Cottage in Bentwitchen, Nr. Barnstaple, North Devon, England - Rural Setting in Exmoor National Park

Part of a recent barn conversion, the cottage has wooden floors, stone walls and exposed oak beams. The upside down accommodation is designed so that the open plan sitting, dining and kitchen areas offer enhanced views of the surrounding countryside. Downstairs there are 3 double en-suite bedrooms. The smallest bedroom has its own dressing room, which can double as a child's bedroom. Outside the cottage has a patio area overlooking a wooded valley and gorse clad hillside. The North Devon area is one of outstanding natural beauty. Exmoor has beautiful scenery, prehistoric sites, old churches, interesting walks and wildlife. Croyde and Saunton are fine surfing beaches. Tarr Steps, the Tarka Trail, the Valley of Rocks, Clovelly, Marwood and Rosemoor Gardens are within easy reach. Barnstaple, with its famous pannier market, offers a range of shopping facilities and activities. South Molton, the nearest town has a market on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Thank you so much for letting us stay at the cottage over Christmas. The cottage, the Christmas Tree and decorations were perfect. The log burner was lovely, especially as it was -3 some days - so cosy and comfy we didn't want to leave. The cottage was so well equipped; we had everything we needed and more. Absolutely beautiful

We have now been to bentwitchen 4 times and we never tire of it. The cottage is beautifully designed, spacious, cosy and has everything you could ever want from a holiday cottage. We never want to leave and always look forward to our next holiday at bentwitchen!

The surrounding countryside is beautiful, with nice walks and not too far from the coast. We have visited quite a few places around the coast and the drive is just wonderful. South Molton isn’t too far where you can get any supplies you need like butchers, fruit and veg, newspapers etc.

Jenny and David the owners are lovely people, and have always been so welcoming and warm. Nothing is too much trouble for them and they really make us feel at home.

We are so pleased we found this amazing holiday home and cannot recommend it enough!

Rural retreat, not too far from the coast

Lovely cottage, well designed open plan living space. Warm welcome from owners Jenny and David with some thoughtful touches and helpful information. It's perfect for a rural retreat but not too far to the coast and North Devon towns. We did both on our week with our grown up family and will visit again, the cottage is tucked away but easy to locate thanks to Jenny's clear and accurate directions. There are pubs and restaurants within a short drive, but with an aga cooking supper while we were at the beach all day we didn't need to eat out

I rarely write these things and one of the reasons is because I travel so much that I would spend half my life on sites like this reviewing the different hotels and houses I stay in.

I felt compelled to write about this place though. From the moment you arrive, you know you have chosen somewhere magical. Just the views over the valley were enough to bowl me over. Then you walk into a converted barn that has been constructed and furnished with the love and care that you would put into your own home. I was with my girlfriend and her family and we were all totally bowled over. So much so, that we stayed in every night, simply because the house is so atmospheric. We put on the fire, had dinners around the huge dinner table, sat around playing the guitar ( the family put their ear plugs in at the moment I started singing) and just lazed around the lovely open planned room on the first floor, which incorporates the dining room, kitchen and sitting room...simply wonderful.

As for the day, well the garden furniture is strategically placed to maximise the enjoyment of the view or you can walk down to the river below. What you will hear is total silence and the sounds of nature...exactly what I was looking for.

This is something special and Jenny and David, who were very welcoming, should be very proud.

A wonderful place to stay!

We recently stayed at this beautiful cottage & had a amazing week. It was our first experience of staying in a barn conversion & I have to say we will be saving to come back again! The cottage had everything we needed & more! Every last detail had been thought out from books & games to shower gels & towels provided. The argon in the kitchen was fantastic. we not only cooked with it but, even though there was an outdoor washing line, we put a towel rail in the middle of the kitchen & it dried our clothes/towels on rainy days! There was a washing machine, tv & dvd player, dishwasher & the family bathroom was fantastic! Facilities were very good & the children loved the fact that they each had their own toilet & shower! I have an autistic son who loved the cottage & the surrounding view's that it has. He was curious about every little part of the cottage & all of the local places we visited as were we. I would recommend this cottage to anyone wanting to experience a stay in a beautiful Barn conversion. The owners, were friendly & very helpful. They showed us round when we arrived, then left us to settle in but made sure we knew were to find them if we needed anything. The accomodation was clean, tidy & had plenty of space for us all! In the evening the cottage became a little cooler but the argon & the wonderful log burner made up for it. We were actually quite said when it came to going home!

Booking Notes:
We charge 70% of the weekly rate for any number of nights up to 4, 80% for 5 and so on.
For bookings more than 8 weeks away a 25% deposit is payable to confirm the booking with balance payable 8 weeks before arrival. If the letting is less than 8 weeks away, full payment is required. Bookings are confirmed in writing upon receipt of the completed booking form and cleared funds. A security deposit of £100 is also charged to cover damage, including accidental damage or excessive cleaning. This is payable on top of the cottage rental and refunded at the end of the stay.

Changeover Day:
Changeover day Saturday with arrival after 4pm. Departure by 10am. Flexible changeover days considered out of season.

Owner's Cancellation Policy

  • 50% refund for cancellations more than 7 days before check-in date.
  • 100% refund for cancellations more than 14 days before check-in date.

Outside: Outside patio area with 6 chairs, a table and Lytchens bench. A free standing barbecue is also available. Shared garden - use of main lawn with steps and stile down to bottom field and stream. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen and towels included but beach towels not provided. Linen and towels changed each week. Property cleaned each changeover day. Cleaning materials provided for guests to use during their stay.
