Peaceful Period Cottage

Updated: 13-Nov-2016
Riverside 2 bedroom period cottage 15 mins walk to seafront and beach

The cottage is believed to be about 150 yrs old and retains many charming original features. It is fully double glazed & has gas central heating. The front door is reached by a flight of 5 steps so we don't recommend the cottage if there are mobility issues. Inside, the ceilings and doors are low in places, and there are some changes in level which need care. All part of the charm!

It adjoins National Trust land known as the Byes Riverside Park through which the river Sid passes close by on its way down to the sea about 1km distant. The accommodation is on 3 floors. 7 windows in the end elevation give fine rural views over the river valley. On the ground floor there is a well equipped kitchen, a small dining room, a comfortable sitting room with woodburning stove leading to a conservatory with electric heater. Outside there is a southfacing patio and garden with views across the valley. On the first floor is a charming bedroom with windows east & south, a bathroom with electric shower, bath, basin & toilet. Adjacent is another toilet with wash basin in which a washing machine is located. A flight of stairs leads to the second bedroom which also has 2 windows with lovely views.

At night it is often possible to hear the river if the windows are open.

About the Owner

Olga & I are a retired professional couple who have lived & worked mostly in the Midlands. We have also spent time working overseas so we have seen a good bit of the world. But we always say that there is nowhere more beautiful than the English countryside, and Sidmouth in particular. The cottage is in a unique peaceful position and yet the shops and beaches are easily accessible on foot.

We have seven grandchildren and they all love the place to bits.

We go there regularly both winter & summer. As a result the cottage feels warm and lived in. We have always had dogs and the cottage is ideally placed for them.

It will appeal to people who want to explore the area, have a seaside holiday, or just enjoy a restful break.

End terrace cottage. 6 deep steps up to front door.

A comfy cottage, clean enough. Accommodation on three storeys with steps up and down from 1st floor bedroom to landing then up and down again into the bathroom and separate w.c. Plus a narrow steep staircase up to the top bedroom, no door just a curtain at the top. The use of

the washing machine was welcome. We enjoyed our week in Sidmouth and mostly the weather was kind to us.

This is our third time staying at this wonderful homely cottage. It's position by The Byes (a lovely riverside park) makes it perfect for any four-legged friends who are holidaying with you! The cottage is very well equipped and comfortable - we hope to visit again next year. Highly recommended.

Cosy cottage, well equipped

  • 5 of 5

We have a lovely week at the end of July in this beautiful, comfortable cosy cottage. The cottage is well equipped with everything you need and has beautiful decor. The location was idyllic with a short stroll along the Byes each day to the Esplanade and sea front. We felt truly revived after our stay and will definitely be going back.

A very comfortable, well equipped and well positioned cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a great week in this really comfortable and very well equipped cottage. It was ideally placed for touring the surrounding areas and it was just a pleasant stroll, through the Byes, into town. We found all the neighbours really friendly and incredibly helpful. We hope to go back in the near future.

We had a wonderful time in Sidmouth made even better with the perfect cottage near the river Bye. The cottage was well equipped and was home from home. We would certainly recommend this delightful place. We took a pleasant walk with our dog into the town most days along the river. Thank you Peter and Olga.

Beautiful, riverside cottage.

  • 5 of 5

We spent a really lovely week here during the summer. The cottage itself is delightful, set on a quiet lane with interesting features and tasteful decoration. The conservatory and garden provide a peaceful area for relaxation overlooking "The Byes" parkland and river. The walk into Sidmouth is very gentle and flat and follows the river for the most part. It usually took us about 5-10 minutes.

The cottage is extremely well maintained and is spotlessly clean.

There are brochures providing local information and maps of the surrounding area available to use.

The beds are comfortable, there are two toilets and the kitchen has all the appliances and utensils you could ever need. The internet access is very good (a necessity for families!)

Booking was easy and the owners were very helpful regarding any queries we had.

All in all, I would thoroughly recommend this property to anyone, it's a real beauty. (We've already booked for next year!)

From the Owner

Olga's family used to take many holidays at the nearby Salcombe Regis campsite and Sidmouth was the place that we got to know well So when the chance arose we bought the cottage in 1986. Sidmouth is on the Jurassic Coast which offers outstanding UK coastal scenery. It is a completely unspoiled and unashamedly traditional stylish Regency seaside town. But there is a lot going on around the town including a lively folk festival in August. The town claims an excellent sunshine record. But we are talking about Devon... so caveat emptor! In the event of inclement weather there is a small old fashioned cinema, the Norman Lockyear observatory open to visitors, and lots of eating establishments to suit all pockets! There are no amusement arcades or funfairs.
