Beautiful Stone Farmhouse close to Normandy beaches

Overview

Property

Updated: 16-May-2016
Farmhouse in Sainte-Mere Eglise, Manche, Normandy - Peaceful and Tranquil

This beautiful farmhouse has 3 double bedrooms and one huge loftspace bedroom and can sleep up to 10 in total (6 in winter). It's in the centre of the Cherbourg peninsula, with both coastlines within easy reach. Great for WW2 historical sites including the Normandy beaches, Utah and Omaha. Very peaceful and relaxing, ideal for families wanting to get away from it all. Bayeux with its famous tapestry is also close by. Lots of wonderful restaurants and charming villages all within easy driving distance. Fresh milk and eggs available from the farm down the road. The house was used as a field hospital during WW2 by American troops, presumably either the 8th Infantry or the 746th Tank Battalion, who saw action close by. The house sits in the heart of the Bessin & Cotentin Natural Park with its famous "marais" landscapes, with plentiful birdwatching opportunities throughout the year. Lots of farm animals too - cows, horses and donkeys in particular! There are plenty of places to go riding.

About the Owner

I enjoyed restoring this house to its former stone-wall glory, leaving many internal walls exposed. I decided not to go for the convenience of en suite bathrooms, because all the bedrooms have lovely wooden partition walls, which a 'modern convenience restoration' would have destroyed. I love old buildings and feel that painting over, removing or tampering with features deprives houses of a lot of atmosphere that only years of use can bestow on them. It's lovely when people can walk into this home and feel that it is 'their' home too, if only for a short while. The kitchen is custom-built with a state of the art induction hob and pyrolytic oven, as when I go there I adore cooking with fresh produce and the large kitchen lends itself to this. Life in Normandy is convivial and peaceful.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Once again we had a fantastic time at your farmhouse - getting away from the madness of TV and work. Loved sitting outside in the new sun loungers, listening to the birds and wind in the trees." 23-30 August 2014 The Gamesons

"We had a very nice time staying here during such an historic week. It was unique to stay in a typical quaint farmhouse rather than a hotel, it made the experience that much more memorable. We drove all around Normandy seeing the many historic sites; Utah Beach, The American Cemetary at Omaha, Ste Mere Eglise and countless other monuments. I was glad to be where my grandfather John G Hayes of the 101st airborne was 70 years ago. Truly unforgettable." 4-7 June 2014 Emily Stanger & Carl Westergard

2Had a lovely time staying here for 3 weeks. Lovely weather and very interesting place. The beaches were fascinating and the whole region is full of history. Would recommend Alligator Bay for a day trip. Also, if needed, the tourist information office has a computer for internet (pay for) and also free wifi." 12th July - 2nd August Mike and Alyson

Lovely Holiday in a Charming Normandy Farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

5/31/2016-6/9/2016 My family and I have spent a glorious D-Day commemoration week plus in Normandy. This lovely Normandy Farmhouse was our home-away-from-home for our stay. Not only is this lovely home an authentically restored historic farmhouse; the house is warm, comfortable, spacious with many modern conveniences and conveniently located just outside Sainte Mere Eglise in a picturesque hedgerow village and there is a gas station and grocery store just a few miles drive away. We purchased fresh milk and eggs from an adorable Normand farmer down the lane and made delicious omelettes for breakfast and dinner, took several long walks and a bike ride (bikes available for use on the property) to neighboring villages along hedgerow lined country roads.

We slept like we haven't slept in a while under warm comforters on heavenly mattresses and woke to the sound of birds every morning! Elka is a lovely host and owner and we highly recommend staying at Normandy Farmhouse on your next visit!

Great house

  • 5 of 5

Great house in a fantastic spot. Idyllic and rustic. We have stayed twice and we love this house. Elka is very helpful and provides plenty of information prior to and during the stay. The local towns are easily accessible and cater for all of your needs - patisserie, supermarche, tabacs etc. The house is situated well to reach all of the historic towns/museums and beaches. Highly recommend :-)

Normandy Farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Normandy Farmhouse last summer for a two week period. From start to finish Elka, the owner, had everything we could want or ask for.

The farmhouse itself was well maintained and in a prime location just a short drive from the village. The local farm where we got our daily supply of milk and eggs was only yards away and could not have been friendlier.

Having spent many a summer holiday in France this is by far the nicest location and property we have been in to date.

If you are looking for a holiday with both tranquillity and so much to do within a short distance...look no further.

Owner's Response: Thank you Iain for your kind recommendation. I'm always really pleased when guests enjoy the house and area as much as we do. We love all our neighbours and they always report back how much they enjoy the fact that our guests stop and chat (even when they don't speak French, hand gestures and smiles are equally appreciated :) ) or when guests buy milk and eggs from them. The long windy roads, framed by hedgerows or, the 'bocage' as the area is known locally, is still almost undiscovered, despite being in the heart of the D-Day celebrations area. We're always surprised how few cars pass the house and how few people can be found on the beach even at the height of summer. The variety of food available at local restaurants and on the fresh food markets is also a delight.

Beautiful old farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

This lovely, original French farmhouse is ideal base to visit the area. It is situated in a peaceful, rural location but is only minutes from St Mere Eglise. The house is beautifully kept and full of period details plus all the mode cons. Children will love the attic room and everyone will appreciate the antique beds with feather duvets. The owner is extremely helpful and provides lots of information and a welcome basket on arrival.

Owner's Response: Thank you for this lovely review. I enjoy providing lots of toys, games (from Badminton to Board games), books and bicycles for adults and children at the house. Even on a rainy day the kids have plenty of space for play in the huge converted loft room. People often say it's a welcome break from video games, the internet and TV, to sit in the deck chairs in the garden or on the terrace listening to the birds. Some guests spend more time at the house cooking in the well-equipped kitchen or using the BBQ than they do sight-seeing. :)

Location

From the Owner

This part of Normandy is peaceful, rural and the neighbours in particular are lovely. It's possible to go on long walks along the roads (with virtually no traffic), to ride bikes (the land is quite flat), to horse ride (it's a horse-breeding area) and to swim and beach-surf. You can pick up fresh milk from the dairy farm down the road and eggs from our neighbours. Excellent also for fishing, paddling along the canals, bird-watching AND eating in fabulous restaurants or buying fresh veg and seafood (and meat) and cooking it yourself. Truly the best of all worlds. And - nearly forgot - the patisserie in Ste Mere Eglise is indeed the best bakery, patisserie, ice-cream, chocolatier in the whole area!! Who could ask for more?

Facilities

From the Owner

Bird song abounds - all day long. At night you can hear the owls and see the bats. The house is only five minutes drive from Ste Mere Eglise, which conveniently has a well-stocked supermarket and an excellent weekly market. It is also a great location for exploring the D-Day beaches, Mont St Michel and various historic castles, monasteries and WWII landmarks and museums. We supply old-fashioned bicycles for use by guests and have recently installed a walk-in shower in the style of the artist/architect Hundertwasser - a truly joyful bathing experience. For kids I've collected small bikes, toys, games, puzzles, balls, bath toys, so that they too feel at home and can enjoy a TV free, games-rich environment. The garden is large and not easily damaged so they have a lot of space to play.
