Description

Studiolo Apartment sleeps 2/4. Peaceful surroundings, panoramic view

This lovely apartment was originally an artist’s studio. The living room has full length windows, facing south, with a spectacular view over the valley of Camaiore to the hills beyond and the sea. On very clear days we can see Corsica outlined on the horizon. The winter sunsets are fabulous. The spacious room with its high sloping ceiling has a seating area with a large sofa and very comfortable chairs. The dining table seats six and the open plan kitchen area is fully equipped for all culinary needs. The lovely old marble sink gives great character to the room. There are two double bedrooms, one of which can also be a twin room. Two bathrooms with showers. The bedrooms look out onto the olive groves and are very quiet, and cool in the summer months.

There is an attic bedroom, ideal for storage.

About the property

PERALTA TUSCANY

The two apartments described below are part of the beautiful peaceful hamlet of Peralta, located in a spectacular setting in the Tuscan hills that rise high above the valley of Camaiore. With stunning, panoramic views over the valley to the hills and sea beyond and surrounded by terraces of olive groves, its stone walls covered with purple bougainvilleas, lemon trees, jasmine, Peralta seems like paradise, a place for people seeking tranquility and beauty. There is a swimming pool on an upper terrace with a panoramic view towards the sea. The large terrace in front of Peralta is a lovely place to sit with a glass of wine, enjoy the sunsets and meet other guests.

The hamlet was restored with great love and imagination by international sculptor Fiore de Henriquez. She created a place that is quite unique and very inspiring for anyone with creative tendancies. Peralta was Fiore's home up to her death in June 2004, and one can see her work all through the hamlet. Her sculpture everywhere, and the manner in which she restored and designed the hamlet give it very special atmosphere and character.

We are surrounded by lovely walking country with marked trails through the olive groves and hills dense with chestnut trees and known for their wild flowers in spring and autumn. Walks range from 50 minutes to a delightful restaurant in an adjoining village, to three hours up to the peak of the Mount Prana above Peralta.

Peralta offers various self catering accommodation sleeping from 2 to 8 and 4 additional bedrooms with bathrooms. As described more fully further down the page, the whole hamlet sleeps 30 or so and can be booked in its entirety for parties. Many a family party or important birthday has been celebrated here!

A previous guest offered this description of Peralta :

'The atmosphere is relaxed, the staff have a rare quality of being there but conspicuously absent unless needed. This adds to the calm of the place, giving a feel of personal space and privacy. It has a sense of a well-run hotel, without the formality, and the ambiance of a private villa without the expense. I was fortunate to have cast an eye over a few of the other properties available; all are very well appointed and would not fail to please.

Whether you’re wanting to collect your thoughts, relax, explore the region, write a novel, or paint a masterpiece this has to be the place to visit.'

Why Kate or Dinah chose Versilia

Intenrational sculptor Fiore de Henriquez lived in the area of Camaiore due to its proximity to the Carrara marble quarries and the bronze foundries of nearby Pietrasanta. In the 1970's she found the small hamlet of Peralta, perched on the hillside above Camaiore. It was remote, served only by a footpath, and the buildings were mainly in ruins - their inhabitants having left in the mid 1950's due to the hard living in the hills. No water nor electricity at this time. Fiore fell in love with the hamlet and managed to gradually buy the various houses. She then set about restoring them and the hamlet and created the very unique place that exists today. She died in 2004 and the hamlet was then taken over by a very good friend who owns it today. Repairs and renovations are undertaken where necessary, but the essential essence of the hamlet remains the same as when Fiore was alive. It is the home of her archive and sculptures, which can be seen throughout the grounds and in the various accommodation.

What makes this apartment unique

It is hard to describe the absolute charm and beauty of Peralta and why I am so passionate about it. I now own it and am as much in love with it as Fiore before me. Every corner has its surprises, small details to delight the eye. The wisterias and bougainvilleas offer vibrant colour and essential shade. The views are wonderful, changing with the light, with the weather, with the season. Sunsets are magic. Early morning mist lying in the valley. The sight of Corsica on a clear day. The large bronze sculpture of 'The Phoenix' on the main terrace about to fly off over the valley. Fiore used to say it signifies 'Peralta rising from the ashes'. The many sculptures Fiore left for visitors to enjoy on the terraces. Her private gallery which I love to show to guests and one evening a week, at aperitivo time, I invite any guests staying at Peralta to a viewing of the gallery and Fiore's original house I hope many visitors will find their way to Peralta and enjoy it as much I do ......... possibly even fall in love with it! Guestbook comments from the manager

We were seeking a relaxing holiday with an authentic Tuscan charm and a tranquil setting, Peralta ticked all the boxes. For two adults and one

child, STUDIOLO was the ideal set-up to pass peaceful days that seemed to never end - might sound like cliche that, but this is just how it

was. The self-catering apartment was furnished in a traditional rustic

style, with basic bathroom fittings and decorated with emotive

sculpture and paintings by Fiore de Henriquez. We cooked daily using

the kitchen and any needs were immediately accommodated by the

extremely warm and welcoming Kate. As we walked across the hills

between the olive groves we came across lemons, cherry trees, figs,

vines and wild herbs growing in their natural environs. The relaxing and clean pool overlooked a breathtaking view of the valley below with the towns of Camaiore and Pietrasanta in the distance. Trips to local shops and markets meant we were able to stock up on the finest food and drink that Tuscany has to offer. The beach was only a short journey away but we preferred to unwind and relax at Peralta for the most part. We returned from our week there completely re-energised! Absolutely perfect for our needs. We have been back on many occasions and Peralta continues to rejuvenate. It’s a real treat, retreat on repeat ! We’ve already booked our next return.

Stunning location, unforgettable views, relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Peralta is a special place in Tuscany, we booked a 9 day stay for our honeymoon and had an incredible time. Both Kate and Chris were very welcoming and helpful. We took our 20 month old son with us and at first were a bit worried about the steep drops from the footpaths but it was fine when we arrived. Harry loved exploring Peralta and climbing the stairs to the pool, and of course running after the dogs Ellie and Bracha. The views from our balcony and from the pool were amazing, we will miss the sunsets at Peralta.

Perfect place for an outstanding relaxing holiday

  • 5 of 5

At Peralta you feel the same way as coming home to your nearest relatives. There is a very friendly and warm atmosphere and the people at Peralta really care for you.

The accommodation is superb - it is definitely not standard, but very personal and individual. The houses and studios are very well equipped especially if you like cooking.

We have been at Peralta in 2013 and 2015 and we for sure plan to go there again as soon as possible. It is a place we always will keep in our mind as our best summer holidays ever.

It is a challenge to get there first time by car but when you have arrived you forget everything about the drive up the hill. A small car is really commendable.

A gorgeous, idyllic haven with amazing views.

  • 5 of 5

We had such an amazing stay here at Peralta, one of our favourite holidays ever. The hamlet is perched on a hillside, so be prepared for a winding ascent, but the tricky drive is worth it in order to reach the spectacular location.

The beautiful old buildings have been sympathetically restored and furnished with charming antique furniture to create characterful 'homes', they are set amongst rambling gardens and olive groves; the sculpture around the gardens provides great interest and offers something that is of the heart of Peralta.

We stayed in the Studiolo apartment; quirky and comfortable, it had everything we needed, was spotlessly clean, had two lovely bathrooms and was just a wonderful place to relax and spend time in.

Dinah, Kate and their team are wonderful hosts and will take care of you without being intrusive. Do try the delicious home cooking! Also the animals of Peralta are an added bonus and made our stay extra special, Ellie the dog was our friend and companion for the duration of our stay. We miss her lots.

Our first visit to Tuscany was fantastic in so many ways and truly memorable, so thank you Peralta!

otherworldly place in the hills of Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

We still think of our week here as one of our best experiences in Italy ever. Every bit as magic as the homepage claims - and then some.

Both Kate and Dinah are great hosts and want to do everything they can to turn your holiday into something unforgettable. At the same time they are enthusiastic keepers and protectors of the place and its magic, formed over a period of 30 years by its founder. In fact, the whole place is something of an artwork in itself.

We're always looking for places with a relaxed atmosphere, places that are not overtly businesslike. Where you can bring your kids but the vibe of the place is not McDonalds and plastic furniture, where you feel welcome and respected as a thinking human being... Wine !? take some from the fridge and write it on your bill yourself. There's ice in the other fridge and a cooler you can bring to the terrace as well. While we do hope you'll cook your own food, you can have ma cook some genuine italian food for you at reasonable prices.

That's Peralta. You're staying in the private home of an artist. Recommended.

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

Peralta surpassed all expectations. The hamlet is set high above the Mediterranean Sea, nestling among the tree studded hills.

Studiolo where we stayed sleeps six comfortably with two bedrooms (with large double beds) two wet rooms with excellent showers, an attic room with two beds perfect for children. It has a large sunny living room (with a wonderful view of the hills and the sea) with a kitchen on one side and a dining table as well as a comfy sofa and easy chairs. It was very clean.

Dinah and her helpers were charming, courteous and efficient and Lara's cooking was perfect; rustic Italian food, quite delicious, as was the local wine, not to mention the Limoncello!

We would highly recommend Peralta to anybody wanting to get away from it all.

There is a lovely little restaurant about an hour away by foot but we recommend lunch as it might be tricky in the dark.

We shall certainly be back; it is an experience not to be missed.

A well-appointed apartment in magical Peralta

  • 5 of 5

The Studiolo apartment is in the heart of Peralta, with breathtakingly beautiful views over the hills and valleys below, and the sea beyond. It has comfortable beds for up to six, two being in the loft and more fun for children, which we did not test out, there being only three of us. Its spacious combined kitchen, dining and living room, and its two wetroom-type bathrooms with showers, make it a comfortable modernised environment to live in, within a bougainvillea-clad characterful old building. There is a sheltered terrace with dining table, deck chairs and a barbecue, as well as space for two small chairs at the top of the steps up to the front door (or even three with the door open!), all commanding beautiful views, particularly around sunset. Everything is well-maintained and handed over in a cleanly state. There is a communal bar and terrace (again with particularly beautiful views around sunset) close by, a little lower down the hill, with free washing machine and computer access. Evening meals of a very high standard can be ordered, if required, and some items of food and drink (including good local red and white wines) are also available for sale. At the same time there is a friendly little grocery in Pieve, just down the hill, and both medium-sized and large supermarkets only a little farther away. The communal swimming pool is also close by, a little higher up the hill, and is a particular delight, its crystal-clear water maintained by mild salination rather than by chlorine or bromine. The staff members are friendliness and helpfulness personified, and immediately responsive to your every need. The communal spaces provide ample opportunity for friendly conversation with fellow guests from other houses and apartments if you so wish, while the apartment provides privacy if and when you prefer. There is a mass of information available, both written and oral, on local walks and restaurants (some in combination), how to find the local grocery and supermarkets, the homely little town of Camaiore being a joy to have just down the road, as well as on day trips further afield, Lucca luring us back time and time again. Renting this apartment gives you a place to be and relax, as well as a well-situated base for further exploration of northern Tuscany, that we think it would be hard to improve on anywhere in the region, and is therefore great value for money. We had a perfect holiday there in every way and have already recommended it to family and friends.

Peralta is a hillside hamlet situated in the northern part of Tuscany, on the slopes of the Alpi Apuane (national park), 10 min from the market town of Camaiore which, in turn, is 10 min inland from the coast.

Lucca is a 35 min drive to the south.

The A12/A11 autoroute exit is 20 min, making day trips to Siena (2 h), Carrara & its marble mines (45 min) very easy.

You can drive into the Carrara mountains - or go to the beach - the closest is Viareggio, the most popular Forte dei Marmi (35 min or so). The Cinque Terre are one hour away - one can drive to La Spezia or Porto Venere and visit them by boat - the ferry service is frequent.

Shopping in the area (Lucca/Florence/Forte dei Marmi) is legendary! The sculptors' town of Pietrasanta is only 20 min away.

Peralta is Ideally situated for the Puccini Festival (40 min away). Open air opera Festival taking place in July and August at Torre del Lago.

We have a mountain of information and suggestions for our guests, including directions for walks, when and where local markets happen, brocante markets,' must visit' places and restaurants, our favourite mountain drive, etc etc

Peralta feels wonderfully remote and secluded and yet is, in fact, very accessible.

In the daytime, there is always someone on site to help with all inquiries regarding day trips, ferry times, advice on this and that.

Airports: Pisa 45 min, Florence 1 h, Genoa 1 h, 40min - Bologna 2 h.
