Holiday Cottage, Sherford, South Devon - The Perfect Place to Unwind in the Heart of the South Hams

Daisy Cottage is a lovingly presented, stone built reverse-level, 3-bedroom 2-bathroom holiday cottage with full gas central heating, wifi and satellite TV. With its own delightful south-facing terrace with enchanting views and bbq facilities, Daisy provides the ideal self-catering base for a relaxing family holiday. The cottage is located at Stancombe Manor in the delightful South Hams area of south Devon known for its green, rolling countryside, outstanding coastline, superb sailing waters and family-friendly beaches (the nearest being only a few minutes drive away). The superb leisure facilities at the Manor available to visitors to Daisy Cottage include an indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, tennis court, wood-panelled full size snooker room, pitch and putt golf, children's play area and a games room with pool and table tennis tables. Stancombe Manor, with its manicured gardens and grounds, lies in a secluded, sunlit valley close to the head of the Salcombe Estuary near the village of Sherford, with its 13th century church and thatched cottages. There are several wonderful pubs within easy each and the bakery/general stores at nearby Frogmore caters for daily needs. Well behaved dogs are welcome (maximum two).

Why Karin Moncrieff chose South Hams

David spent his childhood holidays in the South Hams area of Devon - so when we decided to buy a holiday cottage there was nowhere else to look! As soon as we saw Stancombe Manor nestling in its sunlit valley only a stone's throw from the Kingsbridge Estuary we knew it was 'our place'. Our happiest times with family and friends have been spent at Daisy Cottage. With the pool, the tennis court and the games room the kids were always fully occupied - even in bad weather. Nowadays both Catherine and Jamie (23 and 22 years old) return to the cottage independently with their own friends - a testament to the golden memories they have built in this enchanted place,

What makes this cottage unique

Situated in the upper part of the Stancombe grounds, Daisy Cottage has it's own private, south-facing terrace. Conveniently close to the tennis court and the children's play area, many visitors have said we have the best position at the Manor.

Notes on accommodation: This cottage is great for families, but is equally well suited for adult groups wanting to get away for walking or other outdoor activities, such as golf or fishing. Short breaks are welcome outside main school holidays. Outside: Directly outside is a private dining terrace. Guests are also welcome to use the extensive grounds of the Manor which are shared with other guests. There is a barbecue adjacent to the cottage. The shared swimming pool is indoor and fully heated. It has changing rooms, a deep end with enough depth for diving, a sauna and shower. The tennis court is just below Daisy Cottage. The pitch and putt golf and the children's play area are nearby. Utility Room: Washing machine. Tumble dryer. Chest freezer. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Cleaning and bedlinen inclusive within price, but no towels provided (please bring bath and swimming towels)

Beautiful surrounds and cottage, not great access

As the other review, Daisy Cottage at Stancombe Manor is in a lovely area of the South Hams with great views across the countryside, very picturesque and lovely and quiet. The only let down is beyond the owners control, and that is the hair raising access to the property! I strongly do not recommend, as we did, taking a small camping trailer to this property - single track country lanes with high sides and poor visibility. There are several passing places but even for an experienced driver, it's pretty awful, and those who are older or less experienced would find it a struggle to be fair.

That aside the cottage offers everything and is located in beautiful surrounds with a tennis court, small pitch and putt, games room and snooker room (both the latter could do with a bit of a lift as the cloth on the snooker table very worn and tired, and the equipment for table tennis a bit tired too - of course you could take your own!) and plenty of walking areas - perfect for families with dogs, we took two and both were very worn out by the end of the holiday.

The area itself is very nice but things are quite far apart - a mile or two here or there if you are on a motorway isn't far, but in the country it can seem like a distance. Car is essential as apart from the walk into Sherford, the nearest shop (Ashby's on the A379) is a 6 mile round trip. We found the area a little 'boring' and exhausted it very quickly but again this isn't anything that can be blamed on the owner.

In summary it was a nice holiday in nice surrounds with a lovely cottage to return to each day. We would visit again but not with a trailer, but also not straight away as the area can be exhausted within a week very easily.

Owner's Response: We are delighted that our guests found Daisy Cottage comfortable and welcoming and are grateful for their kind words about the house and Stancombe Manor. However, we are slightly startled by their comments about the Devon lanes. Stancombe is situated in a rural part of the South Hams and the roads via which it is accessed are, in part, the sunken lanes with high, flower-strewn banks that are typical of the area. In 14 years we have not had anything but positive feedback on our location but we are sorry that these particular guests found the driving conditions uncomfortable. We have been holidaying in this part of South Devon for more than 20 years at every stage in our family life and invariably leave feeling we haven't been able to fit in everything we wanted to do and see. The number of repeat bookings we receive suggests that very many of our guests share this view. We are sad that this reviewer did not. To us, South Devon is second to none in providing a perfect base for a successful and relaxing holiday. But always allow a little time to meander through the enchanting lanes!

Great place to stay

I can't recommend Daisy Cottage, on the Stancombe estate, highly enough.

We arrived in March, and found ourselves staying in a modern, warm, clean and very cosy cottage, nestled on the edge of the valley, with the best view and outlook of all the holiday cottages, down across the picturesque Stancombe estate. The south facing terrace is ideal for enjoying a glass of two of wine (even in March!), looking at the rolling hills and enjoying total silence broken only by the birdsong and sheep in a field across the lane way.

With easy access to Kingsbridge and Salcombe and great amenities but hidden away off the beaten track, this cottage is a great place to spend a holiday.

And don't miss the beautiful walk from the Stancombe estate down to the picturesque hamlet of Sherford (in the corner of the car park, past the Manor House), a walk with no sounds or signs of 21st century life!

Although we stayed in the spring, the cottage has a very effective central heating system so was warm and cosy and the availability of an indoor heated swimming pool means an off season break is as enjoyable as a high season break.

A great find in a beautiful and peaceful area of Devon.

Location

Coast/Beach:

There are many beaches in the South Hams area and it is worth exploring to find your own preference, depending on whether you prefer sand or shingle, small coves or large beaches, etc. Choices range from Bantham (great for surfing, sandy - 20 mins), the huge stretch from Torcross along Slapton Leys (shingle - 5 mins), Hope Cove (small, sandy - 15 mins) and Blackpool Sands (beautiful clean water sports - 20 mins). The splendid South West Coastal path can be accessed throughout the area.

Travel:

Nearest airports are Exeter (38 miles) or Plymouth (20 miles). Plymouth of course also has ferry terminals to France/Spain. Nearest railway is Totnes (14 miles) with inter city links to London Paddington. Motorway connections to midlands via M5 or south east/central via M4 or A303 and then on the Devon Expressway (A38). It is essential to have the use of a car at this location.

Distances:

Sherford half a mile, and within a mile there is Frogmore at the end of the estuary with a pub and bakery (fresh bread every morning!). Salcombe, Kingsbridge, Thurlestone, Dartmouth and Totnes and villages in between are all extremely accessible and within easy reach.

Further Details:

As far as eating out, there is lots to choose from. Our own personal favourites are The Sloop at Bantham (good pub food in convivial surroundings), The Cricket Inn at Beesands (excellent food, especially fish) and the Village Inn at Thurlestone (cosy). The Crabshell at Kingsbridge (sit outside and look over the estuary). The little village of Southpool only a couple of miles from Frogmore is an archetypal Devon village and with a creekside setting – excellent pub called the Millbrook, too. For a real splurge do try the Tower at Slapton – well worth it! Or if you really want to treat yourself we would thoroughly recommend Buckland Tout-Saints Hotel, a delightful manor house hotel about 8 minutes drive from Stancombe (tel: 01548 853055) where the set dinner is about £30 - or you can have a cream tea on the terrace there and play croquet on the lawn! Just up the road from Stancombe at East Allington is the Fortescue Arms – a lovely cosy village pub catering well for families as well as delicious a la carte meals (tel: 01548 521215). In Salcombe, there are any number of really good places to eat overlooking the water and it is just a matter of wondering around and seeing what appeals. Further along from Salcombe, the South Sands Hotel is a great treat for lunch or dinner. There is a very good Chinese takeaway in Kingsbridge which delivers to Stancombe, there is also a pizza delivery restaurant. The best cream tea in the area (in our opinion!) is at the Thurlestone Hotel – to be combined with a brisk walk along the cliffs! Recently added for cream tea or light lunch/supper combined with a coastal walk is Gara Rock - absolutely stunning panoramic view from restaurant/cafe. For grocery shopping, there is Morrisons and Tesco supermarkets in Kingsbridge, as well as a fantastic local shop (Ashbys) which sell a wide range of locally sourced foods. Tesco does deliver.
