About the Owner

Jenny & Vic Twist used to live in Oxford and retired to Spain in 2001. Jenny writes fiction and Vic is a very keen walker. Vic is always happy to advise guests on good walks in the area and there is plenty of walking information available in the apartment.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The apartment is beautiful, you have thought of everything and the extra touches such as the fresh flowers, herbs and wine made it all the more special. I'm sure we will be back and will certainly recommend this spot of paradise to family & friends. Martin & Alison, Manchester.

Thank you so much for all your kindness and generosity. The spectacular setting coupled with glorious weather, oh and absolute peace and stillness have helped two stressed-out teachers unwind, relax and indulge in real 'quality time' which is often hard to find. We have thoroughly enjoyed the company and 'home-from-home' atmosphere you create so well. It's been - in a nutshell - just perfect. Jane and Andria.

Absolute gem

  • 5 of 5

Recently had 8 days here and have to say enjoyed every minute (apart from the problem with the car). Jenny and Vic made us feel completely at home from the moment we pulled up. The apartment is excellent. It has everything you need and more. It is clean, tidy and spacious. Outside there are numerous places to enjoy the weather and to eat , sit or sunbathe, and the views from the house are spectacular, particularly watching the sun at different times of day on mount Moroma. Vic and Jenny are a mine of information on the area and we had a super walk with Vic, Stubbsy and Tess (who is perhaps the nicest dog in Spain) around the hills above Solares. The area is great for exploring the mountains and still only a 30 minute drive down to the coast, so you can enjoy the best of everything.

Thanks for helping us out with our car problem, you really went above and beyond the call of duty, and the Lasagne Vic made that night was the best we have ever tasted.

We will definitely return to the area sometime in the future and look forward to renewing our membership of the RTMC

All the best for the future

Little piece of heaven!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous week in Casa Joya and once we got over our fear of the mountain roads (actually got into 4th gear at one stage!!), the whole experience was just incredible. There is everything you could possibly desire for a week away from it all up in the mountains, not only was our little guest house an adorable little abode, but we were made welcome by Vic and Jenny as if it was home from home. Of course I have to say the main hosts were Tess and Amy :) If we thought we were missing our furry kids at home, Tess and Amy made up for that. Their home greeting certainly matched our pets at home. It just made our holiday! But seriously it was a pleasure to meet Jenny and Vic and enjoy the odd beer or two and of course compare Gamba pil-pil! Fantastic. The surrounding villages were friendly, the food was fabulous and they were a joy to visit. We ventured to a few and had a good look around, it was indeed an adventure. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend your mountain hide-away to anyone. Although we'd say bring a jeep :) Thank you Vic and Jenny and a big hug for Tess and Amy. Who knows maybe we'll see you soon xxx

What a lovely week we had. Perfect hosts. Perfect place. Courtyard was a cascade of greenery lovingly tended by Vic. The aromas were fantastic.

Hiked for miles on the mountain terrain. Just fabulous scenery. We will definitely be back.

walker's dream

We had a lovely week walking for miles in the daytime and enjoying the peace and solitude in the evening after returning exhausted. There was always a smile and a warm greeting from our hosts whenever we saw them.

Nothing was too much trouble for them. We will be back next year for more exploration of the wonderful countryside.

if you want a peaceful holiday just pack a bag and go and stay at Jenny and Vic's idyllic retreat.. even the birds are quiet..you will be made to feel welcome instantly, no matter what time of day you arrive..

You can mix or just have your own space as they both leave you completely alone unless you actually want their company..you can walk with Vic and/or Tess their dog if you wish or just sit and do nothing and let the stress fade away..the best week in Spain for many years..the Wyatt family.

My partner, Paul and I stayed at Casa Joya in July with our 17 year old twins. We have travelled to many different countries and stayed all over Spain, but, I have to say, our holiday to Casa Joya was by far our favourite. It is very hard to describe the absolute peace, tranquillity and beauty of the place ? you have to actually see it all to really appreciate it.

The lovely greeting we received upon arrival from the owners, Jenny and Vic was warm and welcoming and they made us feel so at home. They are always there for anything you need and will also enjoy a beer or a glass of wine with you, sharing their fascinating stories of their life in this beautiful place. Also, we can?t forget Tess the dog and Amy the cat. I have to say, little Tess was the most loving, friendly, gorgeous little doggie ever ? and the fittest 11 year old dog I?ve ever seen who just loves to play ball lol. We all miss her :)

We booked the Casa Joya because of the photos and description on Owners Direct, but, neither of these actually does it justice. For the nine days we were there, it was our little bit of Heaven. The apartment is beautiful and homely, immaculately clean with every comfort and convenience you need, but also with that extra special something. We had our own patio complete with tables, chairs and sun loungers and the beautiful pool was perfect...and all ours for nine whole days. The views are to die for ? absolutely stunning...the best I have ever seen in Spain.

The village of Canillas is a about a 10 minute drive away. The views and scenery on that drive are beautiful and the village is so quaint and very Spanish - here you will find everything you need. Sedella is also a beautiful little village and slightly nearer in the opposite direction. We also went to Nerja beach for the day which was lovely, and again, the scenic mountain drive to get there through Competa, down towards Sayalonga was amazing.

We didn?t eat out very often because of the comfort, homeliness and ease of eating in the apartment. We also enjoyed a lovely evening meal on more than one occasion with the lovely Jenny and Vic. I have to add that for the first time ever at the end of a holiday, Paul didn?t want to leave. Casa Joya has definitely won our hearts ? it?s a time and a place we will never forget.

Please don?t look elsewhere, just book the Casa Joya......it?s AMAZING.

Thank you Jenny and Vic for everything and we will definitely be seeing you again :) xxxx

From the Owner

We love the views of mountains and sea, and the solitude. And we love the mountain villages. The people here are very old-fashioned. They still call each other ‘Sir’ & ‘Madam,’ even when they’ve known each other all their lives. The way of life here has only changed superficially. These people are still basically peasant farmers. Each one has his land and is to a greater or lesser extent self-sufficient. Many keep goats and chickens. Modern technology is just a thin veneer over the ancient way of life. It is not unusual to see a typical Andalusian farmer riding his mule and speaking into his mobile phone as he goes along. They still plough the land above our house with a mule. It is too steep for modern mechanical ploughs.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Malaga at 50 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : Canillas de Aceituno at 5 Kilometres Nearest Ferry : Malaga at 50 Kilometres Nearest Train : Malaga at 50 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : Velez Malaga at 15 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Canillas de Aceituno at 5 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Torre del Mar at 25 Kilometres Car: recommended

The nearest beach is at Torre del Mar, a typically Spanish resort – a drive of about 30 min. Nerja, with its lovely bay and nearby caves, is less than an hour's drive. Maro, a little further east, has beautiful, unspoilt and often deserted coves.

Málaga airport is about an hour's drive away and Granada about one and three quarter hours. Both are serviced by budget airlines. The greater distance to Granada is offset by its much smaller size and subsequently shorter queues. Car hire is recommended, as this is a very isolated spot.

The nearest village is Canillas de Aceituno, about 10 minutes drive. Sedella is about 15 minutes' drive. Both have shops, bars and restaurants. There is a very large shopping centre at Vélez Málaga, about 25 minutes drive. Màlaga city, about an hour's drive away, has a thriving night-life, ancient monuments and museums, including the famous Picasso Museum. Within day trip range is Granada with its fabulous Alhambra Palace and Córdoba with its famous mosque and ancient Moorish palace.

Further Details:

This part of Spain has good weather all year round. The winter months are cooler, wetter and less predictable, but most days are warm and sunny. An excellent time of year for walkers. Nights can be cold (but the temperature has only dropped below 5º once in the 12 years we have lived here, and then only for a couple of nights). The apartment is centrally heated and the cost is included in the price. There are scenic drives offering the opportunity to visit delightful white villages with steep narrow streets decorated with flowers, vines and jasmine. The nearest coastal town is half an hour's drive away. Further to the east there is the attractive resort of Nerja with its awe-inspiring Tolkienesque caves. Further east still are unspoilt rocky coves, deserted at certain times of year. Málaga town is well worth exploring, with its cathedral, fortress, castle and museum. Within day trip range is Granada with its fabulous Alhambra Palace and Córdoba with its famous mosque and ancient Moorish palace. The owners are happy to advise on walks, scenic drives and restaurants.Although the apartment is attached to the owner's house, it is very private and the owners do not intrude. The apartment is provided with information on local walks and Mr Twist, a keen walker himself, is available to help and advise.

From the Owner

For us the main benefits are that Vic has almost infinite opportunities for walking. And virtually anywhere you choose to go has spectacular views. We both love the solitude. I am a writer and it means a lot to me to have no distractions. On a larger scale, we enjoy the huge variety of interesting places to visit. This area was the last stronghold of the Moors and there are so many wonderful buildings to see. Most of the church towers were originally mosques and some still retain the Moorish brickwork. This is an excellent base for visiting Malaga, Granada and Cordoba. One unusual feature of the property is that it has proper central heating. Anyone who has visited Spain in the winter will know that, however warm and sunny the days may be, it can be very cold at night.
