About the property

Villa near Civitella del Lago, Nr. Orvieto, Umbria, Italy - Between Orvieto and Todi, Easy access to Rome and Florence

A magical house, tastefully furnished, set in a hectare of its own grounds at the edge of a Roman village in the Tiber National Park, with stupendous views of the Tiber Valley and Lake Corbara. The classical Umbrian house is well equipped with 2 en-suite bathrooms, a huge fireplace, plus its own pizza oven, barbecue, table football, bikes and a large trampoline. It is surrounded by beautiful unspoilt Umbrian countryside, olive groves and vineyards everywhere, with some of the best food in the world. Lake Corbara is an excellent location from which to explore the best of Italy - day trips to Rome, Florence, Perugia or Assisi by train or car, or simply explore nearby Orvieto's famous cathedral, and medieval Todi.

About The Owner

Three of us bought the house in 2006, Emma Barker, her husband David Poyser, and his sister Angela Paterson. We fell in love with the area taking our little daughter to a place called the Villa Pia on the Umbria/Tuscany border every year. Emma and David live in London though David works in Brussels. Emma runs a television company in London. Angela has three grown-up children and lives in Surrey where she teaches English to Japanese students.

Why The Owner chose Orvieto area

We liked the proximity to Rome which is excellent for transport and also the world's best city for tourism, in our view. Florence is also easily accessible by train or car in the other direction.

Since we bought the house, we now have a 'local' airport at Perugia for Ryanair flights

It is extremely well situated when the airport at Viterbo is opened up.

What makes this villa unique

It is really good fun to live in a working agricultural village. They supply grapes for Orvieto wine, and they make top end of the market olive oil.

The Roman history of the village makes it special. The garden is massive, we have not yet explored the boundary even after three years.

It is a total contrast from London.

Excellent detached 4 bedroom house in a peaceful rural setting. View to die for. Wonderful evenings sitting admiring the fireflies and distant views of Orvieto. Small sleepy attractive village of Civitella a five minute drive away.Highly recommended.

Very good stay

  • 5 of 5

We have enjoyed a very good stay in Umbria, in the casa. The magnificent view, splendend pool and beautiful house itself makes us want to come back another time.

The house was very well equipped, it felt like home. There is no noise in the neigbourhood and privacy is garanteed. Shops and the city of Orvieto are nearby. Hope to come back sometime! Thanks to the owners for making this a wonderful stay!

A blissful retreat in Umbria

  • 5 of 5

We had the most fantastic holiday at Casa Emilia. It hit the mark for everyone in our group: grandparents in their 70s, 40-something parents and a young 3-year-old - from the trampoline-with-a-view, clean and modern pool, table football and spacious kitchen and dining areas indoors and out, to the tranquil 'prosecco terrace', luxurious bathrooms and quality linens. The rockery garden was abuzz with hummingbird hawk-moths, cicadas and swallowtail butterflies, and we were all spied over by large circling birds of prey.

With so much to enjoy, it was a shame not to spend all our time at the villa, but we made the most of being within an hour's drive of Assisi, Orvieto and Todi for some memorable cultural visits too.

The steep slope to access the property would probably not suit visitors with limited mobility/adventurous toddlers and Scoppieto village may be a bit quiet for lively teens. For us it was perfect. We flew to Perugia airport, an hour away, and hired a car, which was essential.

Magical Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in your villa for the first week in July and I can honestly say it was one of the best holidays we've enjoyed as a family. Your villa is beautiful, so relaxing, the gardens and the pool are fabulous, and the view is to die for. It was great being together, we were a large group of my parents, my sister and her children, my husband and our children, and everyone agreed that it was the best holiday we've had in Italy. It was our first visit to Umbria, and the villages were facinating and the food delicious.

Thank you so much for letting us use your holiday home (it as a lovely happy and "well cared for" feel to it) - it has given us many happy memories, not least walking down to the house in the dark with the fire flies all around us, just magical.

Special interest holidays:

A great area for walks around the national park. The restaurant in the next village, Civitella del Lago, has said it does cookery courses, though we have not pursued this. There is an architectural dig in the village - probably not active in the hot summer months.

We are told the coast at Argentaria / Porto San Stefano is less than 3 hours away, and there is a ferry to Isola del Giglio from there

Perugia airport is about an hour. Rome (Ciampino or Fiumicino) under two hours. Orvieto Railway Station (linked to Paris and Eurostar) 25 minutes. A car is essential.

Civitella del Lago (Roman/Medieval village) five minutes by car, Florence – two hours by car (also trains from Orvieto), Orvieto (25 minutes) – a medieval town. You may well recognise the exterior of the stripey Cathedral. Todi – half an hour. A really, really pretty medieval hilltop town. Assisi one hour.

Further Details:

Excellent shops and supermarkets in Orvieto, 25 minutes away. In the nearby village of Civitella del Lago (5 minutes by car) there's a variety of shops (butcher's, chemist, deli with groceries & wine, post office and bakery) and two bar/cafes.
