About the property

Villa in Pollica, Campania, Italy - Peaceful Location, Short Drive to Sea and Restaurants

Capalia is a country house lovingly restored to retain the original walls of the house with modern living inside. The solid stone walls create a natural cool in the summer and retain the warmth of the log fire in winter.

Capalia is in the Cilento National Park, a Unesco World Heritage Site. The house is set in its own 13 acres of olive groves and terraces of figs, pomegranate and carob tress with open views of the sea and sunset. A pergola runs the length of the house creating a cool place to relax during the heat of the day or dine in the warm evenings. During the hot months visitors can lounge by the private swimming pool.

It is a perfect base from which to explore, from easy strolls to all day hikes along spectacular ridges and deep gorges. For sea lovers there are long sandy beaches, pebbly coves or boat trips. For cultural activities visit the ruins of the ancient Greek cities of Paestum and Velia or glimpse a bygone way of life in the abandoned villages of the Cilento.

About The Owner

Always in search of special places, wilderness and nature.

The Owner purchased this farmhouse in 1999

Why The Owner chose Salerno province

The weather can be sublime at any time of the year, and unlike most of the rest of Italy the motorway and railway cut behind the Cilento and so have not spoilt the coast. The sea is stunning and the national park is the second biggest of Italy, offering sea, rivers and mountains. So the relative difficulty of access has saved the Cilento. The mountains are covered in hard-wood beach and chestnut forests and are ideal for wilderness camping trips all year round. All-year round the location is quiet as the house is set in 13 acres of its own land. The olive-picking season from October to December is my favourite time of year.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Starry skies at night, crisp clean air, long summers, fantastic sea and breathtaking mountains overlooking the sea. Birds of prey and a variety of furry animals inhabit the park. Greek temples and ancient footpaths across a very beautiful landscape.

Notes on accommodation: Children's swings, trampoline and ping-pong table in extensive private outside space suitable for children. The house has no air-conditioning because the solid stone walls keep the house cool. The hilltop position and open views also contribute to good ventilation during the hot months. We have found that the downstairs fireplace and electric heaters in the bathrooms avoid the need for central heating during the mild winter months. Furthermore the house is very dry and does not suffer from any damp. Outside: Large outside garden (and 13 acres of extended countryside) with benches, sunning beds and deck chairs. 12 x 6m private pool with bar, fridge, dishwasher, sunning beds, deck chairs, diving board and steps. First time staying here, it was utterly amazing, the pictures don't quite do the house, gardens scenery and views justice. Every where you turn, there's a view framed beautifully by the flora and fauna growing in the gardens, or by the balcony (where we enjoyed sunset every evening), or from the pagoda (where we enjoyed shade in the middle of the hot Italian days), or by the pool, which was perfectly sized. The house has been sympathetically renovated and is a genuine family home, full of wonderful trinkets, pictures and hints at a lifetime spent building this home in the sunshine. I Would happily recommend this property to anyone. Dominic's recommendations were much appreciated and his communication was great. Thanks for a wonderful week away in the sun!

Lovely old Italian farmhouse with a big pool overlooking the sea.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday at Capalia which is in a very beautiful and peaceful location. There is a footpath to Pollica and the lovely beach of Acciaroli is only ten minutes drive away. We loved picking figs and tomatoes from the garden and having morning coffee at Bar Jerry in Pollica looking at the fabulous coastline. The fig festival at S. Mauro and our dinner at Mario's in Pollica were also highlights of our stay.

Lovely house, fantastic view and quiet area

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time in this comfortable house, located in a very beautiful nature area with a big swimmingpool. A 15 minutes drive to the sea and port and close to some small, charming villages. The owners are very nice and helpful. We definitly recommend this place.

Lovely place for a Spring break

  • 5 of 5

This is our third stay at Capalia and our first time in the Cilento in Spring. On both counts we were delighted. Spring is beautiful in the area and can be quite dramatic (on day 1 we experienced an almighty storm). Most of the time the landscape was washed in sunshine. Capalia has a lovely fireplace and we had plenty of wood left for us to burn. We had some very nice evenings sipping wine by the fire!!! Great place to unwind.

Absolute heaven!!

  • 5 of 5

This is our second stay at Capalia and we will be back again!!

Capalia is high on a hill overlooking rolling hills and with the a breathtaking panoramic view of the sea. The spot is supremely peaceful and stunningly beautiful. The house feels like a home, with all you might ever need. The decoration is simple but very tasteful and there is plenty of room for a good sized family. Last time we stayed we brought our two grown-up children and one of their partners and had more than enough room. The pool is one of the best features of Capalia - very large so you can have a proper swim with lovely lovely views. Without exaggeration the place is idyllic.

Capalia is only a few minutes from Pollica village (just up the hill) where you can find grocery shops, a fishmonger and a very nice bar. Down below is Acciaroli, a lovely and very Italian Marina with various bars, restaurants and a fantastic beach. The house is in the Cilento National Park, a protected area of outstanding natural beauty. Last week we saw wild boar!

The rocky coast is a little known gem!!! To get to Capalia you pass scenery that puts the Amalfi to shame. There are some beautiful beaches in the area too; Acciaroli (as mentioned above) is a favourite of mine but there are many. So far the tourists are few and far between (relatively speaking) and the local authorities have ensured that development of the national park area is sympathetic to nature and not over-run with businesses pandering to tourists. This means that here you can still have an authentic Italian experience. From Capalia Naples, Pompei and the Amalfi Coast are less than two hours away and there are some very interesting Greek ruins at Paestum (an hour away at most), so it's a great base for a exploring.

A beautiful, well maintained property in a stunning part of S Italy

  • 5 of 5

My family and I recently spent a week in Capalia for my mother's birthday and it was perfect.

Capalia is a great house with stunning views over the Cillento hills and out to sea. The pictures of the property are great but do not nearly do the place justice; the house is in such a magical setting with lemons and oranges growing a few metres from the kitchen, the pool is large and very clean with plenty of space and shaded seating for all the family and the house is all so beautifully done that we found any plans to leave and explore soon got reconsidered!

Pollica is a few minutes' drive up the road and is a picture perfect little town with a great place to sit and have coffee with views out to sea and several eating options. We took Dominic's recommendation of going to Mario's B&B for our first meal and we are glad we did - Mario is a great character and is very passionate about preparing great meals, and dining in his courtyard in itself is worth the trip.

Acciaroli is a few minutes' down the road and is a beautiful harbour town with just the right amount of hustle and bustle and choices of cafes and restaurants.

What a stunning part of the country and Capalia is everything we had hoped for and more.
