Apts & houses in a unique, inspiring location restored by sculptor - Gemelli, sleeping 2

Overview

Property

Updated: 02-Dec-2016
Secluded and peaceful yet with easy access for sightseeing. Panoramic views.

The two apartments described below are part of the beautiful peaceful hamlet of Peralta, located in a spectacular setting in the Tuscan hills that rise high above the valley of Camaiore. With stunning, panoramic views over the valley to the hills and sea beyond and surrounded by terraces of olive groves, its stone walls covered with purple bougainvilleas, lemon trees, jasmine, Peralta seems like paradise, a place for people seeking tranquility and beauty. There is a swimming pool on an upper terrace with a panoramic view towards the sea. The large terrace in front of Peralta is a lovely place to sit with a glass of wine, enjoy the sunsets and meet other guests.

The hamlet was restored with great love and imagination by international sculptor Fiore de Henriquez. She created a place that is quite unique and very inspiring for anyone with creative tendancies. Peralta was Fiore's home up to her death in June 2004, and one can see her work all through the hamlet. Her sculpture everywhere, and the manner in which she restored and designed the hamlet give it very special atmosphere and character.

We are surrounded by lovely walking country with marked trails through the olive groves and hills dense with chestnut trees and known for their wild flowers in spring and autumn. Walks range from 50 minutes to a delightful restaurant in an adjoining village, to three hours up to the peak of the Mount Prana above Peralta.

Peralta offers various self catering accommodation sleeping from 2 to 8 and 4 additional bedrooms with bathrooms. As described more fully further down the page, the whole hamlet sleeps 30 or so and can be booked in its entirety for parties. Many a family party or important birthday has been celebrated here!

A previous guest offered this description of Peralta :

'The atmosphere is relaxed, the staff have a rare quality of being there but conspicuously absent unless needed. This adds to the quietude of the place, giving a feel of personal space and privacy. It has a sense of a well-run hotel, without the formality, and the ambiance of a private villa without the expense. I was fortunate to have cast an eye over a few of the other properties available; all are very well appointed and would not fail to please.

Whether you’re wanting to collect your thoughts, explore the region, write a novel, or paint a masterpiece this has to be the place to visit.'

wonderful holiday - amazing setting, quiet and idyllic, off the beaten track.

  • 4 of 5

this beautiful hamlet is private, quiet and in the most gorgeous setting. the pool is situated on an elevated plateau with a stunning view, plenty of space to sunbathe and relax. the pool is quite small but deep and very refreshing.

the accommodation is as described - rustic and charming, clean and well-maintained, good service was provided.

the approach to the hamlet is a challenge - a very steep and winding road; for the faint-hearted there is small car park and the staff will take you up the last few hairpin bends.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review of your stay at Peralta. We are so pleased that you enjoyed our beautiful hamlet and hope very much you will return one day. We are planning to widen the last bit of the road as much as possible so as to make the access less of a challenge for our guests who have large cars (small cars have no problem). Dinah and Kate

Fabulous 60th birthday weekend

  • 5 of 5

We had 30 friends and family from all over the world join us in September for a big birthday celebration. We had never been to Peralta before so we crossed our fingers and hoped for the best. It all turned out better than we could have dreamed!

We booked out the whole hamlet and were delighted with the accommodation - rustic chic, wonderful views and decorated with gorgeous objets d'art.

We stayed for 3 nights and used a combination of external caterers, internal self catering and also walked out to a wonderful local restaurant for the birthday lunch. Everything was delicious and very professional. And best of all it was easy! Kate (the manager) could not have been more obliging or more helpful.

We would highly recommend Peralta to anyone - but especially for this sort of gathering of friends and family.

Heaven in Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

I first came to Peralta several years ago with my father for a birthday party and have been coming back each summer ever since with my wife, my sister, my friends... That says it all, now I can't imagine spending a summer without going to Peralta. The place is absolutly beautiful, the people are so friendly it feels like family. I surely recommend this place to everybody.

The perfection that is Peralta....

  • 5 of 5

It is almost impossible to categorise or descrbe Peralta in a way that does it justice. Suffice to say that it is probably unlike anywhere else that most of us have ever visited.

The hamlet itself is a higgledy-piggledy collection of small houses & cottages, linked by a network of old paved paths & steps, which seem to have emerged organically ftom the steep Tuscan hill to which they cling. In fact they were rescued from ruin & restored over many years by the world-renowned sculptor, Fiore de Henriques, examples of whose work, both abstract & figurative, can be found all over Peralta's gardens & terraces. She seems to have been the most extraordinary person & it is my great regret that i never met her, though her spirit & persona still seem to pervade the atmosphere of the place.

I recently visited Peralta for a big family party & stayed on for a few (quieter!) days with a friend. We had the Gemelli apartment, a little private part of the main building. It consists of a sitting room with tiny kitchen area, bedroom & shower/loo, simply furnished & wonderfully cool in summer (but probably very cosy in winter with wood-burning stove). Going to sleep to the sound of owls hooting in the nearby woods & waking up to fling open the old green shutters & gaze out over the valley to where Corsica lies far away in the gleaming Mediterranean, are just 2 of the gentle pleasures of Peralta, as well as long wine-filled suppers under the vine pergola, or interesting conversations with fellow guests.

There is plenty to do here - reading, writing, painting, thinking, participating in some of the creative courses which take place during the summer, as well as swimming in the jewel-like pool right at the top of the hamlet (with yet another wonderful view) or being taken for a walk by Ellie, the charming resident dog. She will guide visitors unerringly along the many woodland paths & never fail to bring everyone home again....

However, some of Italy's most beautiful & intetesting small cities, such as Lucca, Siena & Pisa, are a mere 30/40 minutes away by car, & Camaiore, the charming little local town, well worth exploring, is an easy walk down the hill (though perhaps more of a pull up to get back!)

Don't come Peralta for a slick, 'modern' holiday - rather it is more like staying with old friends & indeed the Peralta 'team' will soon begin to feel like friends - Laura the wonderful cook, calm beautiful Kate who seems to deal with everything, Stephen the

beautiful place = Peralta

  • 4 of 5

peralta is a nice quite and special place with beautiful views. Kate organised a magnificent breakfast for my husbands birthday, fresh fruit, yogurt, homemade marmelade, and even a bottle of prosecco! The whole hamlet is very wel maintained and cared for by the people working and living there. Very nice chicken made by Laura!

The regio offers a lot. We were very tired and stayed at peralta a lot. Reading cooking, doing nothing, il dolce far niente. However, we also went to Puccini Festival nearby Viareggio, visited Lucca two times (dinner at Gigi's was very disappointing, Osteria Baralla however delicious) went to the coast for swimming and sunbathing, did a daytour we found at Peralta's.

We felt very much at home.

Thanks again, mille grazie,

Silvana & Huub

Location

From the Owner

Intenrational sculptor Fiore de Henriquez lived in the area of Camaiore due to its proximity to the Carrara marble quarries and the bronze foundries of nearby Pietrasanta. In the 1970's she found the small hamlet of Peralta, perched on the hillside above Camaiore. It was remote, served only by a footpath, and the buildings were mainly in ruins - their inhabitants having left in the mid 1950's due to the hard living in the hills. No water nor electricity at this time. Fiore fell in love with the hamlet and managed to gradually buy the various houses. She then set about restoring them and the hamlet and created the very unique place that exists today. She died in 2004 and the hamlet was then taken over by a very good friend who owns it today. Repairs and renovations are undertaken where necessary, but the essential essence of the hamlet remains the same as when Fiore was alive. It is the home of her archive and sculptures, which can be seen throughout the grounds and in the various accommodation.

Peralta is a hillside hamlet situated in the northern part of Tuscany, on the slopes of the Alpi Apuane (national park), 10 min from the market town of Camaiore which, in turn, is 10 min inland from the coast.

Lucca is a 35 min drive to the south.

The A12/A11 autoroute exit is 20 min, making day trips to Siena (2 h), Carrara & its marble mines (45 min) very easy.

You can drive into the Carrara mountains - or go to the beach - the closest is Viareggio, the most popular Forte dei Marmi (35 min or so). The Cinque Terre are one hour away - one can drive to La Spezia or Porto Venere and visit them by boat - the ferry service is frequent.

Shopping in the area (Lucca/Florence/Forte dei Marmi) is legendary! The sculptors' town of Pietrasanta is only 20 min away.

Peralta is Ideally situated for the Puccini Festival (40 min away). Open air opera Festival taking place in July and August at Torre del Lago.

We have a mountain of information and suggestions for our guests, including directions for walks, when and where local markets happen, brocante markets,' must visit' places and restaurants, our favourite mountain drive, etc etc

Peralta feels wonderfully remote and secluded and yet is, in fact, very accessible.

In the daytime, there is always someone on site to help with all inquiries regarding day trips, ferry times, advice on this and that.

Facilities

From the Owner

It is hard to describe the absolute charm and beauty of Peralta and why I am so passionate about it. I now own it and am as much in love with it as Fiore before me. Every corner has its surprises, small details to delight the eye. The wisterias and bougainvilleas offer vibrant colour and essential shade. The views are wonderful, changing with the light, with the weather, with the season. Sunsets are magic. Early morning mist lying in the valley. The sight of Corsica on a clear day. The large bronze sculpture of 'The Phoenix' on the main terrace about to fly off over the valley. Fiore used to say it signifies 'Peralta rising from the ashes'. The many sculptures Fiore left for visitors to enjoy on the terraces. Her private gallery which I love to show to guests and one evening a week, at aperitivo time, I invite any guests staying at Peralta to a viewing of the gallery and Fiore's original house I hope many visitors will find their way to Peralta and enjoy it as much I do ......... possibly even fall in love with it!
