About the property

Vines and Roses are set amid the vines and recently renovated throughout, Vine Cottage (2 bed) & Rose Cottage (1 bed) can be booked individually or combined into a large 3-bedroom house. They are perfectly situated for exploring the Dordogne or Bordeaux & its coast but only 8 kms from the Medieval wine city of St. Emilion. Architecturally designed within an ancient winemaking barn to provide superb facilities & yet retain the charm of their original beams & stonework. The cottages share an alarmed pool but have their own private terrace or garden & are surrounded by picturesque countryside, beautiful villages and churches. As we live locally, we can organise restaurants, cleaning, baby sitting or deliver superb home cooked meals. We take guests on wine tours so you do not need to drive and we do historic walking tours. Alternatively just take the bikes and explore on your own.

About Andrew Okell

We are English, we moved to France in 2003 & we run the properties for a living. I have a keen interest in history & wine which we decided to combine into wine & historic walking tours. My partner is a foodie who loves to cook, hence the catering. The cottages are built into a 18th century wine making barn. We designed Vines & Roses ourselves & we used only local craftsmen for the building & furnishings. We hope to offer a stress free holiday with almost anything you could want including baby sitting, cleaning & transport. As a result we now have many guests who return again & again. Our full day escorted wine tour had been a fantastic success. The French language was been a challenge until we decided to relax & admit that we would always sound like the policeman from “Allo Allo”.

The perfect break

  • 5 of 5

We were delighted with all aspects of Vine Cottage - full of character, and full of thoughtful little touches from our hosts Andy and Richard. The welcome pack of wine, beer, bread, milk etc was much appreciated, as was the welcome meal, and the supply of home made cake during the week. It felt very 'homely' with magazines, pictures, cushions and bits and pieces in the kitchen, and the bathroom was particularly luxurious with its lovely wet room area (as well as a full bath, which I like). The shared pool area was a delight, as was the little gazebo in our private garden. Our aim was to do absolutely nothing but soak up the sun with plenty of books and plenty of French wine and cheese by a quiet pool, and that is exactly what was provided. There are a number of excellent restaurants nearby, which we didn't visit because we were so happy where we were. St Emilion, so close by, is of course the heart of the most wonderful wine region and a beautiful place to visit. We will certainly return, and perhaps aim to do a little more next time. Or perhaps not!

Well Worth the Stay

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. It was keenly priced, clean, comfortable and wifi worked fine. Great walks through the vine fields on the door step and St Emillion is only a 10 minute drive away.

Andy is a fine host.

Excellent cottage/apartment/gist in the vines

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I are recently retired and decided that we would like to spend one to two months in the Bordeaux area of France. Impressed with the many favorable reviews for Vines and Roses, we decided that these cottages were worth a closer look. Fortunately, we were in Spain this past October (2016) and would have a chance spend a week at Vines and Roses after our Spain tour ended. This would give us a chance to check facility out personally, and we were glad we did because we had a marvelous stay.

We arrived late at night and a delicious meal awaited us including a lovely bottle of local wine, French bread, cheese, onion soup, and beef bourguignon. It was all delicious. We spent the next week getting to know as much as possible about the area. We found that there are so many things to see, we felt we only had time to scratch the surface in our one week stay. Moreover, Andy was extremely helpful from first to last with excellent local information and a fun sense of humor.

We could not have asked for more from our accommodations. The kitchen was well equipped, the bed was very comfortable, the guidebooks in the cottage were very helpful, and due to a late harvest, the grapes were hanging heavily on the vines only a stone’s throw from the front door. The cottage was well stocked with necessities including some laundry soap that my wife claimed got her clothes the brightest they have ever been. All in all we had a great time and are currently planning our return for a much longer stay.

My wife and I would give Vines and Roses six stars, but five stars is the highest allowed, so our rating will only show as a five. Vines and Roses truly exceeded our expectations.
