House in Salies de Bearn, Pyrenees Atlantiques Aquitaine, France - In the Heart of the Medieval Market Town Salies De Béarn. One of The Oldest Houses in the Village.
Built in 1648 this Little Gem was completely renovated in 1995. Le Petit Bijou is a lovely townhouse that sits directly on the River Salies & the soothing sound of rushing water is ever present from within. The house consists of 3 floors. On the ground floor as you enter the house you'll find a summer kitchen. This is currently being used to store guest bikes/skis etc. On the first floor (2nd USA) you'll find a hall with cupboards, a shower room equipped with extra large shower stall, toilet, bidet, & sink. Off the hallway is the bedroom with double bed. After a short climb up a staircase you'll come to the living area. At one end of the top floor you'll find another small shower room with toilet, a kitchen, & a balcony overlooking the river. The spacious balcony with bistro table & chairs for two is a wonderful place to relax with a glass of wine or beer & watch the world go by.
*Please note: Because Le Petit Bijou is a listed building there are ordinances against erecting equipment on the roof top. At this time we are unable to guarantee that you will have a television signal, nor Wi-Fi. However, we are actively working to sort this situation. Thank you in advance for your understanding.*

About the Owner
My husband Todd is in the United States Air Force. He is a 'Viper Driver' also known as F16 pilot and a lieutenant colonel. When we got the chance to do an exchange job with the Belgian Air Force we jumped at it. We moved to a little village in the south of Belgium where we lived for an amazing 3 years. Prior to leaving Belgium we agreed that we loved Europe and wanted to invest in a holiday house in France. It was a logical choice because we both speak French. I found Le Petit Bijou on the internet and took a grueling 13 hour drive with our 90 lb Airedale & 20 lb Welsh Terrier in my VW bug. All three of us fell in love with Salies de Béarn immediately.
Guestbook comments from the owner
David, summer 2009-Your house in Salies was a really great place to stay. The place was very comfortable and allowed us to day trip to the coast, St. Bertrand de Comminges, Pamplona, and a couple of shorter trips. We really enjoyed our stay there. We even bought a lunch of Indian food at the weekly market, and ate at the excellent Chinese restaurant twice (the bouef louklak is delicious).
Fran, Spring 2009-Thank you so much for sharing your Petit Bijou with us. When my friend Debbie and I walked in I said I'm going to love it here, it's so much nicer than our Paris hotel. We both thoroughly enjoyed our stay. During the time we were there we visited the coast, Pamplona, and Lourdes.
Sally, Autumn 2008 This is such a pretty house and village. The bakeries here make exceptionally good croissants and bread. The newsagent across the street sells British newspapers. What more could you ask for. A wonderful week in the Béarn.

Le Petit Bijou,
The property is quaint, different to the normal rentals. It was clean, welcoming and exactly as described - located in the centre of the delightful town of Salies de Béarn. Lots of restaurants, cafés and bars and such friendly people. We enjoyed eating and relaxing on the balcony and watching the locals fishing.
There are lots of interesting places to visit within a short drive. We even ventured into Spain to San Sebastian.
We loved our stay in Le Petit Bijou.
The property was excellent to stay in, just sitting on the balcony having dinner was great. Everything was as advertised. The house is in great location in the centre of town. Lots to see and do in a fifty mile radius, must have a car.
From the Owner
“Salies de Béarn offers it's visitors a bit of both the serene French countryside & the hustle and bustle of a market town with a casino & health spa. Royalty has been coming to Salies since the 19th century to seek the curative properties of the salt water. The Salisiens take a lot of pride in their homes and village. Much of the village, including Le Petit Bijou, dates back to the 1600's. Only the modern buildings have right angles & only the modern streets are straight. It's a crooked little village in that respect. Describing Salies is difficult if not impossible. It is beyond quaint & charming. It's a place that despite the modernities of life has managed to maintain an aura of centuries past. On market day everyone is out & about. You'll see beret's galore. They were invented here.”
Activity and Interests
Special interest holidays:
Salies-de-Béarn has been the envy of man because of the availability of its salt water Firstly for extraction of the salt and, later, for its therapeutic properties. Spa therapy in its present form began in 1857.
The spa waters are strongly salted, rich in Magnesium and ten times more concentrated than seawater! The waters are used for their relaxing properties in chronic and stimulating pain in three main indications : Rheumatology, Gynaecology and Paediatrics and more recently, Health and Fitness!
The spa treatments are numerous and varied, for external applications.
In water at 32°C, you can take advantage of the water jets, geysers, swimming against a current of water, bubbling baths, waterfalls, a fountain (length of the pool: 17 m - depth: 1.30 m) for a beneficial and relaxing treatment. Access to the hammam and heated terrace. Outside fresh water pool (May to September)
Biarritz is a seaside town a mere 45 minutes drive to the West of Salies de Béarn. In modern times it is renowned for surfing. Historically however, it was established in AD 840 by the Vikings. Biarritz became more renowned in 1854 when Empress Eugenie (the wife of Napoleon III) built a palace on the beach (now the Hôtel du Palais). The British royal family regularly took vacations in Biarritz: European royalty such as Queen Victoria, Edward VII, & Alfonso XIII of Spain were frequent visitors.
Pau airprot (PUF)- approx. 45 minutes to the East of Salies
Skiing (Pyrenees)-30-45 minutes drive
Biarritz (BIQ)-45 minutes to the West
Lourdes-approximately 1 hour
Bordeaux-2 hours 15 minute drive
Pamplona, Spain 1.5-2 hours drive
There are numerous places to see in the region. Salies de Béarn has an excellent tourist bureau &, for those of you whom are not comfortable with your French, the lady that runs it speaks English! She can provide you with maps & specific information about the types of sightseeing you wish to undertake. Some of the villages that are often cited as interesting are: Sauveterre de Béarn (medieval defensive town), Navarrenx (the 1st bastioned city in France), & Orthez, the ancient capital of Béarn.
Get up early on Thursday morning to get the freshest fruit and veg from the weekly market. The market also offers a variety of local fares as well as clothing, linen, and the famous beret which was invented in this area. There is a 1902 self-portrait of Picasso depicting the artist wearing a beret. The beret's origins are traced to the Basque region of Europe in the Pyrenees Mountains, the natural border between France and Spain. For more on the history of the beret and why this hat may have been a favorite of this Spanish artist who spent much of his career in France, see BERETS.com
There are several bakeries and patisseries within mere seconds walk from Le Petit Bijou. To get the bread fresh out of the oven go early. The bakers are up before dawn daily creating the world famous baggettes and croissants. Crescent-shaped breads have been made since the Middle Ages. Croissants are made of a leavened variant of puff pastry by layering yeast dough with butter and rolling and folding a few times in succession, then rolling. Making croissants by hand requires skill and patience; a batch of croissants can take several days to complete. They are mouth wateringly delicious. No visit to Salies de Béarn is complete without at least one visit to the boulangerie and patisserie.

From the Owner
“Le Petit Bijou is unique in that although it was built in 1648, it was fully renovated in 1995. The renovation was so extensive that an article about it was published in the local newspaper. During the renovation the owner made the decision to use only the most high quality materials, granite counter tops & Italian tile for example. But as you will see in the photos, the house's was preserved. There are still exposed beams & no room has square corners. Inside Le Petit Bijou you will find all of your modernities including two shower rooms. The best feature is the lovely balcony. It's divine to sit there with a glass of wine & listen to the water from the River Saleys rush by. It also offers a great people watching venue. Don't be surprised if you end up in a tourists photo. Say "fromage".”
