The farmhouse is over 400 years old with oak beams, tiled floors and large open wood fireplaces but has been updated to include electric radiators and a modern kitchen plus new .......a modern power shower bathroom and new seperate WC room.The landscaped garden is beautiful with over 50 types of tree, flowers and bushes, with a large fishpond, narrow river and a Private 5.5 metre wide circular pool. A short walk will take you into the village of Cabariot where you can find a bar, restaurant, food shop, post office and bakery. The town of Rochefort is 8km away with superb outdoor markets 3 times a week, fascinating Naval museums and elegant Cafes and restaurants serving freshly caught,local seafood. 90% of France's oysters are caught in this area. The sandy beaches are a 15 minute drive from the home, and excellent Golf courses can be found in Saintes/ Niort. Just to the south you can visit Royan by the sea or sample the wonderful Bordeaux's in St Emillion or a tour of Martell/Hennessy in Cognac. Cycles are provided and there are boat trips nearby.

We wanted somewhere in rural France, far enough south so that the weather is great, but not to far to drive or fly. The Charente region was our first choice...a mixture of wonderful French vineyards to visit and Bordeaux wines to taste with superb sandy accessible beaches and of course fresh seafood.
If you want total peace and quiet and seclusion away from the 'rat race' then this home allows you to sit by the pool or sit on the patio with a glass of wine and read a book as it is so quiet. You wont be interrupted.
If you want to visit wonderful beaches nearby and/or play golf/visit vineyards then equally this home allows you to drive a short distance or cycle, and enjoy the uncongested country roads.

We enjoyed 10 days at La Folie at the beginning of August 2015. The farmhouse enjoys a secluded location with a large, well equipped private garden where we particularly enjoyed lazy days sunbathing, dipping in the pool to cool off, eating, drinking and warming up in the jacuzzi when the evenings were a little more chilly. The tiki bar with lighting and heaters was a big hit in the evenings for enjoying a drink and playing cards.The local boulangerie (which we cycled to!) was very friendly and Tornay Charente is only 10 minutes drive away with a massive Super U. The nearest beaches are less than a 20minute drive away, although we drove to the Cote Savage a few times to find the surf which is about an hours drive. The Thursday market at Rochefort is well worth a visit, with fantastic local produce and seafood. The farmhouse is well equipped, and obviously a much loved second family home which reflects the owner's personal taste, definitely not a bland generic holiday house! We became very fond of the donkey next door who we christened Didier! Graham was helpful and friendly to deal with.
We stayed at the farmhouse for 10 days from 23 August 2015. We were a group of 2 adults and 4 children aged from 17 to 9. The property was as described on the website. All the arrangements with Graham were very easy and he was very willing to answer any questions that we had. He also called just before we departed to make sure that the property was set up as we wanted it.
On arrival the property was clean and there was a small welcome pack of provisions. There are two large bedrooms upstairs, which were set up with two beds in each for us and a double bedroom downstairs with doors opening up to the garden. The bathroom and separate loo are also downstairs.The kitchen is very well appointed with everything you need for self catering. The large garden is private with a pool, gazebo and jacuzzi. There were bicycles in the shed together with a badminton set and other children's toys.
We all really enjoyed our stay at the farmhouse and actually spent more time there than we expected as it was ideal for a mixed group such as ours.
It is a charming property set in beautiful and peaceful countryside with easy access to a village either on foot or bicycle. A short drive away is an excellent supermarket and I would recommend the artisan bakery next to the supermarket for bread & croissants etc. (The village bakery was closed during our stay).
Within 20 minutes drive are excellent coast side locations and beaches.
A thoroughly enjoyable family holiday in this charming French farmhouse. Plenty of space for all of us. Well, equipped, comfortable, clean and well maintained. Excellent guest manual and customer service. A perfect base to explore this beautiful part of France with it's lovely restaurants, local markets and stunning scenery. Highly recommended.
Large farmhouse with lots of character. Plenty of space with big lounge, dining room and kitchen big enough to eat in. Three large bedrooms (two doubles and a twin). Outside there's a large garden with a round pool, outdoor jacuzzi and a gazebo which was another place to eat. We took teenagers who like their own space and there was plenty of that for them, so they were happy, especially as there was wifi.
Weird changes of level all over the place. Made it an interesting house but not so good if you're unstable and we all fell down steps or tripped over rises at some point during the week.
Nice new bathroom with unusual shower, although not the water pressure to get the best from the horizontal jets.
The jacuzzi was great and got a lot of use. The pool was a bit of a faff to keep topping up and testing the PH - probably wouldn't mind so much if we'd actually used it, but we didn't as the water was cold, even in August, so we stuck to the jacuzzi.
La Folie is a group of three or four dwellings and feels like it's out in the sticks although it's not - a big superU is only ten minutes away, so you get the best of both worlds. Could have done without the donkey next door which sounded like it was being murdered at random times during the day and night and scared the life out of everybody.
Nice countryside for riding bikes through. The property comes with bikes although they need a bit of tlc and, if you want to go more than a couple of miles you'd be better taking your own.
Easy striking distance of La Rochelle and very near to Rochefort, which is a nice little town. Good beaches within easy reach.
