Cottages near Busquistar / Trevelez, Las Alpujarras, Sierra Nevada, Granada Andalusia, Spain
"Almond" is one of three traditional Moorish cottages located on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada of Las Alupujarra in the heart of a National Park. The area has been designated an area of natural beauty by UNESCO. Guests at the three cottages have exclusive use of the 12x6m luxurious swimming pool, the perfect place to relax in the heat of the day. Walkers can enjoy free access to the National Park in all directions from the Cortijos (cottages). The Cortijos are located in isolation from each other in 36 acres of fruit trees and woodland, each with its own private terrace. The cottages can be rented individually or all 3 together depending on numbers. The gardens have a substantial grassed area as well as an organic vegetable garden, a vineyard, countless fruit and nut trees and beautiful ancient chestnut trees.
During the summer months guests are invited to help themselves to the produce of our organic vegetable garden as well as the wide range of fruit and nuts from our trees. This is a paradise for people who enjoy walking and hiking, swimming, horse riding and those who are just wanting to get away from it all in what is known as 'Secret Spain'. Most recently, the success of Chris Stuarts novel, 'Driving over Lemons', has attracted a range of holiday makers looking for a different Spain from all over the world.
The cortijos are equidistant (approx 4 km) from the villages of Busquistar and Trevelez, both of which offer various food shops, bars and restaurants. Trevelez claims to be the highest village in Spain and is famous all over the world for its jamon serrano, cured ham. Wander around Trevelez and anywhere you look you will find jamon legs hanging from the ceiling of bars and restaurants. The famous white villages of Pampaneira, Bubion and Capiliera are about 20 minutes drive away. These picturesque villages are full of traditional flat roofed Alpujarran houses and narrow alleyways, best explored on foot.
For those who wish to explore further afield the cortijos are ideally situated for visiting the world famous Alhambra palace and gardens in Granada which is only an hour away. The Mediterranean coast is also an hours drive from the cortijos so a day at the beach is also easy. The beaches of Salobrena, Herradura, Almunecar are all nearby.

Guestbook comments from the owner
It was the very first time for us in the Alpujarras and luckily we had the opportunity to stay at Almond cortijo. What a magnificent place! One week full of sunshine, stunning views and fantastic surroundings. Had a lot of fun in the pool and the kids loved the bikes and the wheelbarrow. And wow, what a beautiful fruit and veg garden you have! Made use of it a lot, especially our 3year old eating tomatoes, cucumber, figs and nuts whenever he could. We enjoyed every single minute we stayed there and so did the kids. You made us feel so much at home as if we were old friends of you! Thank you so much for one of the most relaxing weeks we ever had. We'll be back and hope to meet you all then.
From the Owner
“Las Alpujarras in Sierra Nevada de Andalusia is known as secret Spain. We lived in Costa del Sol running a business for some 15 years but then we we realised we wanted somewhere quiet and unspoilt. It was then we discovered and bought these three old "cortijos" or Moorish cottages and started to re-build and repair them. This is a labour of love and seemingly a never ending project. We continue to plant fruit trees and develop the garden which now includes a vineyard. We also love walking and the beauty of these cortijos is that they are located in the national park and there are many wonderful walks you can start straight from the cortijos without driving anywhere. This is a place full of sunshine, fresh fruit and vegetables and natural beauty that refreshes the spirit. The three Cortijos can house large families and up to 14 people in total.”
Activity and Interests
The historical city of Granada and Alhambra are only an hour away.
The Mediterranean Costa Tropical is totally different from the cost del Sol which is over built. Luckily much of this coast line is designated as the National Park and during the summer months National Park buses will take you down to the beautiful beaches. Salobreña beach is suitable for families with small children and is an hour away. The 'Cabo de Gata National Park' is 2 hours away. Other local beaches include Herradura and Calahonda. For other recommended beaches please see our website.
Almeria and Malaga airports are 2½ hours away and Granada airport 1 hour away. The newly built motorway which goes from Malaga airport to Almeria passes through Motril which is an hour away from Cortijos.
Both the villages of Busquistar and Trevelez are 4km away from the cortijos. Bubion, Pampaniera and Capileria approx 20 minutes away. Orgiva 25km and approximately half an hour drive. Granada is 1 hour away approx.
There are local shops and supermarkets 4km away. The nearest banks are in Trevelez 4 kms away or Pitres some 7km away. There are also many restaurants and bars nearby. Several pizzerias, regional food and many bars serving delicious tapas. Trevelez claims to be the highest village in Spain and is known throughout the world for its cured ham "Jamon Serrano" and offers over 50 bars and restaurants.

“Lovely pool, fresh fruit and vegetables depending on the time of the year. Lovely big oven for baking bread or pizzas... push bikes.... table tennis.... We do not believe that any other property in Sierra Nevada gives you the geographical location and the opportunity to live at 1500 meters and be only an hour from Granada and an hour from the beach and the same time to be so isolated in the heart of the national park.. It is a paradise for small children as there is plenty of ground to run about . They can even make their own camp site below 600 year old chestnut trees and have fun... The three Cortijos can house large families and up to 14 people in total.”
