High Oak House is a character, terraced, 300 year old house… It contains a self-catering, second-floor apartment situated in central Ashburton – a stone’s throw away from cafes, bars, boutiques and a good range of local shops, with Dartmoor on the doorstep…
The accommodation is newly appointed, and represents a fusion of ancient and modern – with exposed beams and a thoroughly modern wet room, a roll top bath up on the open-plan mezzanine sleeping platform, and all the conveniences of elegant, comfortable living down below.
The apartment sleeps 4: a double bedroom, with views of the hills and church spire from the window seat, and an en-suite wet room… Upstairs there’s a double bed and bathroom on the mezzanine platform. The main living space is open plan, with kitchen, diner and living-room over-lapping, enabling you to combine food and socialising in an easy, intimate atmosphere. The 3 windows and roof lights ensure a light-filled space for your relaxation and enjoyment. An extra pull-out bed is available on request.
Outside and up a flight of steps, a designer-built garden overlooks the valley opposite, and provides a sun-trap in the afternoons for lazy barbecues…
Sophie Conran crockery, Egyptian cotton sheets and complimentary artisan coffee and chocolate truffles complete the indulgent ‘holiday’ mood.
A concierge service is available should you need us to book or recommend restaurants, massage and beauty treatments, hampers of local produce or even CRB checked baby sitters… We can be on hand to ensure you have the best possible holiday experience - don't worry though, we will never intrude on your privacy... Attractions include River Dart country park, Buckfast Abbey, a climbing wall at Buckfastleigh, an otter and butterfly farm and the Devon steam train, and New for 2014 state-of-the-art poured concrete skate park in Ashburton... the town also has a heated outdoor swimming pool.
About the Owner
I have lived in this area for 16 years. I love having dartmoor on the doorstep which is an unspoilt wilderness to explore on foot, bicycle or horseback. I enjoy films, good conversation and fine food. I am a gardener and designer by profession. We completely refurbished this property when we bought it 11 years ago - nothing had been done for 30 years! I was able to put my design skills to good use in the garden (which was a bramble patch with a ruined pig sty when we bought it!). We tried to retain some of the character of the original building, by exposing the original beams for example, whilst creating a home with all the comforts of modern living...You will be the first to enjoy the bijou apartment which was completed in July 2014.

“I love Dartmoor on the doorstep for the walks and contact with nature. The edge of the moor where I live is softer than the high moor, there are more trees and rivers. There's a stream just a few hundred yards from the house, and a circular walk close by with views and woodland too.. I can hear it from my bedroom if I have the window open at night. The shops are just a minute's walk from the door, lots of boutique gift shops, antique shops, 2 delicatessens, a wine bar, a quaint hardware shop, hairdressers, beauticians, massage therapists, clothes shops, an outdoor pursuits shop, and a bike shop called 'big peaks' (a couple of minutes away by car). There is also a fabulous adventure playground with swimming pool, flying foxes, pirate ship etc. called River Dart country Park 5 mins by car.”

Ashburton has built a national reputation with its school of cookery and the locality offering fresh sourced organic produce such as the famed Riverford organic farm. Dartmoor is an area of outstanding natural beauty and attracts hikers, cyclists and canoeists. The River Dart country park on the edge of Ashburton, and boasts one of Britain's most beautiful sections of river and is home to an adventure park suitable for the family. Dartington Gardens, arts and Conference centre is about 7 miles from the property, and Totnes with its boutique shops, cafes, restaurants, markets, galleries and alternative lifestyles is 10 miles distant. There is a ferry from Totnes to Dartmouth. The coast is half an hour's drive from the property, with many large and popular and small and secluded beaches to be discovered. Haldon Forest with it's diverse cycle tracks to suit all abilities is 20 minutes drive away. Bikes and segways may be hired on site.
This property is just a pleasant drive (a half hour) to the South Coast, and within easy access of Salcombe, Dartmouth and Torquay.
Nearest overground railway station – Newton Abbot 20 minutes, Totnes 20 minutes. Airports – Exeter 30 minutes and Plymouth 30 minutes.
Exeter 20 miles East, Plymouth 20 miles South West. South Devon Coast and Torquay 10 miles, Dartmoor national park a moments walk. Boutique shops, pubs and restaurants are moments away, Dartmoor is a short walk and the coast is 12 miles to the South.
A 1 hour circular walk can be enjoyed which starts 200 yards from the property and takes in some fantastic views through woodlands by the stream. Trago Mills shopping centre and Fun Park are close for family activity regardless of the weather. Other local attractions include River Dart country park, Buckfast Abbey, an otter and butterfly farm, the Devon steam train, the Devon guild of craftsman visitor centre at Bovey Tracey and of course Dartmoor itself. Castle Drogo and Bovey Castle are both close to Moretonhampstead. the former is a historic building and garden well worth a visit, the latter offers food and swimming pool and luxury spa treatments.

“This house is in a perfect location for me. One minute's walk from shops, bars and cafes, and yet with the moor on the doorstep too. The secluded terraced garden on the hillside, overlooking the wooded valley on the other side of the road, and the distant church spire, is a real plus for me. Great for BBQs and getting the best of the afternoon sun. The new apartment has solid oak floors, a dishwasher, leather sofa, wall-mounted TV and wonderful views to front and back...There's also a brand new poured concrete skate park in the recreation ground less than 10 minutes walk from the apartment.”

- Notes on accommodation: This character filled - modern apartment is finished to a high specification and located on the second and third floors of this terraced 4 storey property. Gas central heating and electricity are included. One well-behaved pet is welcome but regrettably no smoking is permitted within the property. Outside: The lower patio is reached via the first floor rear entrance, and offers enclosed storage for bikes/canoes. Steep steps lead to a raised deck area and further upward steps lead to a secluded lawn and patio with BBQ enjoying views over rolling fields beyond. As well as the enchanting secluded garden to the rear the house benefits from a large public grassed space to the front, this follows a small stream and has a child’s playground in one corner. Utility Room: Washing machine under stairs on ground floor (you don't hear it!) shared with ground and first floor apartments. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All bedlinen and hand and bath and tea towels are provided, maid service can be arranged. Please bring your own beach towels. Other: mezzanine with double bed, and Victorian-styled bathroom with roll top bath and views of distant moorland. Heated towel rail.
