Property type barn
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Barn (Mas) near Ceret, Pyrenees Orientales, France - Wilderness Location, 5 Minutes Walk to Spain

Cortal del Baille is a centuries old stone barn which has been tastefully converted to provide a very comfortable home from home for 8 people. It nestles at the top of a hill from which you look out on to the Spanish border. The barn is surrounded by wilderness, woods and meadow and you can simply walk into the surrounding hills. There is a private pool in the meadow behind the barn with tremendous views all around. A truly wonderful place to experience nature, peace and quiet in the sun. There are several local restaurants within 3 miles. The original farmhouse and another barn are adjacent to Cortal del Baille and are uninhabited. Amazing star gazing beside the Cork Oaks. Good bird watching. Great walks - actually on the GR7 - cross Pyrenean Walk. Discover the artists who worked in this area - Picasso, Dufy, Dali, C. Rennie McIntosh, Malliol or pop down to the beaches in France or Spain. The sun shines here an average of 6 days out of 7 all year round.

About Caitriana

Martin and Caitriana have lived in this part of France since 2005 and they LOVE it!

Waking up every morning to glorious views, eating seasonally from our potager and the fantastic local markets, the quality of life here is simply outstanding.

There are so many things to do and places to explore - it really is simple pleasures all the way.

Caitriana purchased this barn in 2004

Guestbook comments from the owner

I just want to paint this! - Jim, aged 9, when going into the back garden! We loved enjoying the peace and quiet of picnic's under the old cork oaks, watching the dozens of butterflies supping the wild lavender's nectar. Also hearing the owl hoots in the night were a big thrill, reminding us of our childhoods. Oh, we could never forget the fantastic market in Ceret on Saturday morning and the visit to see the Picasso's in the Museum of Modern Art in Ceret in the afternoon. You really have something special there! - The Woodwards.

The Saturday morning markets in Ceret and Figueres are great, we found loads of local fruit, veg, cheeses, wine, olive oils, bread, salami's, sausages - we didn't stop!! - The Longs

The whole of Catalonia is renowned for it's thermal springs and Spa's- there are some at Le Boulou, just 30 mins away, but also many others to choose from in both France and Spain. Catalonia is a gastronomic delight. Spanish Catalonia boasts 4 of Spain's' 7 Michelin 3 Star restaurants. In Spain, eating out is much cheaper than in France and so you can really go to town and team excellent food with the local wines. We can give you details of great restaurants hidden away in the hills that only the locals know about. The local markets are definitely a "must do" and are very vibrant with lots of local producers selling their cheeses, salamis, honeys and fruits. Anchovies are still caught off the coast and all types of shellfish, oysters and very fresh fish are for sale. Cafe society is vibrant in Ceret, focusing on Bar Pablo (Picasso), where it is wonderful to sit under the centuries old plane trees, with the locals and have a beer or coffee and watch the world go by. The area is also famous for it's wines - Fitou, Banyuls, Maury, Muscat de Rivesaltes, Collioure, Alt Emporda and Penedes. There are lots of wine caves to visit and taste. The area is also a haven for wildlife and especially birds like pink flamingos in the coastal etangs, eagles, owls, woodpeckers and hoopoes in the garden. The coastal strip is great for migrating birds of all sorts. The area has fantastic walks - in the hills, along the coastal paths, around lakes, past prehistoric dolmens, roman churches and through vineyards. The area is known for it's special light which has attracted many artists over the years, Ceret houses Picasso's in it's Museum of Modern Art and Dali's Museum in Figueres. Collioure has it's Artist's Trail, so that you can follow in the footsteps of Matisse, Dufy, CR MacIntosh and others. Horse riding, paragliding, mountain biking and parachuting are all locally available.

A very relaxing holiday

  • 5 of 5

The property is spacious and comfortable and set in beautiful surroundings. It is comprehensibly equipped with all that is needed for a home from home. The weather was warm and sunny throughout our stay, so we had no need to avail ourselves of the huge selection of books and videos on offer.

Set in the foothills of the Pyrenees, the property is splendidly private, we would sit out in the evenings with a glass of wine and watch the bats, and later on, the stars, which are magnificent in that part of the world.

We enjoyed many lovely meals in the restaurants of Ceret, Argeles sur Mer, Collioure and Roses. The €17.9 menu at the restaurant at the El Sol supermarket in La Jonquera is great value, we had moules mariniere, gilled sea bass with vegetables and fries, followed by creme Catalan with what seemed like half a bottle of wine each.

Our dog Muttley was free to roam as far as he wanted to his hearts content, and in the evenings he would hold long in depth conversations with the hound pack located a mile or so away. Luckily there were no neighbours for him to upset!

All in all a very enjoyable holiday.

Steve and Jo Eastman.
