About Sigrid

Several years ago my husband and I discovered the un spoilt beauty of the rugged coastline of Sussex and Kent - so far largely undisturbed by the city developers.

We were immediately drawn to the area and back in early 2006 bought a dilapidated ruin, the Officers House in Rye Harbour. 2 years later this Georgian house was fully restored to its former beauty, much of it unchanged from the day it was built. A year later we started our next project, a more modest house in the same village but arguably more charming - SeaKale, an old shrimper’s cottage a few metres from the nature reserve (this house is now sold). Drawing from my many years as a fashion stylist in Hollywood, and my husbands very English sense of great style (his words!) we have created a house that we would want to live in ourselves.

Sigrid purchased this house in 2006

Why Sigrid chose Romney Marsh

Several years ago my husband and I discovered the un spoilt beauty of the rugged coastline of Sussex and Kent - so far largely undisturbed by the city developers.

Harry and I were immediately drawn to the area and back in early 2006 bought a dilapidated ruin, the Officers House in Rye Harbour. 2 years later this Georgian house has been restored by us to its former beauty, much of it unchanged from the day it was built.

A year later we started our next project, a more modest house in the same village but arguably more charming - SeaKale, an old shrimper’s cottage a few metres from the nature reserve (this house is now sold).

More recently we purchased a hotel now renamed The Gallivant, a boutique luxury Restaurant With Rooms in Camber that has won many accolades and is only a 10 minutes drive from the house.

What makes this house unique

The house sits amongst some of the most beautiful countryside in the country. Enormous sand and shingle beaches blend into over the top Victorian designed towns literally perched on the shoreline. Towards Rye and Dungeness the enormous shingle and sand beaches really dominate the landscape.

Communities of artists mix with a more recent influx of windsurfers and kite surfers who are called to the challenge of the seas all the year round. Amongst the dunes lie some famous golf courses that have been the ruin of many a fine handicap. We love the area all the year round, particularly the wildness of the late autumn and early spring where walking along the beach is about the most perfect antidote to the stresses and strains of modern city life.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Many thanks for all your assistance in helping to ensure my weekend away was a success. I sincerely had a wonderful time and would like to personally thank you for all your help. Liam and family

We absolutely loved the beautiful house and garden! The birdsong was a great tonic coming down from London...and we loved walking in the nature reserve, it was really uplifting to the soul. I think the only thing we struggled with was leaving by 10am. You are lucky to have found such a fabulous property and have really made so much from it. Adrienne and family

Such a comfortable and elegant house. Beautifully decorated, we were impressed by the standard you've done everything to. We had a most enjoyable time with great walks and look forward to coming again. Dee and family

Lovely house in a great location

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely, relaxed 3 days at the Officer’s House. It was immaculately presented and provided everything we needed and more.

We also loved the location, so close to the very nice William the Conqueror pub and great walks and only a very short drive to the beautiful town of Rye.

Our only small quibble was that we would have liked locks on all the toilets. However, this is really the only negative thing we could think of.

So, thank you very much for letting us stay in your lovely, spacious house and we look forward to returning in the future.

Owner's Response: Thank you again for choosing us and we would be delighted to welcome you and your family back, we appreciate your kind feedback. We had a incident a few years back with a child locking themselves in the loo, so we decided to remove the locks and create hanging signs system on the door knob so to remove the issue instead. We hope you will come a visit again soon! Kind regards, Sigrid Cragoe OneLifeEscapes

Excellent Christmas break.

  • 4 of 5

The house is well-designed and very well-appointed. Comfortable furniture, plenty of kitchen utensils, knives, forks, glasses, etc. TV and sound system working well. Hot water, efficient plumbing.

Only disappointment was the location - our fault that we did not realise that Rye Harbour is nearly a mile from the nearest sea, but the Square in which the house is situated is pretty grim (perhaps worse in winter than it would be in summer) and there is nothing attractive when you look out of the windows.

Excellent village shop, friendly, well-stocked and very clean, and a great pub round the corner at The William the conqueror.
