable distance. The pool has been refurbished and is in good condition. The villa is simple but very clean and well maintained. We brought a group of friends and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We look forward to returning to Crete very soon.

Perfect family villa, very private & great accommodation.

  • 4 of 5

We recently stayed here with our 3 year old. Gorgeous Villa, impeccably clean and well maintained. I would highly recommend for families. A 2 minute drive to the beach - we never walked as the hill is fairly steep, however, it is walkable. The Tavernas are all good and the people so friendly. We did not have one bad meal! The beach is very clean with shallow waters - perfect for little ones.

As I mentioned - the accommodation was pristine. Fully functioning kitchen, and washing machine which came in handy! It would be great to have more plastic ware for around the pool and for little ones. Regarding the pool - which is beautiful and gated for safety (really important point so those toddlers don't toddle off by themselves!) The area around the pool gets very very slippery. There are signs saying take care but as the pool has a raised surround (which isn't slippery) once you step off you need to be very careful! Textured tiles would have made it a 5/5!

Great family holiday but a definite watch out around the beautiful pool.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the lovely review. The pool was brand new last year (!) though the surrounding outdoor patio tiles are from when the house was originally built. We chose these tiles ourselves and they are standard issue around many pools in other villas, designed to be used around wet areas so are designed to have non-slip characteristics. However, as with any pool, it is important not to run, though having had children of our own at the same age as yours, we do understand it can be difficult at times! This is why we designed all our pools with gates - perfect for promoting child safety. Our other pool at Villa Selene nearby has natural stone paving around the pool and this may be more suited to your next visit. See property 8049260.

Lovely villa

  • 5 of 5

We had our second lovely stay here. The villa's setting is tranquil and beautiful, but amenities including some excellent restaurants are not far away in the beach resort of Almirida and the lovely old village of Gavalachori. We divided our time between relaxing at the villa reading books and exploring in the car. It's easy to get up into the mountains from here, roads are empty and the scenery stunning!

The villa is kept clean and has excellent facilities and the owners are friendly and respond positively to any suggestions. Would recommend and would stay here again.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review! We agree that the location of the villa is just about as perfect as you can get - a short 15 minute walk from the lovely traditional village of Gavalochory where you can get a loaf of fresh bread from the bakery every day for under a euro, and just 3 minutes drive to the beach, bars and restaurants at Almyrida. There is an excellent restaurant up in the mountains at Dracona - video and directions are on our Facebook page (just search for 'Saint Basil Olive Grove') with live Cretan music every Saturday lunchtime. Next time you visit, you'll see we have added lot of colour around the outside of the house with decorated and painted 'found' objects from around the olive grove - 'countryside art' at its best!

Almyrida Village just 2 km away (3 minutes by car, or half an hour walk) with safe, sandy beaches and great places to eat. Here is a quiet seaside resort far from the bustle of the major tourist destinations. It is the ideal choice for families with children because there is an organised beach plus shops, restaurants and an ATM. There are two sandy beaches with umbrellas & loungers for hire, plus a lifeguard. The beaches and the sea are awarded a Blue Flag every year, demonstrating they are clean and that the beach provides the necessary safety features and visitor facilities – such as free showers at various points on the seafront. The sea is quite shallow, making it ideal for small children. The eastern end of the beach has sheltered, warm waters perfect for inquisitive youngsters who like to play near the shore chasing small shoals of fish and tiny hermit crabs, or amuse themselves by building sandcastles. Very close by, and directly overlooking the beach, is a variety of family-owned tavernas where dads and mums can de-stress in the shade with a cool glass of wine while keeping an eye on the kids playing nearby. Also on the beach, there is a windsurfing school with canoes and pedalos for hire and numerous boat trips available around the coast. For the slightly more adventurous, there is a diving school where beginners can try scuba diving – and for those with PADI qualifications, a visit to the famous underwater elephant cave is to be recommended. This coastline of Crete has the best and most impressive diving in the whole of Greece.

Gavalochory – the picturesque village with 1000 years of history. Inland, just a kilometre from the villa, is the traditional village of Gavalochory. This is a large village with particularly interesting and well-preserved folk architecture. There is an excellent folklore museum, revealing the history and the culture of the village. And don’t miss the Roman Wells just outside the village, a remarkable place of sunken wells where locals scollected water in ancient times. Shops include several minimarkets and a bakery. There are four tavernas – all of which offer excellent traditional Cretan cuisine.

Chania Town – 22 km away. Chania (pronounced Ha-nya) is famous for its beautiful Venetian (Italian architecture) harbour, with narrow winding cobbled streets that is every shopper's paradise, with a multitude of boutiques and jewellery vendors plus several markets. Sit at one of the many fine quayside tavernas and watch the world go by before taking a boat trip where you can go snorkelling around sheltered sandy bays of uninhabited islands. There is also the submerged wreck of a WW2 German Bomber to explore.

A good place to spend a morning is in the Maritime Museum of Crete – a multi-floor local museum full of models, graphics, memorabilia, costumes and military artefacts plus some educational video. It covers the time from ancient Minoan era to near present day and includes the famous Battle of Crete. A ‘must-see’ for anyone interested in WW2 history.

Other things to see and do

• Water Park at Limnoupolis (40 minute drive). Lots of slides providing varying levels of thrills and fun. Free sunbeds, good pools and an artificial ‘river’ where you can lie in a big rubber ring and gently float around the park.

• The Botannical Gardens of Crete (18 km south of Chania, 40 minute drive). A huge, colourful park full of fruit trees, herbs, medicinal and ornamental plants from all over the world - the perfect microclimate for hundreds of plants and animals. In the midst of this vivid landscape stands a burnt centennial olive tree, a memorial and a reference to the terrible fires of 2003, the park’s history and origin. The dramatic scenery here is composed of rare samples of the local flora and fauna, as well as tropical and subtropical species with new samples added regularly. There is a lake with ducks, geese and other water birds and rare species, even hawks that fly in the area. The park also has an open-air, stone atmospheric amphitheatre suitable for small (capacity for approximately 250 persons) events.

• Allied and German War Cemeteries on the outskirts of Chania (20 minute drive)

• The Samaria Gorge (1 hour drive) – at 16 km, one of the longest gorges in Europe. Open most days in the holiday season, but be prepared for a challenge.

• The Imbros Gorge (30 minute drive) – a little easier than Samaria, but still a good 8 km hike through sheer sided cliffs. Very pretty, so bring your camera. And plenty of bottled water.
