Le Moulin du Meunier is an 18th century mill, situated on the Vidourle river in the village of Rauret, Orthoux-Sérignac-Quilhan in the Gard, France. It is approximately 30 minutes by car from the Roman city of Nîmes and approximately 45 minutes from the sophisticated southern city of Montpellier, both of which have international transport connections through their airports (Nîmes and Montpellier) and TGV stations. The mill is about one hour away from the Cévennes and about 40 minutes away from the Mediterranean.
The mill, which is literally on the banks of the river, is in a private park and is peaceful – the sound of rushing water will accompany your stay here. Water courses underneath the mill and there is a weir from which you can fish for trout & go canoeing. The nearest shops are approximately 4km from Rauret in the small town of Quissac. High-Speed WiFi is provided throughout the property.
About the owners:
We have lived in continental Europe since 1991 although we are both British. We currently live near Brussels and have 2 children. We both work. We are often in residence in the mas which is just across the park from the mill.
Unique benefits of the property:
The 18th century, atmospheric mill is for rent all year round and the response of tenants to date has been ecstatic, one describing their stay as "a corner of paradise". Set in a large private park, right on the Vidourle river, the mill was recently highlighted in Midi-Libre as a sight to see and "magnificently renovated". You can fish, swim, canoe (provided), walk and cycle in the beautiful countryside. This is the place to come if you want to recharge your batteries.
Steven Maisel purchased this farmhouse in 2009
We have owned property in the Gard for 18 years and recently sold a modern villa when we were lucky enough to find a traditional farm house and separate mill, set in their own grounds on the banks of the river Vidourle, amongst the vineyards. It is peaceful and beautiful.
There are good restaurants locally and the mill is well situated to visit tourist sites : Pont du Gard, the Camargue, the Cevennes, Nimes, Montpellier and the beach are all close.
Although the mill is in a completely rural environment, the large village of Quissac is just two kilometres away and boasts butchers, bakers, a tabac which stocks English newspapers, numerous hairdressers etc. The bustling town of Sommieres is a 15 minute drive - the Saturday morning market is a magnet for visitors and locals alike.
The mill enjoys open fireplaces and high ceilings and has uninterrupted views of the river from the living room and one bedroom. Other windows look out over the park. This is a unique property with bags of charm and romanticism.
The kitchen includes a dishwasher, microwave, hob and brand new fridge/freezer and washing machine.
There is a separate loo and bathroom with bath/shower and sink.
Our visitors have caught fish from the weir which is adjacent to the mill - perch and trout, among others.
There is plenty of shade for the hot months, since there are many mature trees around the mill. Our visitors enjoy barbecuing throughout the year.
Another feature is the mill workings underneath the building with the original millstones, wheels and fixtures as the river runs through.
"A corner of paradise"
The mill is magnificently restored (Midi Libre) which picked out the property as one of the sights to be seen on the river Vidourle.
2 unforgettable weeks of holiday. A magnificent mill, a river a few metres away to swim in, fish to catch, a canoe to take to the river in, the tranquillity, the sun, the crickets, what luck for all future holiday makers!
Very enjoyable stay, a pleasure to be woken by the sound of running water. A magnificent setting. Ideal place to relax, away from it all. Everything is very well kept. Landlord very welcoming.
A beautiful 18th century mill in a fairly remote but attractive area. The quietest location we have ever stayed at and with 2 separate bedrooms, a beautiful relaxing sitting room and a very large kitchen which was fully equipped - everything was provided. From each window there were wonderful views of either the winding river or farm land belonging to the owner and whether it was kingfishers, herons, carp, trout or pike there was always something to watch. 2 kayaks are provided for guests use. The Mill is kept to a very high standard and a fairly large deposit is requested beforehand in case of damages. This is normally by cheque which is not banked and is destroyed at the end of the holiday. Numerous medieval towns are within 45 minutes drive as is the Mediterranean coast and the surrounding area is a delight to drive around and explore. We were warmly welcomed by the owner who mentioned various places of interest and factual history of the Mill. We certainly hope to return.
The old mill house is full of character with lots of charming old features. The beds are very comfortable and it has a decent, large shower. The owner Stephen was very welcoming.
The immediate surroundings are very tranquil with lots of space to run around or relax and it's great being so close to the river watching all the fish and wildlife. The boys enjoyed using the kayaks and swimming in the river.
The mill is well positioned for some of the interesting towns and villages nearby. We particularly enjoyed the local bull festivities and exploring the old towns and restaurants of Sommieres, Nimes and Aigues Mortes.
From your very first view of the Mill as you cross the little bridge this property oozes charm & style. Set at the end of a cypress lined driveway, within a large meadow & next to the river Vidourle, the Mill keeps getting better & better the closer you get.
The interior of the Mill is clean, very well maintained & tastefully decorated in a relaxed french country style, we immediately felt at home. Steven, (the owner) we found to be very charming and helpful without being at all intrusive and, as he lives only across the meadow, easily accessible if we had any questions.
We visited in October and did find the Mill chilly in the evenings, however, heating is available if required or you could do what we did and make use of the plentiful supply of wood and have a fire each evening, very cosy! The kitchen is beautifully laid out and has all the equipment you could possibly need and as for the bathroom.... we didn't want to leave it! Although we didn't make use of them, kayaks are also available if you feel like exploring along the river.
We spent our time there relaxing (easy) and exploring the local towns and villages (beautiful), we would particularly recommend a visit to Sommieres on market day.
In summary, if you want to party party this isn't the property for you, however, if you want to escape from it all in a charming property in beautiful surroundings then this is definitely the place to do so. The only people who would have difficulty are wheelchair users as there are a number of steps to get into the Mill and also a couple inside.
Our only regret is that we only got to spend a week there, however, this is something we hope to remedy as soon as we can
After searching so many properties we settled on the Mill for a week out of season stay and what a great base it was.
We travelled to so many places all of which were no more than an hour and half away either way, Sommieres, Soave, Uzes, St Guilhem-le-desert (our favourite) are all fantastic historic villages and a must see. The airport was about 40 minutes drive. The accomodation was very comfortable, full of character and had everything we needed. Very comfortable master bed which even my husband fitted into well (being 6ft 4!) The Kitchen is very well equipped and there were plenty of games to keep us entertained in the evenings, along with the TV (french only) and DVD's. You can easily plug your own tablet etc (i had a kindle fire) into the tv via the HDMI lead too. There were two canoes available for use (free) which sadly we did not have the opportunity to use, but maybe next time! I would highly recommend this property even out of season, as there is a real log fire in the living room which you can use (don't forget the wood next time Steven!) which was lovely. It is a very quiet area and all you can hear is the river. We met Steven on our last day and was presented with a bottle of their homemade grape juice off their own vines. What a lovely touch, sadly, we did not manage to drink it all but what we had was very delicious indeed. Look forward to visiting again when we decide to return to this region of France.
I stayed at the mill with my husband and two children (aged 4 and 7) for a week in August. We had a wonderful stay. We received a warm welcome from the owner Steven who had stocked the fridge for us so we had food to eat on arrival and things for breakfast, which was very much appreciated. The Mill was spotlessly clean and full of character, our kids particularly enjoyed the lovely selection of books. There are also two canoes for guests to use, which our kids loved. The river is full of fish and we spotted a number of kingfishers. The owner Steven was on hand for advice but did not intrude on our stay, which was great. The location is great to explore the area with many attractions less than an hour away. We particularly enjoyed the arena in Nimes, swimming at Pont du Gard, the steam train in Anduze and Uzes. There is plenty to see and do in the area and the Mill is a great place to stay, we hope to return one day!
Great house in a lovely place. Description was accurate and everything worked.
