Country House in Orgiva, Las Alpujarras, Andalucia - Spectacular Views of Mountains and Greenery - Large, Comfortable House with Wow-Factor Living Space

Cortijo Caliz is a 200 year old, spacious country house with loads of character. It is truly unique and, we think, a bit different from most old houses here - more spacious and light, partly due to the high chestnut-beamed ceiling in the main living room and also the south facing sun-filled entrance hall. This lovely house is comfortably furnished and simply but stylishly decorated to make the most of the light airy rooms.

In the four years we've been letting the house we have had several 4-star reviews (see Trip Advisor: Cortijo Caliz, Ref 113704) and this is largely to do with the comfort and privacy that this holiday home affords. We are confident that anyone would love this house, we have refurbished it with style and filled it with lovely furniture, some modern and some antique, with Moroccan and Spanish influences. The emphasis is on comfort, but this is a stylish house with a wow factor - the large double-height living room with a galleria running along two sides overlooking this bright airy room. A large group can relax in comfort here and enjoy the TV, or the wood burner in the evening, or just the view through the french windows to the mountains.

The house sits in half an acre of cyprus, olive and almond trees stretching across three terraces. On the lower terrace, partly secluded by trees and shrubs, is the 9m (30ft) swimming pool with spacious stone terrace, perfect for sunbathing or relaxing in the shade. There are sun loungers and umbrellas but for most of the day there is shade in one perfect spot, under the old olive tree.

We have spent a lot of time and care creating the beautiful gardens. From the formal entrance garden to the stone path with pretty fountain, and on down to the pool terrace, you will be surrounded by flowers and colourful shrubs. Oleander, hibiscus and bougainvilia bring colour, and the jacaranda and olive trees lend softness and shade. There are 125 trees in all, some of the olives are hundreds of years old.

The living room has a large sofa, chaise-longue and enough armchairs for everyone to relax in comfort. On the mezzanine level next to the living room is the raised dining area which seats 10 comfortably for more formal dining. From there through double doors to the large kitchen with breakfast table, ample work surfaces and plenty of room for group cooking and companionship. There's a pantry and stacks of cupboard space, plus a generous supply of cooking utensils, so if you like to cook you'll be at home.

From the kitchen you walk directly out onto the main south facing patio where there are spectacular views of the southern mountains, with enough shade to ensure comfort even in the middle of the day. There's a sofa and chairs, a BBQ and large Spanish style table for 10. Everything you'll need for perfect al fresco evenings.

The bedrooms are comfortably furnished with good mattresses and the best linens (John Lewis). Some of the rooms have antiques or Moroccan influenced built in cupboards and closets. The bathrooms are bang up to date with good plumbing, including efficient overhead showers and plenty of solar heated water. All five bedrooms are comfortable and stylish. Bedrooms 1 and 2 are the master bedrooms, both are ensuite and have french windows leading onto outdoor terraces.

The house sits in a sheltered hollow, hence the name Caliz meaning chalice, and is about 5 minutes drive from the village. Nestling on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada there are fantastic views in every direction. It is truly a perfect spot.

About the Owner

Tina & Alan - came to Spain in March 2008, having planned for a year to retire here. Tina, a graphic designer, worked in advertising/design, and Alan was a private hire driver. Both animal lovers, we arrived with 2 cats but the 'family' has grown. We love the life here and the days are full. There's a big expat community here and we have made many friends. We want to live creative lives and have run courses here with plans to do more. The garden is an ongoing project and every year sees more planting and new ideas being fulfilled. We are both avid readers and the holiday house is filled with books. We are living the perfect life in many ways even though the Alpujarra continues to be full of challenges.

Beautiful Villa with breathtaking views. We stayed with our 2 adult daughters, their partners and 3 grandchildren.

Tina and Alan were very helpful via email before the trip. On arrival there was already plenty of food and the accommodation was better than expected.

3 bedrooms had ensuite bathrooms plus there was a 4th bedoroom and 4th bathroom. Unfortunately we had to have the smallest and least luxurious bedroom. The kids needed larger rooms and the ensuite with a bath etc.

The countryside is beautiful. We walked from the Villa northwards on the GR421 towards Lanjaron, and southwards towards the river.

There are plenty of British ex-pats here.

We drove the whole family into town and Granada for Flemenco dresses etc. But hanging by the pool in and around the Villa was the best.

We always knew that when we retired we would come to live in Spain but we were never sure where. Orgiva and the Alpujarra Valley have proved the perfect spot for us, very peaceful and full of character, so unlike the coastal resorts, and a truly Spanish place. All sorts of interesting people have settled here, for good reason - it's a place of great beauty, full of cultural heritage and fantastic landscapes.

Currently we are running arts courses, and also personal development retreats, during the off-peak season. To date we have hosted several courses in personal development, in association with the More to Life Foundation, which is a registered UK charity. These courses have been lead by qualified trainers or teachers.

This winter we are running a Wild Women's Week (a private creative week for a specific group)

Coast/Beach:

Orgiva is in the Alpujarra Valley which is 1500 feet above sea level, an area of outstanding natural beauty and a paradise for walking, cycling and horse riding. The highest mountain in southern Europe, Mulhacen, is walkable for the fit, it takes about 5 hours. Orgiva is 35 mins drive from the Costa Del Sol, the nearest beach is at Motril, but there are many beautiful beaches and interesting resorts including Almunecar (Jazz Festival mid July), La Herradura, and Nerja which has several beaches.

Travel:

Malaga airport is 1 hour 30 mins drive and we can arrange for you to be collected, for approx 75 Euros. We recommend that you have a car as we are 5 mins drive from the centre of Orgiva, however this is not essential if you enjoy walking. Granada Airport is 1 hour away but only BA flies there from London City airport.

Distances:

We are 5 mins (2 kms) drive to Orgiva which is the nearest town, or a 40 minute walk. It is half an hour's drive to Pampaneira and Capileira, two of the highest mountain villages in Spain. Granada, 50 mins drive, is a beautiful cultured city and the famous Alhambra Palace is a must see.

Further Details:

Orgiva is a charming working/market town with all the necessary amenities including supermarkets, banks and a hospital. There are many bars and restaurants and the town's central Plaza really buzzes at night, so there's plenty to do until the early hours, including two discos.

The Alpujarra Valley is famous for its mountain walks and the three highest villages in Spain are half an hours drive from Orgiva - Bubion, Pampaneira and Capilleira are some of Spain's prettiest white villages. They have craft shops and typical Alpujarran restaurants, plus spectacular Sierra Nevada views at every turn.

There is horse riding, hang gliding and bikes for hire. The nearest beach at Motril is just 35 minutes away, but this part of the coast is very unspoilt and resorts like Almunecar (written about by Laurie Lee 60 years ago), Salobrena, La Herradura and the very pretty Nerja, are all close enough for day trips.

Last but not least is Granada, a very elegant and beautiful city, with its Moorish influenced old town and of course the Alhambra and its spectacular gardens and palaces. Not to be missed and an easy day trip from here.

We require a 30% deposit to hold your booking with the balance due 4 weeks before your arrival.
The prices are for renting the whole house. In May/June and September/October we can offer 3 bedrooms for 80% of the prices shown.

Changeover Day:
Changeover day is Saturday but we can be flexible. The property will be ready for you from 4pm, guests should arrive by 10pm latest (exceptions can be made). The property must be vacated by 10am on the day you leave.

Notes on prices:

  • Notes on accommodation: There are a few steps, especially down to the pool, so children need to be supervised. Outside: At the front of the property, facing the mountains, is the beautiful 9 metre swimming pool, very private and surrounded by greenery with large sun terrace, loungers, umbrellas and much needed shade under the old olive tree. The main south facing shady patio (conveniently off the kitchen) overlooks the garden and has spectacular mountain views. It is comfortably furnished with sofa, chairs, BBQ and dining for 10. From here you walk out into the gardens across a stone terraza with shady orange tree and pretty tinkling fountain. The house sits in half an acre of gardens on different levels, filled with flowers and shrubs, shaded by olive and almond trees and linked by stone pathways. The owners live in the adjacent building and are on hand if needed, however you are assured of a very private holiday. They have 4 dogs who occupy a large paddock running along the opposite side of the property. They are very quiet, being happy creatures, and to date there have been no complaints! Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linens and towels are provided weekly, if your stay is two weeks the bedlinen will be changed at the mid point. Everything is clean for your arrival, we maintain a high standard of cleanliness. Catering: we can arrange for someone to shop/cook/clean up. Other: The large bright entrance hall is also a sun lounge, it overlooks the pool and faces south to the fantastic Contra Viesa mountains. From the living room, looking north through the french windows, are the Sierra Nevada. It's 360 degree special!
