Near Almirida, Villa with Private Pool, Gated For Child Safety, 3 Mins To Beach

Updated: 01-Dec-2016
Villa Angelos near Almyrida ( Almirida ), Chania area, Crete - Quiet But Not Remote, Walk to Shops, Sandy Blue Flag Beach

Fully air conditioned throughout at no extra charge. Private BBQ. Own private drive / imposing gates. British plumbing! (no small-bore WC pipes!).Note: Additional bedrooms are available on request. This villa is bigger than it appears - we charge by occupancy, so if your group requires another bedroom or two, these can be unlocked! Please enquire!

IMPORTANT NOTE TO PARENTS WITH SMALL CHILDREN! This villa has a downstairs kitchen which looks out directly onto the gated pool. This means you can see your children playing in the pool while you are preparing lunch! Many other villas in the area have not been designed with holidaymakers like you in mind because they have an upstairs (Greek Style) kitchen which means you may have to balance a meal and a drink on a tray while walking down a flight of stairs with a toddler following behind you or under your feet! We designed this feature BEFORE the houses were built - you are not an afterthought!

Close to the villa are two villages. Almyrida, by the beach, is only a 3 minute drive away or you can walk it in half an hour. Gavalochori, further inland, is only a 1 minute drive away and you can walk there in less than 15 minutes.(We walk it in 12 minutes).

Our guests often comment that this villa is in the perfect location: within walking distance from the two villages, close enough to enjoy their facilities but not too close to be disturbed by barking dogs, crowing cockerels and noisy human nightlife that happens in any and every Cretan village or town.

The villa is located in a peaceful private olive grove of 4.5 acres (17,000 square metres). It is one of only 5 villas in the olive grove, all of which are owned by us. The olive grove is secure, being fenced and hedged by colourful oleander, and surrounded by olive trees. It is the perfect base to explore the picturesque Apokoronas area on foot or by car, with its tiny white hamlets nestled on green mountainsides. Apokoronas is a designated area of natural beauty, protected in a similar way to a UK National Park. At all times there are breath-taking views of the White Mountains which are snowcapped until late May. Literally on your doorstep there are numerous foot-trails through this most spectacular area of Crete, a genuine walker’s paradise.

***NEW FOR 2016 SEASON ***

The pool has been upgraded with new concrete and tiles to create a gentle stepped area down into the pool. This means small children and people with mobility issues can get into the pool unaided. It is a very sociable place to sit and chat at the end of a sunny day with a glass of wine!

POOL DEPTH is a constant 1.25 metres, not including walk down steps.

Width is 4.5 metres, length is 8.5 metres

About the Owner

My name is John and I look after the bookings for our 4 houses which we have built on the lovely Saint Basil Olive Grove, just a short distance from Almyrida, Crete. My wife and I jointly own the properties together with my best friend and his wife, and we have been offering guests the chance to holiday in this spectacular part of the world since 2005 - sharing our vision of this lovely island. You'll notice, from the text alongside,. that I speak fluent Mandarin! Before my current full time job managing our bookings, I lived and worked in Hong Kong for 20 years.

Clean, attractive villa with most things necessary for a relaxing stay. The layout was perfect, with pool and veranda which can be seen from kitchen & living area. The villa was in an ideal location, near the villages of Almyrida & Gavalochori. Would certainly recommend the villa to others.

Both Karen and I had a wonderful time at time in Crete and were very sorry to have to leave. You have a fantastic set up and I have been very

busy promoting it to friends, family, customers and anyone else who will listen to me!

John, Sept 2012

We thought the villa was in an ideal situation - peaceful but not isolated and within walking distance of the taverna and an easy drive for a quick dip in the sea . It all looked very well cared for and had everything we needed. We found all the pre-holiday information excellent and all in all a pretty professional and friendly experience .We would recommend you and certainly hope to repeat it ourselves.

Villa Angelos. Exactly as it looks and is described in the owners direct information..

  • 5 of 5

My wife and i had a superb holiday at Villa Angelos. The interior of the Villa was clean and well maintained, spacious in both the living/dining areas(kitchen well equipped) and the bedrooms, the external areas for dining/relaxing were perfectly adequate and the pool area was fantastic,if you wanted to be picky you could say the fridge and TV could do with updating. The local manager Mark and his good lady June were very friendly and helpful, during the two weeks we stayed towels/sheets were changed midweek and weekend and also the Villa cleaning carried out at the same time. This was our first visit to Crete and we loved this region.West Crete has superb scenery, lovely little coastal and mountain villages, having a car for the two weeks allowed us to do plenty of exploring(some fairly exhilarating drives in the mountains, very spectacular,on occasions my wife was glad to be back around sea level and off the hairpin roads) no issues with directions in general signs were fairly easy to follow. Chania itself is well worth a visit, particularly around the port and the old town.We found that the exploring mixed perfectly with relaxing at the Villa pool and local beaches.Evenings were spent either in Almirida/Gavalachory or Plaka where there were plenty of good tavernas to choose from and the hospitality was excellent. We did walk from the Villa into Gavalachory on three occasions in the evening, fortunately we took the advice given and purchased a very strong new torch before we went on holiday and it was definately required. Almirida was a nice walk down to the village but we taxied back for only approx.7/8 euros.(didn't attempt the walk back) When going to Plaka we decided to cut down on the drinking and drive (Wine aplenty in the fridge on return.) There are plenty of shops/supermarkets around for anything you could need, even a very good English butchers in Vamos (particularly good bacon and sausages).

A superb holiday, as i have said previously it was our first visit to Western Crete but it won't be our last.

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking the time to review our Villa Angelos. We will replace the TV with a bigger, up to date LCD screen over the winter ready for the 2017 season in April and also take a look at the fridge, which I think just needs some shelf replacing. Hope to welcome you again soon!

Beautiful villa in Cretan countryside near the sea

  • 5 of 5

The villa is precisely as described and the photos reflect it accurately. It is clean and well maintained, with the local manager giving excellent service with a personal touch. Nothing is too much trouble. We would definitely recommend this, and the other villas in St Basil's olive grove. The mountain views are breathtaking and nearby Gavalochori village is a delight, with two excellent tavernas. 2.5km away the seaside village of Almyrida offers a range of shops, bars, tavernas and seaside activities. Top tip:use AutoClub car rentals.

Owner's Response: If you plan to hire a car we recommend a local car hire company, Autoclub. We like to give as much business as possible to local companies - they offer a more personalised service than the larger multinationals and AutoClub, based in Almyrida, know our villas very well, so offer good service with pick up and drop off at the airport or delivery to your villa. They also provide a 'FOLLOW ME' service from the airport where they will personally guide you to your exact villa. When you contact them please use the code “Saint Basil” and you will receive a 20 Euro discount for any booking over 90 Euro between 1st May and 31st October. You also have the option of in car wi-fi for 6 Euro per day. You can contact them at www.autoclub-rentals.gr or call them on + 30 28250 32301.

Owner's Response: Samaria is well worth a visit and there is a lovely beach when you get to the end of the gorge. If you prefer a slightly shorter gorge walk the Omros Gorge is about half the distance

Villa Angelos ,Quiet and peaceful location, but near to all amenities of Almirida and Gavalahori

  • 4 of 5

After returning to Villa Angelos for a second time. we we're pleasantly surprised to see the pool had been updated and was now tiled with steps down into the water. there's not quite enough sunbeds and umbrellas if you were a party of eight.. but i'm sure extras could be asked for as Mark the manger is very obliging. The terrace is well furnished with a huge table chairs, enough to seat 8 people comfortably, there is also a rattan sofa and chair ,its ideal to sit there to escape from the heat of the sun! also a large BBQ sits across the the corner of the patio if you feel inclined to use it !!!

Inside the villa is also well furnished with two leather sofas a coffee table and a side table,a small TV is mounted on the wall along with disc player and satellite box, another table and chairs for indoor dining .it has good lighting with fans attached a breakfast bar separates the lounge from the kitchen ..which is on the small side but very well equipped with everything you could wish for and all of good quality, from cutlery to china and pots and pans, downstairs shower room with a wash machine and double bedroom , suitable for the elderly or disabled with access directly onto the terrace.

Upstairs there are three further bedrooms ,1 master double bed & 2 with twin beds, a bathroom with shower & bath.... the bed linen is of a superior quality cotton, also the towels.. no complaints there.

Almyrida is not far away 5 mins in a car or a steady walk down takes about 25 mins,You must have a stroll to the village of Gavalahori Its about 15 mins walk its a typical Cretan working village ,there are good taverna's here and the food is very good in all of them.I would definitely recommend Angelos it is the best Villa we have stayed in.The Villa is an ideal base for exploring the island 20 mins to the main highway and the island of Crete is yours..

All in All the Villa Angelos is well situated, nestled in the olive grove, its peaceful, with wonderful views of the white mountains and the surrounding foothills.. its well presented inside and out ... lots of traditional villages short drives away and of.course the beautiful Venetian Port of Chania , with its picturesque streets and nooks and cranny,s is well worth a visit ...

Mr & Mrs G Turner Stayed 5th to 19th July 2016 (and enjoyed every minute)

Thanks to John,Marcus, and Mark for all your help and invaluable information, roll on next year.

Owner's Response: There should have been 8 sun beds at the villa so we will look into that and ensure that any missing sunbeds are returned. Thanks very much to this guest who has really been able to bring out all the good points about the villa and the surrounding areas

Another Spring visit

  • 4 of 5

A perfect setting for a Spring break. Great customer service both here in the UK and in Crete.

The villa was clean and tidy on arrival with everything we expected. Mark was great when we blew the kettle!

The villas are in a tranquil setting, though tavernas and shops are within walking distance, a car is helpful to have, especially if you want visit places slightly further afield. The Botanical Gardens of Crete are well worth a visit.

Enjoyed the new pool too!

Owner's Response: We do recommend a car because there are so many fabulous places to visit in the area including mountain drives, trips to the South coast and the wonderful town of Chania and its beautiful Venetian Harbour

Lovely private secluded villa. Ideal for a family holid at.

  • 4 of 5

We have just spent a lovely relaxed week staying at the Villa Angelos.

The photos don't do this villa justice. It is a beautiful villa, secluded and private. It was spacious and well fitted out with everything you need for a holiday. We have never had a villa holiday before and we were very impressed.

It is secluded though so if you are looking for a lively holiday this is not the villa for you. If you want peace & quiet with only the sounds of crickets, birds & goat's then I can recommend Villa Angelos.

We walked to the nearest village in the morning for fresh bread and pastries - it's about a 15 min walk there & is a lovely Greek village with a fantastic restaurant. The seaside town of Almyrida is a little future but easily walkable. There is a big choice of restaurants all with a superb sea view. Take a torch if you want to walk at night - there are no street lights on the road to the villa.

All in all - a perfect holiday which I have no hesitating in recommending.

From the Owner

The location is perfect. You can walk to the beach in half an hour and be in my favourite taverna in Gavalochory village in well under 15 minutes. After holidaying together in Spain with our friends and our own young children, we knew that building swimming pools with gates was very important. And not being overlooked! Our villas are betwee 60 - 200 metres apart from one another so you never feel hemmed in by other holidaymakers next door. This particular house actually has extra bedrooms available so you can accommodate up to 8 people in comfort Or 9 with an optional camp bed. As we charge by occupancy, this gives you real flexibility as you can add extra guests at any time up to your day of departure.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Chania at 18 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : Gavalachori/Almyrida at 1 Kilometres Nearest Ferry : Souda at 12 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Almyrida Blue Flag at 2.5 Kilometres Car: recommended

Almyrida Village just 2 km away (3 minutes by car, or half an hour walk) with safe, sandy beaches and great places to eat. Here is a quiet seaside resort far from the bustle of the major tourist destinations. It is the ideal choice for families with children because there is an organised beach plus shops, restaurants and an ATM. There are two sandy beaches with umbrellas & loungers for hire, plus a lifeguard. The beaches and the sea are awarded a Blue Flag every year, demonstrating they are clean and that the beach provides the necessary safety features and visitor facilities – such as free showers at various points on the seafront. The sea is quite shallow, making it ideal for small children. The eastern end of the beach has sheltered, warm waters perfect for inquisitive youngsters who like to play near the shore chasing small shoals of fish and tiny hermit crabs, or amuse themselves by building sandcastles. Very close by, and directly overlooking the beach, is a variety of family-owned tavernas where dads and mums can de-stress in the shade with a cool glass of wine while keeping an eye on the kids playing nearby. Also on the beach, there is a windsurfing school with canoes and pedalos for hire and numerous boat trips available around the coast. For the slightly more adventurous, there is a diving school where beginners can try scuba diving – and for those with PADI qualifications, a visit to the famous underwater elephant cave is to be recommended. This coastline of Crete has the best and most impressive diving in the whole of Greece.

Gavalochory – the picturesque village with 1000 years of history. Inland, just a kilometre from the villa, is the traditional village of Gavalochory. This is a large village with particularly interesting and well-preserved folk architecture. There is an excellent folklore museum, revealing the history and the culture of the village. And don’t miss the Roman Wells just outside the village, a remarkable place of sunken wells where locals scollected water in ancient times. Shops include several minimarkets and a bakery. There are four tavernas – all of which offer excellent traditional Cretan cuisine.

Chania Town – 22 km away. Chania (pronounced Ha-nya) is famous for its beautiful Venetian (Italian architecture) harbour, with narrow winding cobbled streets that is every shopper's paradise, with a multitude of boutiques and jewellery vendors plus several markets. Sit at one of the many fine quayside tavernas and watch the world go by before taking a boat trip where you can go snorkelling around sheltered sandy bays of uninhabited islands. There is also the submerged wreck of a WW2 German Bomber to explore.

A good place to spend a morning is in the Maritime Museum of Crete – a multi-floor local museum full of models, graphics, memorabilia, costumes and military artefacts plus some educational video. It covers the time from ancient Minoan era to near present day and includes the famous Battle of Crete. A ‘must-see’ for anyone interested in WW2 history.

Other things to see and do

• Water Park at Limnoupolis (40 minute drive). Lots of slides providing varying levels of thrills and fun. Free sunbeds, good pools and an artificial ‘river’ where you can lie in a big rubber ring and gently float around the park.

• The Botannical Gardens of Crete (18 km south of Chania, 40 minute drive). A huge, colourful park full of fruit trees, herbs, medicinal and ornamental plants from all over the world - the perfect microclimate for hundreds of plants and animals. In the midst of this vivid landscape stands a burnt centennial olive tree, a memorial and a reference to the terrible fires of 2003, the park’s history and origin. The dramatic scenery here is composed of rare samples of the local flora and fauna, as well as tropical and subtropical species with new samples added regularly. There is a lake with ducks, geese and other water birds and rare species, even hawks that fly in the area. The park also has an open-air, stone atmospheric amphitheatre suitable for small (capacity for approximately 250 persons) events.

• Allied and German War Cemeteries on the outskirts of Chania (20 minute drive)

• The Samaria Gorge (1 hour drive) – at 16 km, one of the longest gorges in Europe. Open most days in the holiday season, but be prepared for a challenge.

• The Imbros Gorge (30 minute drive) – a little easier than Samaria, but still a good 8 km hike through sheer sided cliffs. Very pretty, so bring your camera. And plenty of bottled water.
