Le Verger Review
We enjoyed staying in this large property. It's clearly a personal but beloved home from home but it's comfortable - if you like the French quiet life, alfresco dining and rural it's lovely. Well located for Calais. Some bathrooms and bedrooms a little bit tired - but the lounge is lovely and it's all about the gardenand patio really. Pizza oven was an exciting experience, and the local restaurant in Hesdin was excellent.

Fantastic house - perfect for large families
We spent two weeks at Le Verger and had a fantastic time. Our family range from 4-74 and the house was perfect for our needs. The bedrooms were well spaced out and comfortable - we didn't ever feel like we were crowded or 'on top of each other'. There were a good number of bathrooms and toilets too, which is handy for a large group. Our bedroom was great as it had a wall of bookshelves with a fantastic collection of books to read. The master bedroom with the bath was another great room. The lounge was a good size for gathering, with extra comfortable seating in the kitchen. The kitchen itself was well kitted out for our needs. There was plenty of space to eat both indoors and outdoors. Outside - the grounds are large with a number of good places to sit. We had many games of boules! The shed contains bikes and some outdoor toys etc, which is a great touch. Some members of the family enjoyed playing ping pong as well. The pizza oven was a great hit and a lovely addition for the holiday. The owners were very responsive to our questions and needs, which made the experience all the better. The house has been renovated very well -sympathetic to the original building but with good modern additions, including good wifi, which the teenagers particularly were grateful for! There were a lot of helpful added touches, including a good number of plug adapters for our UK plugs and a hairdryer. Nearby, Hesdin is a great town with good places to eat. The market there on a Thursday is extensive and well worth a visit. We also visited Denleys Parc, which is a theme park with rides. Very reasonable and plenty of spaces to bring your own picnic. There was a lovely tabac nearby, which some members of our group really enjoyed visiting and the beach at Le Touquet was a great hit! Some of our family also went to use the farm vending machine in Cavron, which was unexpected! The church next to the property also had some war graves which were very moving. All in all, it was a great holiday and we are very glad we booked this house - only an hour or so from Calais as well, which was a great bonus. I would highly recommend, especially for large families.

Wonderful stay at Le Verger
Everything about Le Verger has been said in previous reviews and is correct so what can I add? The rooms are larger than the photographs depict and the garden vast and safe for children with rabbits at the bottom. The weather was surprisingly good allowing us to take advantage of the two BBQ's but the star of the show was the pizza oven which was a wonder to the menfolk who we had to stop cooking everything in it!! On the subject of pizza, at the bottom of the lane is the pizza vending machine which had to be tried as it was a most unexpected find in a little French village. I feel I must also mention the kite festival at Berk which was about 45 mins away. It is like no other kite festival I have ever seen and was a wonder to the grandchildren. Our stay was a real joy and was so successful for all ages from 3 to 70 that we may well make it an annual event.

Really lovely house in a beautiful setting
We so enjoyed staying in your lovely house. Everything was comfortable, warm and well-equipped. We had a really great weekend - and Le Verger was the perfect setting. The kitchen had everything we needed to cater for a large group, and we enjoyed relaxing around the fireplace in the evenings. Nearby Montreuil was a great place to stock up with produce from the market, gorgeous bread and cheeses. The glorious sunny weather was a bonus, and we've returned to the UK refreshed and relaxed.

We discovered this property in November 2001.

We wanted a house which was easily accessible from England, so that we, our family, friends and guests could would make the best use of it.

This was the second house we viewed and it was love at first sight (although some have suggested we had foresight!).

Moira speaks fluent french and so it was possible to undertake all the renovations using local French builders. Although we experienced some frustrations, mainly around timing, we have been very pleased with the quality of work and value for money.

We find our trips to Le Verger a perfect contrast to our normal London life. We have celebrated a number of our own landmark birthdays and anniversaries at the house. We look forward to hearing from you.

Moira and Peter McDermott.

Why they chose this property

We wanted a house that would be well used (not just once or twice a year).

Living in South London, Nord Pas de Calais seemed the perfect choice.

We had grown to appreciate Montreuil (particularly the wonderful cuisine at the Chateau) and were impressed with the charms of Le Touquet.

We wanted an old house and plenty of land. This persuaded us to extend our search around the market town of Hesdin and that is how we found Le Verger.

Travelling from London, it is true to say that one arrives feeling more relaxed than when setting off! Then the tranquility of the place just gently grabs you as the arduous task of uncorking wine bottles and lighting log fires becomes the main work of the evening.

We love the many markets in local towns and buying good wine for £3 a bottle.

What makes this property unique

Although the property oozes with character (14c chapel, 1 metre thick stone walls and exposed elm beams), it is bang up to date with wall and roof insulation and double-glazed windows with solid wood frames.

This means you experience the inexplicable atmosphere of a really old and significant building, with all the comfort and convenience of a truly modern home.

Although there lots of excursions you can go on: Le Touquet (Paris Plage), Agincourt, Pleasure Park, Golf at Nampont St Martin, Nature parks, cafes, restaurants and bars, we find that most people prefer to chill out or play games at the house.

Our kitchen has been described by guests as 'a cook's paradise'. Certainly, one of the joys is to visit Hesdin food market on Thursday morning, stock-up on food and then cook it.
