About the property

Riverside 2 bedroom period cottage 20 mins walk to seafront and beach

The cottage is believed to be about 150 yrs old and retains many charming original features. It is fully double glazed & has gas central heating. The front door is reached by a flight of 5 steps so we don't recommend the cottage if there are mobility issues. Inside, the ceilings and doors are low in places, and there are some changes in level which need care. All part of the charm!

It adjoins National Trust land known as the Byes Riverside Park through which the river Sid passes close by on its way down to the sea about 1km distant. The accommodation is on 3 floors. 7 windows in the end elevation give fine rural views over the river valley. On the ground floor there is a well equipped kitchen, a small dining room, a comfortable sitting room with woodburning stove leading to a conservatory with with a round table and Lloyd Loom chairs - very suitable for meals or just relaxing. Outside there is a south facing sheltered patio and lawned garden with views to the river and across the valley. On the first floor is a charming bedroom with windows east & south, a bathroom with electric shower, bath, basin & toilet. Adjacent is another toilet with wash basin in which a washing machine is located. A flight of stairs leads to the second bedroom which also has 2 windows with lovely views.

At night it is often possible to hear the river if the windows are open.

About Peter Jackson

Olga & I are a retired professional couple who have lived & worked mostly in the Midlands. We have also spent time working overseas so we have seen a good bit of the world. But we always say that there is nowhere more beautiful than the English countryside, and Sidmouth in particular. The cottage is in a unique peaceful position and yet the shops and beaches are easily accessible on foot.

We have seven grandchildren and they all love the place to bits.

We go there regularly both winter & summer. As a result the cottage feels warm and lived in. We have always had dogs and the cottage is ideally placed for them.

It will appeal to people who want to explore the area, have a seaside holiday, or just enjoy a restful break.

Why Peter Jackson chose Sidmouth

Olga's family used to take many holidays at the nearby Salcombe Regis campsite and Sidmouth was the place that we got to know well So when the chance arose we bought the cottage in 1986. It's prime position overlooking the Byes Riverside Park is the special feature. Our guests repeatedly praise it's homely character and level of equipment and comfort which is due to the fact that we come here often ourselves.

Sidmouth is on the Jurassic Coast which offers outstanding UK coastal scenery. It is a completely unspoiled and unashamedly traditional stylish Regency seaside town. But there is a lot going on around the town including the well known folk festival every August. The Manor Pavilion Theatre presents frequent plays, musicals and recitals all to a very high standard.

There is an old fashioned cinema, the Norman Lockyear astronomical observatory open to visitors, and lots of eating establishments to suit all pockets! There are no amusement arcades or funfairs.

What makes this cottage unique

The best feature of the property is that you can, if you wish, park your car and find everything within easy walking distance.

However it is also an excellent base for touring the surrounding area. Our high proportion of repeat bookings speaks for itself.

Outside: The south facing fully enclosed rear garden is bounded by an old cobblestone wall covered with roses. It overlooks attractive riverside parkland (The Byes). Garden furniture is available in the shed. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Guests are invited to bring their own sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers and towels. (All beds are full size singles.) On request we can provide the above at an additional cost of £12.50 per person per week. Property is cleaned between lettings. Other: One bedroom is retained by owners for storage on first floor. No access for guests.

Wonderful cottage in relaxing location

The Perfect Getaway

We have just had our fourth stay at the cottage and love it because it doesn't change for which reason it is so 'comforting' to quote Winnie the Pooh. Just like honey which I always take with me. The property is a home, not just a holiday let and its situation with the river in view from the house is perfect. We love Sidmouth with all its varied shops and facilities. What more could one want even in the snow which we experienced and made it even more enchanting. Shirley

Well equipped home

This is an ideally placed property with access straight on to The Byes a lovely park which leads to the town and sea. The property is fully equipped with added extras like spare dog bowls, umbrellas, books and CD's. Parking can be a problem at busy times but the property makes up for that little hassle.

Super, homely and clean cottage

Very well positioned cottage for the Byes and walking into Sidmouth. Great for dogs, with enclosed garden. I have a large car so manoeuvring in and out of the road was tight with the parked cars. Cottage was very comfy with everything working well to make it a very enjoyable stay

The seafront & beach are a 15 minutes pleasant walk along the river. There are two beaches - both offer sand and rockpools at low tide. Swimming is generally safe. There is an active sailing club.

Nearest airports, Exeter & Bristol. Journey time by car from Birmingham and London is approx 2.5 hrs.

The property can be reached by train to Exeter and bus to Sidmouth.

Distances:

Nearby places of interest include Exeter 12 miles, Lyme Regis 13 miles, Honiton 6 miles, and many picturesque villages within a few miles eg Branscombe, Beer, Seaton, Budleigh Salterton, Otterton.

The S Devon coast path runs through Sidmouth.

Changeover Day:
The changeover day is Saturday. The rental period is normally 7 days minimum, but shorter breaks may be accepted in low season. Arrival is any time after 1400 and departure time not later than 10 am.

  • 50% refund for cancellations more than 30 days before check-in date.
