Apartment in Flayosc, Provence, France - Peaceful Location close To Lovely Provencal Village

Situated half-way between St Tropez and the Gorges du Verdon this cosy, well-equipped apartment attached to a recently built villa on an enclosed olive grove offers peace and tranquillity whilst being only 15 minutes walk away from the centre of the lively, typically Provencal village of Flayosc. The apartment offers every modern convenience: oven, hob, dishwasher, fridge, freezer, microwave, TV (BBC, ITV, French channels), DVD and hi-fi, washing/drying facilities. It is electrically heated, has a log burner for cosy Winter evenings and air-conditioning for the Summer. The private terrace and garden area looks over olive groves and is equipped with barbecue and garden furniture. The 10 x 5m tiled and heated pool is shared with the resident English owners. Flayosc is a superb base for a wonderful holiday: relax in the sunshine, walk or cycle in the beautiful countryside, visit the coast, the mountains or the colourful Provencal markets.

Notes on accommodation: The apartment is equipped for holidays all year round. Air-conditioning is provided for summer use and electric heating and log burning stove for winter stays. The property is suitable for couples only or a couple with a small child. However a second, completely independent bedroom with shower room and separate wc is available at a supplement should two couples wish to holiday together - please note this bedroom may not be rented separately from the apartment and is not suitable for children. Please see further photographs of the additional bedroom and en-suite shower room. Outside: The apartment's private terrace and garden area looks over vineyards and olive groves and is equipped with barbecue and garden furniture. The 10 x 5m heated pool is shared with the resident English owners. The apartment and its garden are set within a one acre olive grove with approximately 70 olive trees producing over 100 litres of premium olive oil per year - your welcome basket includes Les Oliviers olive oil and also organic eggs. Utility Room: The utility room is to be found under the villa and contains washing machine and tumble dryer as well as additional freezer space if required. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels (including pool towels) and bedlinen are provided free of charge and are changed weekly. Guests are expected to leave the property as they find it - a cleaning service if required is provided at a £20 charge.

A superb, well equipped apartment in the idyllic Provençal countryside

We stayed with Judith and Keith for 7 nights and felt lucky to have discovered this little gem. The apartment was very comfortable, with everything you could think of to hand. There was no shortage of glasses, cooking equipment, coffee machine even a juicer which made us feel relaxed and able to make what ever we wanted. We also need to mention how comfortable the bed was. Crisp white linen and a firm bed meant we slept like babies, waking up to the glorious sound of the birds and the sunshine!

We arrived at approx 7pm to find a very warm welcome and a fridge full of local wine, milk, water, orange juice, eggs, mustard and fresh bread and croissants for the following morning. Judith and Keith have been hosting for a long time and the attention to detail shows. The apartment itself is perfect for two people with different areas for alfresco dining, lounging on the patio or chilling beside the beautiful pool area next to the outdoor kitchen. Wherever we positioned ourselves the views across Judith and Keith’s 70 olive trees were stunning!

The area of Flayosc is beautiful with stunning walks through the vineyards, and a village where you can buy everything you need including the delicious local cooperative wine. It is a great base for exploring other villages, the lake and the mountains. It’s just over a 1 hour drive from Nice airport so you get the benefit of being away from it all without having to commit to hours and hours of driving. With the help of Judith and her knowledge of the area we have already booked to return with our family next summer for 4 weeks in a local villa. We can’t wait!

A wonderful piece of laid-back, back-country Provence!

As other reviewers have all said, Judith and Keith are wonderful hosts, and they have created a treasure of a cottage that is perfect for a couple wanting a retreat in rural France.

The apartment is small but has everything anyone could want for even a long stay: all the basic necessities are there, but also everything else one could want (from candles and matches to portable table and chairs perfect for picnics on the road). The bed is good, the shower fine, and the kitchen was so well-stocked that we didn't need to go to the store for the first 36 hours.

Better than the apartment, though, is the site. The pool area is beautiful, open to the sky and countryside, and equipped with deliciously comfortable pool beds and heated water. The apartment's private terrace is also lovely, truly private, and well-equipped. All the photos and lists on the website are accurate, so please review them closely to see what Judith and Keith offer.

And we loved Flayosc. As Judith says, it is a "shabby" Provencal village, but that is what we loved about it. As genuine a perched village as its more famous sisters, it offers four excellent restaurants, several cafes, a lovely Monday market, a spectacular traiteur specializing in fresh pasta, and everything else one could wish for-- without the postcards, tourists, souvenir shops, and crowds. Real people live here along with some expats, which is precisely what we were looking for.

We loved staying here, but a few reservations keep me from giving the apartment five stars. One is the number of steps (without railings) necessary to reach the private terrace and pool area. Another is that the "15-minute" walk to town is a long 15 minutes with some uphill stretches, which made us resort to using the car after trying the walk twice. And the third is that there is a touch of the unfinished construction site about the house. Workers, debris, empty containers and pool equipment lying about, untrimmed shrubbery and dead summer plantings that have not been cleared, the residue of summer outdoor living, and the mess that goes along with two large dogs keep it from being as perfect a retreat as it could be. We came at the end of the season, and I know the hosts have plans for continued improvements, so I would not hesitate to return earlier in the season when the outdoor space looks like the photos (while the pool and garden are still being maintained) and once the step railings and other construction projects are finished.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for this great review and for booking Les Oliviers. We are delighted that you enjoyed Flayosc which is just as provençal as a village can be. Just to respond to your reservations: we have been waiting for our blacksmith to provide the rails for some time - this is Provence after all!! The garden is always maintained. However, you arrived at the end of a very hot season - in fact you enjoyed summer temperatures whilst you were here in early autumn - and we have not had any rain since early May. Everywhere is brown and untidy looking but we do not want to do a big clean up until the temperatures cool down a little and so avoid over-stressing plants that are already hanging on for dear life. It is worth mentioning that any construction projects at Les Oliviers are only undertaken during the winter when we do not have any guests. We would also want to point out that our 'two large dogs' are choccy labs just in case anyone reading this might think that they are less gentle breeds. We hope to see you again at any time of the year you wish to come - every month of the year is great here in paradise!!

A real gem

We thoroughly enjoyed our two week stay in Judith & Keith's apartment. It was ideally situated for trips to St. Tropez, to the many pretty, local villages - including Lorgues, Toutour and Villacroix, and only an hour from Lac Du St Croix. The 'Train des Pignes' cycle route is nearby, but not recommended in 34 degree heat! The pool area was stunning and very much appreciated due to the 30+ temperatures throughout our stay. Judith & Keith were very welcoming and willingly shared their knowledge of the area - including tips on local restaurants and places to visit. The apartment was well equipped, with many extras including excellent air-conditioning. A very generous welcome pack was provided on our arrival. We were able to completely relax and spent many hours by the pool or on our patio after our explorations of the area.

We found that nothing was too much trouble for our hosts, and we would certainly recommend a stay at Les Oliviers to recharge your batteries.

Marvelous stay in the Var

The apartment at Les Oliviers is well equipped and quite spacious for a couple. The grounds are immaculate and the pool was a welcome respite after a long day of sightseeing. Judith is a first rate host. Her "welcome package" of essentials was very thoughtful and made it easy to settle in after a long drive. She gave us great recommendations of places to visit and restaurants to sample. Her knowledge of the area was invaluable.

If our travels take us back to the region we will most certainly stay with Judith and Keith.

A very pleasant stay at this time of year in a well appointed property with very friendly and helpful owners. idyll for a couple in an area of Provence that doesn't appear to be too touristic but with very good facilities ( restaurants , markets , places to visit far and near)

Special interest holidays:

Less than an hour from Grand Canyon du Verdon, the Verdon river has created a series of gorges, the Verdon flows south into the turquoise waters of the Lac de Ste-Croix. For the daring - rock climbing, whitewater rafting and hiking. Electric boats and windsurfing boards can be hired here. Palais des Papes in Avignon the magnificent Papal Palace. Aix en Provence - with fascinating museums and historic buildings - great shops too! Monte Carlo - take the train from Draguignan-Les Arcs station and visit for a day - the Riviera's most dazzling example of 19th century grandeur. Lots of great vineyards to visit. Cannes Film Festival in May. Monaco Grand Prix in May. Abbaye du Thoronet, Le Thoronet - about 20 minutes from the Villa. 12th century Cistercian abbey. Tourtour village - 40 minutes from the Villa with great restaurants - La Table visited by Gordon Ramsey - wonderful food. Tourtour is perched 600m up and surrounded by a pine forest. Medieval buildings and old stone streets.


Les Oliviers is easily accessed by air (Nice 90 kms, Toulon 79 kms and also Marseille), TGV train (Les Arcs-Draguignan - 15kms) and by road (Junction 36 at Le Muy, A8). Car hire is advisable if you wish to take advantage of all of the wonderful villages, the Gorge du Verdon and the coast. However, the village with a huge variety of shops and services is only 15 minutes by foot from Les Oliviers so visitors may be self sufficient without transport.


The lovely village of Tourtour is 13 kms drive. Les Arcs with its lovely medieval quarter is 15 kms. The fantastic Gorge du Verdon is less than one hour away. Avignon and its famous bridge is a 2 hour drive.

Further Details:

The village is well equipped with 2 small supermarkets, fresh fish shop, butcher, delicatessen, 2 bakers, chemist, 3 doctors, a dentist, bank, post office, book and gift shops, 4 bars which all serve food and (at last count) 8 restaurants! A famous truffle restaurant is to be found in a nearby village only 15 minutes' drive away.

Booking Notes:
Weekly rates throughout the year include welcome pack, linen, towels and all water, electricity and electric heating/air con and heated pool (01/05 - 30/09). There will be no further charges. Long lets (3 or more weeks) during the winter are available by negotiation. Weekend lets are according to availability. A returnable damage/cleaning deposit of 100€ is payable with the balance 8 weeks before the holiday begins. Payment is accepted in Euros. We regret we are unable to accept animals.

Changeover Day:
Changeover days are flexible allowing guests to take advantage of low cost mid-week air fares. Arrival times should be after 16H00 and departure before 10H00.

Notes on prices:
Rental prices include all costs including air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter. The mosaic swimming pool is heated from 1st May until the end of September at no extra cost to our guests - to heat outside of this period there is a 50€ pw supplement. All linen, including pool towels is provided. A substantial welcome basket is provided (wine, English tea, French coffee, bread, eggs etc) ensuring that our guests can relax on arrival.
