Bartridge Cottage is Probably the only luxury 2 bedroom cottage in the UK with its own exclusive private heated indoor pool, hot tub and spectacular views! Free Wifi and excellent mobile phone reception on all networks.

The calendar is updated automatically hourly from our master booking system. Remember that Owners Direct charge a guest booking fee. This gives you certain guarantees. For peace of mind we have been operating the cottage for 27 years! Read the trip advisor reviews!

Remember the hot tub, garden and indoor pool are for your exclusive use. They are not used by other people and there is no other holiday accommodation on the site.

The cottage is in a farm location on the side of the Taw Valley with magnificent views of the valley and Exmoor. It is situated exactly half way between Exmoor and Darmoor with the coast and beaches just a 25 minutes drive away.

The outside patio area with sun loungers and table is the ideal place to relax while the grassed play area with swings at the rear is suitable for all ages. A walk through the 2 acre paddock takes you on to a footpath for a 10 minute walk into the local village of Atherington with shop, post office and church. There is also an isolated farm shop just a couple of fields away selling all local produce. The views from the fields are some of the most spectacular in Devon.

The warm indoor pool (normally kept between 31 and 32 degrees C) is fed from spring water and is for your exclusive use. An outdoor hot tub is on a raised patio area outside the pool patio doors and is again for your exclusive use. There is only one holiday cottage on the farm. You can pay by credit/debit card with live availability on our own website.

The cottage sleeps 5 in two bedrooms. It is also possible to have a cot which is provided and can be located in either bedroom. Unfortunately we are unable to accommodate pets and smoking is not allowed inside the pool area or cottage.

The cottage is normally 100% booked every year with the majority of guests being return visitors or on recommendation. It is possible to stay for a weekend or midweek break as well as full weeks. The changeover day are Monday's and Fridays.

Bedroom 1

1 King size bed with new pocket sprung superior mattress plus single bed, built in wardrobe, drawers and radio alarm clock and hair dryer. A cot can be placed in here if required. The views from the bedroom reach across the valley to Exmoor.

Bedroom 2

The cot is a full size wooden one with mattress. It fits in either bedroom. Please let us know which room you require it in.

Fireplace, sofa, armchair, rocking chair, 32" flatscreen HD TV with Freesat, Humax pause and play receiver, HD DVD player and radio. DVD film collection.

Available in the cottage: fridge, hob, built in microwave, oven with grill, iron, night lights, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, torch. Bath, electric power shower, sink and toilet. There is also another shower and toilet in the pool area.

Swimming Pool

30ft x 12 ft tiled pool heated to at least 31 degrees C.

The pool is enhanced by coloured underwater lights and a poolside shower room. A sound system including radio with connection for your Ipod allows music to be played while you swim!

The depth of the pool varies from 1 meter to 1.5 meters. There is a separate toilet adjoining the pool. There are stunning views from the pool of the Taw valley below. Swimming lessons can be arranged. The pool is available between 8.30am and 11:00pm daily (and outside these hours by arrangement with the cleaner!). The hot tub is available all the time. A cot is even provided in the pool area along with a baby alarm if necessary! There is full air heating and dehumidification for winter time and a sliding door giving fantastic views while you swim and access to the terrace with barbecue and spa bath.. Spring water is used in the pool and very low levels of pool chemicals electronically monitored ensure a very comfortable environment.

The pool, patio and hot tub are totally private and there is only one holiday cottage on site. There is also a blind for pulling down over the main pool window if total privacy from the birds flying past is required!

Full oil fired central heating is provided via thermostatically controlled radiators in every room plus a super log burner in the lounge. The central heating boiler is situated outside the property but guests have full control over the heating. Complimentary logs are provided and all heating including the pool is included in the price.

Fully carpeted throughout. Games, jigsaws and book. Linen is provided. (towels are not provided).

About Bartridge Farm Cottage

Veronica and Robert have lived in the Farmhouse for over 30 years and converted the 17th century barns into a cottage and indoor pool over 28 years ago. "We enjoy travelling and visiting new places and have tried to have the cottage as we would like to find on our travels.' The photo is of our family.

Bartridge Farm Cottage purchased this cottage in 1980

Why Bartridge Farm Cottage chose Umberleigh

We have lived in our current house in Umberleigh for over 30 years. When we moved here we thought that we were on holiday all the time because of the superb location and fantastic views, so we converted the holiday cottage and built an indoor pool so that others could enjoy the views and surroundings. It has been let out for 28 years and every season it is full or nearly full, the majority with repeat bookings. Some regulars book up 2 years in advance!

The house and cottage are set a third of a mile from the main Barnstaple to Exeter road so it is totally peaceful with spectacular views. However once on the nearby A road it is easy to reach many places quickly without encountering any traffic!

What makes this cottage unique

We have guests coming back to the cottage year after year because of the tranquility and spectacular views. Its an unspoilt area which is not affected by tourists, with the roads quiet even in the midst of summer. The cottage is unusual in that there are very few two bedroom cottages with exclusive use of an indoor pool and hot tub.

Notes on accommodation: The pool is accessed through a locked door so is secure. It is only available to the guests in the one cottage so you have exclusive use. It is available from 8.30am to 11pm daily and until 9.15 am on the day of departure. The hot tub is available for the same times but may not be available for one day due to emptying and cleaning. We usually require a few minutes access to the pool and tub for cleaning and chemical checking purposes but this is done in consultation with guests. Outside: To the front there is a raised decking sunbathing area with access to the indoor pool. In front of this is a gas barbecue. A small stone barn close by can store bicycles if you bring them, more outdoor chairs and is home to several swallows nests in the Summer and hibernating hedgehogs in the winter! The hot tub is outside in the raised decking area. The play area to the rear of the cottage has wonderful views and has swings, bench and fixed whirly clothes dryer. Through the gate there is a two acre paddock with a tree house. The fields around have cattle and sheep in them. Free range chickens provide eggs most of the year. In 2014 extensive works taking 6 months were undertaken renovating and upgrading the outside area to the cottage. Utility Room: Washing machine, tumble drier, freezer, ironing board. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen and tea towels are included as are toilet rolls, dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid and washing powder. A cleaner carries out a comprehensive clean before guests arrive. On holidays of more than 7 days a change of linen is offered. Other: The 30' x 12' swimming pool is kept between 31c and 32c ensuring enjoyment for even the youngest, in crystal clear water, whatever the weather. The pool is enhanced by underwater lights, sound system and poolside shower room.

The word 'Lovely' pretty much sums up our break at Bartridge Farm Cottage. Set in a beautiful location, the views are amazing across the valley from the suntrap front courtyard. It was a pleasure to watch the House Martins flying to and from their nests under the eaves, where the young chicks chirped in anticipation of their next meal. In the evenings we were lucky to see tiny bats flitting overhead. The Hosts were very approachable and easy to talk to. They struck the right balance of being friendly and helpful, making us feel at home whilst allowing us our privacy. The Cottage itself is spacious yet cosy, and well equipped. The bed was extremely comfortable, that combined with the dark skies and quiet countryside made for the perfect night's sleep. Having the pool to ourselves was a real pleasure and the hot tub felt like luxury. I would and will recommend Bartridge to all. A really enjoyable stay. Thank you so much.

Everything about the place was better than as described in the details.

Spotlessly clean throughout.

Robert and Veronica were really, really nice people with excellent knowledge of the area.

A few friends have been asking for details of the cottage, which were loathed to share, but I made sure I got my next booking sorted before releasing the details.

Plenty to do within half hour of cottage.

Enjoyed a self powered boat trip on Tiverton Canal, Instow dunes were enjoyable for kids, Ilfracombe was a great village and rocky beach which tired us all out.

Lovely Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Very pleasant stay. Very well equipped/clean cottage; well-maintained pool etc. Owners very friendly but not intrusive with wealth of local knowledge to help plan trips eating etc. We will certainly remember the beautiful views from the cottage patio, the best of any cottage we have stayed in. Recommended; would gladly stay again.

We recommend the Bell Inn in Chittlehampton.

Charming cottage with the most uplifting outlook

  • 5 of 5

Since discovering this cottage by chance 10 years ago we have visited it once a year, unable to resist the truly unique combination it offers by it's location, swimming pool, comfort and friendly hosts Rob and Veronica. This is England at it's best; easy access to the coast, moors, green fields and Devon lanes. The local pubs are friendly and the food delicious. We have cycled, walked and swum our way to many really delightful holidays here and I cannot recommend it highly enough. In the dark days of winter the thought of a week at Bartridge really lifts my spirits- which reminds me I must book for next year!

Owner's Response: It's always nice to have such lovely guests. There has been a really positive response to the major refurbishments and upgrades that have been carried out over the past couple of years particularly to the front decking, patio and hot tub area. We look forward to welcoming more guests who will appreciate what the cottage and area has to offer.

Car: necessary

The cottage is located in the centre of farmland and it is possible to walk over the fields by public footpath to the neighboring village of Atherington in under 15 minutes. Views are spectacular.

Because of the central location of the cottage a very wide variety of beaches and coastline can all be reached in under thirty minutes drive. Insow - 20 minutes, Woolacombe, Croyde, Saunton - 30 minutes. You can chose between rocky, sandy, surfing, rock pooly, secluded, commercial beaches to suit your need.

There are 7, 18 hole and 2, 9 hole golf courses within 30 minutes drive including championship courses at Saunton and Westward Ho! 2 courses are less than ten minutes away.

Approx 40 mins drive from junction 27 on M5. 12 mins drive from Barnstaple, South Molton and Torrington. Car is really important here and although the Tarka Cycle Track is not far away it is not ideal cycling very close to the farm due to the steepness of the roads and winding main road.

15 mins to RHS Rosemoor. 35 mins to Exmoor or Dartmoor.

Eden Project can be visited in a day or why not take the train from the local station (1 mile away) into Exeter (1 hour) or Barnstaple (8 mins).

Further Details:

Luxury amongst tranquility! In the heart of unspoilt Tarka country, (from Henry Williamson's 'Tarka the Otter') Bartridge Cottage is ideally situated to explore the rolling landscape of Exmoor, the deep wooded valleys, rugged coastline, sandy beaches, pretty villages or bustling seaside towns. The cottage is set in its own tranquil location next to the farmhouse amongst farmland on the side of the Taw Valley. Approached along a private lane that winds its way up from the River Taw below to its commanding viewpoint on the side of the valley, it provides spectacular views for many miles around. Buzzards, deer, badgers, rabbits, foxes, owls, bats and kingfishers are amongst a number of animals that are local inhabitants.

Special interest holidays:

Our friend & neighbour is the artist Colin Allbrook. He undertakes private courses in his studio or at the cottage. One of the most respected and renowned painters in the South-West of England he works in both oils and watercolours and through the use of light and colour, Colin depicts the life & activity of the area. He is is regularly selected for prestigious exhibitions such as the Sunday Times Watercolour competition and the Royal Institute of Painters in Oils. He is an elected member of the Royal institute of Painters in Watercolour (RI), the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) and the Society of Equestrian Artists (SEA).

He has received many awards for his work, including, in 2009, both the Turner Watercolour Award and the Rowland Hilder Award for landscape painting at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour exhibition. He has also twice won the 'Terence Cuneo' medal at the SEA and the 'Excellence in Watercolour' prize at the Royal West of England Academy four times.
