About the property

Three Moorish cottages

"Almond" is one of three traditional Moorish cottages located on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada of Las Alupujarra in the heart of a National Park. The area has been designated an area of natural beauty by UNESCO. Guests at the three cottages have exclusive use of the 12x6m luxurious swimming pool, the perfect place to relax in the heat of the day. Walkers can enjoy free access to the National Park in all directions from the Cortijos (cottages). The Cortijos are located in isolation from each other in 36 acres of fruit trees and woodland, each with its own private terrace. The cottages can be rented individually or all 3 together depending on numbers. The gardens have a substantial grassed area as well as an organic vegetable garden, a vineyard, countless fruit and nut trees and beautiful ancient chestnut trees.

During the summer months guests are invited to help themselves to the produce of our organic vegetable garden as well as the wide range of fruit and nuts from our trees. This is a paradise for people who enjoy walking and hiking, swimming, horse riding and those who are just wanting to get away from it all in what is known as 'Secret Spain'. Most recently, the success of Chris Stuarts novel, 'Driving over Lemons', has attracted a range of holiday makers looking for a different Spain from all over the world.

The cortijos are equidistant (approx 4 km) from the villages of Busquistar and Trevelez, both of which offer various food shops, bars and restaurants. Trevelez claims to be the highest village in Spain and is famous all over the world for its jamon serrano, cured ham. Wander around Trevelez and anywhere you look you will find jamon legs hanging from the ceiling of bars and restaurants. The famous white villages of Pampaneira, Bubion and Capiliera are about 20 minutes drive away. These picturesque villages are full of traditional flat roofed Alpujarran houses and narrow alleyways, best explored on foot.

For those who wish to explore further afield the cortijos are ideally situated for visiting the world famous Alhambra palace and gardens in Granada which is only an hour away. The Mediterranean coast is also an hours drive from the cortijos so a day at the beach is also easy. The beaches of Salobrena, Herradura, Almunecar are all nearby.

About Mo Fini

We are a family of four Myself: Mo Fini, my wife: Lucy Davies and two children Nina and Leo. Our permanent home is in Bath UK but we have always been travelling. In fact Nina learnt to walk in the back of our landrover when we were travelling across the Americas.

In 1978 I started a Fair trade business called Tumi dealing with Latin American crafts. Our business grew quickly employing some 3000 artisans across Latin America and Europe. We worked closely with all types of Private organizations as well as Oxfam and Traid Craft. I also founded Tumi Music, specialising in Latin American music. Tumi now only sells on line. If you like to find out more please contact me. If you come to our cortijos you will notice the Latin American influence in our houses and in our music collections!

Mo Fini purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Mo Fini chose Granada Province (Costa Tropical)

Las Alpujarras in Sierra Nevada de Andalusia is known as secret Spain. We lived in Costa del Sol running a business for some 15 years but then we we realised we wanted somewhere quiet and unspoilt. It was then we discovered and bought these three old "cortijos" or Moorish cottages and started to re-build and repair them. This is a labour of love and seemingly a never ending project. We continue to plant fruit trees and develop the garden which now includes a vineyard.

We also love walking and the beauty of these cortijos is that they are located in the national park and there are many wonderful walks you can start straight from the cortijos without driving anywhere.

This is a place full of sunshine, fresh fruit and vegetables and natural beauty that refreshes the spirit.

The three Cortijos can house large families and up to 14 people in total.

What makes this cottage unique

Lovely pool, fresh fruit and vegetables depending on the time of the year.

Lovely big oven for baking bread or pizzas...

push bikes....

table tennis....

We do not believe that any other property in Sierra Nevada gives you the geographical location and the opportunity to live at 1500 meters and be only an hour from Granada and an hour from the beach and the same time to be so isolated in the heart of the national park..

It is a paradise for small children as there is plenty of ground to run about . They can even make their own camp site below 600 year old chestnut trees and have fun...

The three Cortijos can house large families and up to 14 people in total.

Fantastic location, views and hosts

  • 5 of 5

This was perfect for us. Being up in the Sierra Nevada meant that the heat was not as oppressive as down in Granada City. The location is superb and full of real character with wonderful views. The buildings are not boring new build holiday homes but instead have been built from authentic local materials to reproduce the feel and heritage of originals on the site going back hundreds of years. The pool is a real swimming pool: Great for doing some exercise to assuage the guilt after all the food and drink. :0). Mo and Lucy are superb hosts and very generous in sharing produce from their extensive fruit and veg gardens. A superb place to really chill out.
