Traditional Medieval Farmhouse with pool, peaceful rural views and churches

Updated: 27-Sep-2015
Traditional Farmhouse in Santa Lucija, Gozo, Malta - Peaceful Location, Good For Walks And Ten Minutes By Car To A Nearest Beach

A perfect retreat in the peaceful and well-kept village of Santa Lucija, with rural views over the unspoilt island of Gozo. The landscape is stunning: picturesque hilltop villages and a rugged Mediterranean coastline with blue lagoons, stalactite and stalagmite caves and stunning rock formations. Gozo is home to the World Heritage site, Ggantija Temple, the oldest known stone building in the world. A medieval stone farmhouse built around a courtyard, Stella Mares includes a vaulted mill room, an arched study and a modernised limestone-and-marble kitchen. The outdoor area - with a swimming pool, dining terrace, barbecue, small garden and lounging area - is enclosed by a traditional Gozitan dry-stone wall, which backs on to fields. There is a tower off the main building with gorgeous views over the island from both the bedroom and the bathroom. Stella Mares sleeps 9-10 and is ideal for a family or two.

From the Owner

The house is in a traditional Gozitan village with views across the valley to the hills of Gozo and the Citadel. It is quiet and we have lived on Gozo as a family during the school holidays from when the children were young. My youngest son was born on Gozo and is now 24.

Activity and Interests

Any beach is ten to fifteen minutes by car and you can rent bicycles or motorbikes in Victoria the capital which is five minutes drive from the house.

The nearest airport is Luqa in Malta and the taxi ride from the airport to the Gozo ferry is approx 45 minutes. There is a seaplane service from the airport to Gozo. All ferry times cane be found on the website Gozo Channel and the seaplane service can be found on the Malta Tourist website. You can book a taxi in advance to take you to Gozo or rent a car from the reliable car rentals companies at the airport.

Further Details:

Gozo has an extraordinary rich history and it is well worth visiting the Citadel in Victoria as well and visiting the Archaeological Museum, The Prison and walking along the Citadel ramparts. Xaghra is the custodian of the World Heritage Site, Ggantija, the oldest stone building in the world. Scuba diving is spectacular and there are several good dive companies, notably St Andrews in Xlendi and Moby Dives in Xlendi. The Salt Pans in Marsalforn and Dwejra near San Lawrence are a special place for walking and photographers and catching the sunset in the early evening. It's worth taking a boat trip around the island, several companies leave from the harbour in Mgarr. Churches are everywhere and worth visiting - notably Ta'Pinu, the Lourdes of Gozo, which the Pope recently visited. La Grotta in Xlendi is a favourite for the nightclubbers and is set in an underground cave; it is open on weekends.

  • Notes on accommodation: As this is an old house with wooden furniture and old beams it is a no-smoking house so any smokers please use the garden or courtyard. All pets welcome and you may find that you have adopted some cats or kittens during your stay! Outside: The pool (26ft by 19ft) is a clear green colour and the surrounding area is paved with local Gozitan marble so is slippery when very wet. Too much sunlotion and oil can make the pool murky. There are four deckchairs and lilos and children's toys under the stairs in the courtyard for the pool. There is underwater lighting for the pool at night. The pool is cleaned and serviced twice a week. There is a wooden table for outside eating with chairs, a barbecue, and power sockets for additional lighting and iPods/music. There are hammocks in the garden and the entrance courtyard. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: There is weekly maid service. Additional cleaning can sorted out directly. Any babysitting can be arranged with the housekeeper. The swimming pool is cleaned twice weekly from June to September. Other: A study with Wi-Fi broadband, a Maltese day bed, glass bookshelves and books, desk, double doors to garden and sitting area.
