About abbey arkotxa

My husband and I met as students at Edinburgh University and have always loved the city. We moved back to Scotland 2 years ago and now run a small property rental and development business.

We now live on a sheep farm north of Edinburgh with our young family but regularly visit the city to enjoy all it has to offer.

We enjoy finding flats in Edinburgh that we know to be in excellent locations and which we enjoy staying in ourselves.

We buy good quality furniture and fittings that we enjoy using and looking at ourselves and strive for very high standards of cleanliness from the firm of professional cleaners we employ.

We started renting to holiday makers in April 09 and have had extremely positive feedback about how lovely our flats are to stay in.

abbey arkotxa purchased this apartment in 2009

Why abbey arkotxa chose Edinburgh

We have always aspired to own a beautiful Georgian flat in the best part of Edinburgh's the New Town.

We bought this flat in July 2008 and in conjunction with Historic Scotland and a local architect, have carried out a complete renovation, restoring many original features and a sense of grandeur to what was a tired old rental property.

We love the vibrancy of the location - it is just a few minutes walk to George Street, Princes St and St Andrew's Square and all the major Art Galleries and Theatres. In spite of the central location it is a very peaceful flat as it looks on to Drummond Place Gardens.

What makes this apartment unique

Broughton Street is a minute's walk from the flat and is crammed full of lovely restaurants, cafes and bars which are open throughout the day.

The best feature of our flat has to be the large open plan area. To achieve this we knocked a wall down and now have 3 large sash windows that let in the morning sun and give wonderful views across the gardens and the New Town. This is great space to socialise and relax. The bedrooms are all to the back and top of the flat which means they pick up all the afternoon sun and are far removed from any street noise. Enjoy!

Great location in Edinburgh New Town

  • 4 of 5

This flat has everything you need for a comfortable and relaxing stay in the heart of Scotland's capital city. So much to see and do within a relatively short distance. There are hills and steps aplenty so we ended up much fitter from our week away than before although a few pounds heavier from all the fine eating. For the less sophisticated there is the home of the deep-fried mars bar within a short walk. I would have easily given five stars for this flat but for a few minor niggles. The beds are very comfortable but have no headboards and the hot water didn't work on one morning but with helpful advice over the phone I managed to re-pressurise the system.

The large lounge was ideal for family activities (adults in our case). The flat would not really suit a family with small children due to the tall flights of stone steps leading up to front door.

Views to the front are lovely, overlooking Drummond Place and there are nice views to the rear over other people's gardens from the bedrooms that are all at the back. One of the bedrooms is a quirky and characterful upper floor room with a double bed and plenty of space.

The location is about 10 minutes walk from Edinburgh Waverley Railway Station and the excellent range of shops.

There is no external amenity space for this flat but that is not what you would expect for a top floor. It's a nice quiet location and we slept soundly every night.

I would highly recommend this superb flat for a visit to Edinburgh in all seasons.

Nice clean flat and helpful owner

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay here for four days in June. Abbey was very helpful and a real pleasure to work with. The flat itself was clean and comfortable. The living room had a bit of traffic noise, but the rooms were surprisingly quiet. Our only critique is that there was a washer but no dryer. The listing does say washer, but I incorrectly assumed there would be a dryer as well. The location was nice, though a bit of a walk from Old Town. It took us about 25 minutes but we were probably slower than most with a group of six. It's also a bit of a walk from Waverly bus station to the hotel for key pickup, then to the flat (especially in the rain with bags), so I would definitely recommend taking a cab. The Tram station is closer, though still uphill initially. It took us about 15 minutes to get to the tram with bags for our return trip to the airport. I would definitely do the tram rather than the bus in the future. We found some good food and pubs in the immediate area, Magnum in particular. They were super friendly. Overall we found the flat to be clean, spacious and comfortable. Just as important, the owner was a joy to work with, and the whole process was straightforward. Thank you Abbey!

Fantastic Location and Beautiful Apartment

  • 5 of 5

This is a great apartment. The location is perfect, within walking distance of the old town, close to shopping and restaurants on a quiet Georgian square, it was ideal. The apartment has everything we needed, very comfortable and Abbey was great to deal with. We would absolutely rent it again. Thanks Abbey

Great flat; close to everything

  • 5 of 5

We loved the flat! All agreed we outdid ourselves in staying here. It was close to everything without being surrounded by the crowds. Cozy pubs and groceries close by. Close to all sites and the cycling paths, we would highly recommend staying here at Drummond Place.
