Phil and Glyn bought a beautiful charentaise farmhouse in 2003, clinching the deal on the same day England won the rugby world cup in Australia! For 5 years this has been our maison secondaire (holiday home) or 'bolt hole'! Phil was a successful Headteacher of a large special school in Dorset for 16 years, after a teaching career which began in Coventry and Warwickshire. Phil was awarded the CBE in 2008 for services to special education. Glyn played the role of home maker for our 3 lovely children (Sam, Rebecca and Kate) whilst (also) working as a childminder, hospital receptionist and teaching assistant in schools. We moved to Puddletown (Dorset) in 1993 from Kenilworth (Warwickshire) due to Phil's new job. From 1989 to 2007 we built, established and managed Cote Holiday Cottages.
PHIL SILVESTER CBE purchased this cottage in 2003
We have always loved France and (particularly) the south west of France. We have taken one or two holidays a year in France for almost 30 years and we always intended to buy a holiday home here. We chose the Charente maritime because it remains 'la vrai France' and it has a superb climate. The Charente maritime is the second sunniest area of France, after the Mediterranean.
The Charente has everything - beautiful villages, historic towns and cities (Cognac, Saintes, Angouleme, Pons and La Rochelle), picturesque countryside (vines and sunflowers aplenty!) - a majestic river and beautiful beaches. Moreover this region is unspoilt and easily accessible by car, train or plane (regional airports at Angouleme, La Rochelle and Bordeaux with Poitiers and Limoges a little further away).
We are ten minutes' drive from Cognac and Pons, twenty minutes from Saintes and an easy half an hour drive from the coast. We are in the middle of the 'golden triangle' of Cognac - Pons - Saintes in the Petite Champagne, the heart of the cognac producing countryside.
We enjoyed running holiday homes in the UK for ten years before emigrating to France in 2008. We had always planned to give up our 'day jobs' in schools to live our dream in France.
After a long year of building work we are now 'itching' to get started. We are looking forward to sharing our French oasis with others who need to relax and re-charge their batteries a little!
'We really enjoyed our stay at your place, the kids had a lot of fun both in the gite and in the attractions nearby. For us adults, it was a good opportunity to relax! Without doubt, we might try to come again before the kids aretoo 'young' to find this kind of vacation not exciting enough for them!' Alejandro & Kirsti - Oslo
'We found the gites at Brives an absolute haven of calm and tranquility. This was a wonderful contrast to our busy life at home and our two weeks were a wonderful break. Phil and Glyn, you were excellent hosts who were always available when required. The facilities in the gites were well beyond our expectations and had everything you could need for a family holiday. The pool and 'games' you provided also gave the children lots to do.' Julian & Caroline, Herts.
'Just to say thanks a million for a great stay with you both. The accommodation was top notch and we will certainly recommend you to friends travelling to the area.' Kimmitt & Edel, Ireland
Myself, my husband and our 2 children, 7 and 10, stayed in Le Marronnier for 2 weeks at the end of August.
We had the most amazing, relaxing couple of weeks in our gite and will definitely be returning.
On arrival our hosts met us and took us to our gite, which far exceeding our expectations in every way. We had a welcome box including bread, butter, wine, homemade jam etc and the gite was spotless.
We thoroughly enjoyed all the facilities including a beautiful pool and boule terrain. The kids loved the play park and it was so safe that they were able to go off around the five acre grounds on their own without a worry.
The weather was amazing, at least 30 degrees most days and we were able to go to the beautiful nearby beaches at Saint-Palais on a number of occasions. We BBQd most evenings on our built in BBQ on our lovely private terrace. The sunsets were fabulous too, especially with a glass of local vino.
Phil and Glyn were always available if you needed anything but were not at all intrusive (a perfect balance). We were twice treated to some delicious homegrown tomatoes and Glyn passed me a number of books, they were so kind.
We were very sad to leave and wish we'd booked 3 weeks! All in all an amazing holiday, our favourite family holiday to date ❤️
Just back from our fourth stay at La Grange. As always the Gite and all facilities were pristine and Phil & Glyn were warm and welcoming.
The Gite is fully equipped with everything you could need for your stay, including English TV channels, fully equipped kitchen, private patio and barbecue. Bikes are available for hire and the relatively flat landscape is perfect for cycling around.
Gites de Brives is a little slice of heaven in a truly beautiful part of France. When we weren't enjoying the sun terrace and beautifully kept pool we went sightseeing in places such as Cognac, Jarnac, Pons and Talmont. We went kayaking on the Charente and had a tour of the Otard Cognac house.
The fact that we are planning our FIFTH visit to Gites de Brives surely says it all!
We have just spent a fantastic 2 weeks at Gites de Brives. Glyn and Phil were great hosts. We (2 adults & 2 kids aged 8 and 10) stayed in Le Marronnier, a 2 bedroom gite with its own patio area and BBQ. The gite was a perfect size for us (despite appearing to be a little cramped in the TV area on the Youtube video). We found it plenty big enough for our needs. The gite layout was perfect for the very hot weather - the old stone walls helped as did the ability to leave open some windows to draw the air through when we were out. The kitchen was well equipped and it was great to be provided with some basics on arrival (food and wine as well as cleaning gear, hand soap, dishwasher abs etc). The boys appreciated the UK TV access, especially with the Olympics on!
We all enjoyed the pool and the garden games (boules and table tennis especially popular). The area was good for a family holiday- we canoed in Cognac, cycled the quiet country roads (especially the morning cycles to the bakery in Donpierre), and visited the gorgeous beach in St Georges de Didonne and the zoo in Palmyre. We would still have plenty to do on another visit.
We really enjoyed our stay and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to others.
We stayed in La Grange but there are four gites on site as well as chambre d'hotes. What is paradise? Maybe it's lovely weather, friendly owners, few bugs, great facilities, good company, lots to do, lovely area, good restaurants within easy reach, local shopping and a nice local town with good amenities for tourists. Also for me a good range of wildlife and great photo opportunities. A very relaxing holiday. It's not a busy region and the roads are a pleasure to drive. Beaches are an hour's drive away for those who love the sea. Phil and Glyn go out of their way to make guests feel welcome and help them enjoy their holiday. I can't wait to go back again.
Perfect quiet retreat for a relaxing holiday. Lovely location, great hosts, and excellent facilities. Thoroughly recommended
Gite de Brives is in a good location close to both Saintes and Cognac. The property is surrounded by fields of vines and sunflowers and is quiet and peaceful. There is an excellent pool, gym, outdoor table tennis and boule. Sky UK tv is available and there is a good selection of DVDs . The Internet access is very good .There is lots of outdoor space.
The property was well furnished and equipped and we had everything we needed ( and more than we expected ) for an enjoyable stay. We made good use of the bbq and the private patio area.
Phil and Glyn made us feel very welcome and gave us lots of useful advice on where to go and what to do both close at hand and further afield.
We very much enjoyed our stay and hope to return some day.
