Holiday Home in Newbiggin, Bishopdale, Yorkshire Dales, England - Unspoilt Village in Beautiful Bishopdale

Situated at the end of this unspolit village in beautiful Bishopdale is The Stable. No through traffic, the nearest we get to rush hour is when the local flock of sheep is moved, it can be pretty noisy for a while. We converted a stable 4 years ago into a small but very special 2 bedroom house and for between 4 and 5 months of the year (June- early October) it is our home. It is therefore equipped to a much higher standard than most holiday cottages with high quality furnishing, including some antiques. We would ask any guest contemplating sharing it with us to accept that some cupboards are private and 'out of bounds' though of course there is plenty of storage space for your needs. The house is set back from the road with ample parking for 3 cars. At the front is a flight of stone steps leading up to a door from bedroom 1. This is a feature typical of many barns and was used to take the hay into the loft so that it could be forked down to the animals as necessary.

About the Owner

My husband, a retired vet, and I, a retired physiotherapist, have lived and worked in the Yorkshire Dales, an area we love for it's stunning scenery and walking. Newbiggin is a perfect example of a friendly Dales community. We love living here and we never dreamt that we would ever buy anywhere abroad, but, 8 years ago we went to the Western Algarve on holiday and fell under the spell of the wild and beautiful coast line and especially it's wonderful climate. From holidays we gradually made the decision to spend more time there and converted The Stable from a derelict stable in the Dales (ref.E1458) to allow us to enjoy the luxury of living in both beautiful places. So, we now spend about 7-8 months in Portugal and the summer in Yorkshire and feel very privileged to enjoy this lifestyle.

Thank you for allowing us to stay in your lovely cottage. This is the third year running that we have spent in Wensleydale but this has been by far the best....we loved sitting at the top of the garden and taking in the wonderful view.



We have had a very enjoyable week staying in the Dales. The cottage is very cosy and comfortable and the garden is a delight. On our visits to the Dales over many years we have stayed in numerous cottages and this is one of the best.

Four stars doesn't do this property justice!

What a find, this property is so much nicer than the online brochure leads you to believe. Truly luxurious with a kitchen straight out of Ideal Homes! With underfloor heating downstairs & radiators upstairs the house is very snug. The terraced garden is very pretty & ideal for guests with dogs.

The village is very quiet but gives easy access to the main road through Wensleydale. It is also just off the main road between Wensleydale & Wharfedale. Swaledale too is easily accessed so together there is much delightful exploring to be done almost on the doorstep.

Although only a good hours drive away from our home in Teesdale this was an area my wife & I enjoyed exploring as it is different in many ways to our home surroundings.

This is a cottage & area we will return to.

Location

Converting this small stone building gave us the opportunity to conserve the feel of the old structure, whilst benefiting from all the advantages of modern building methods. We have ended up with a cosy home which we feel is quite unique. The Dales countryside, as immortalized by James Heriot, is stunningly beautiful and we appreciate our good fortune in being here.

This a wonderful centre for walking and cycling and of course touring the Dales.

Coast/Beach:

The coast is 2 hours drive away.

Travel:

A car is essential. We will provide detailed directions on booking.

Distances:

A very good pub serving excellent meals is within walking distance (400 yards). The villages of Thoralby and West Burton both with a pub and shop are 2 miles and Aysgarth and its falls are 4 miles away. The market town of Hawes is 8 miles to the west and Leyburn 9 miles to the east.

Further Details:

We are 20 miles off the A1 at Leeming. There are many restaurants and pubs in the area. Banks can be located in Hawes and Leyburn. Fuel in Leyburn, Bainbridge and Hawes. There are many places of interest in the vicinity - Bolton Castle where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned is close. Middleham near Leyburn has an impressive castle, Richard 3rd's favourite home and is also interesting for those who would enjoy watching the race horses in training there take their morning gallop on the moor. Richmond where the beautiful River Swale winds its way round the dramatic Castle. And of course, endless possibilities for walking in Bishopdale, Wensleydale, Wharfedale, and Swaledale, all within easy reach.

  • Description of sleeping capacity: Sleeps 4 (2 Bedrooms) Notes on bedrooms: A staircase leads from the living room to a small landing off which are the 2 bedrooms, both with double beds. Not large rooms but sloping ceilings, whilst allowing plenty of head room, make them very attractive with plenty of storage space.

  • Notes on accommodation: We accept well behaved pets but we do stipulate that they are not allowed upstairs and on any furniture and we make a charge of £10.00 per week or £2.50 per day per dog. This is a sheep farming area so dogs do need to be kept under control. We do not feel that the house is suitable for small children. Sorry, but we do not accept smokers. Outside: The large private garden has table and chairs for outside dining and a gas BBQ. It is terraced leading up through lawns and beds to an upper decking which affords stunning views over the Dale. A tumbling waterfall provides a natural water feature. There is a gravelled parking area for 3 cars and a lawn at the front of the house. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: High quality linen and towels are provided.
