Romantic Holiday Cottage in the Forest of Dean

Updated: 27-Oct-2016
Holiday Cottage in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England, UK - Romantic Holiday Let with Forest Walks Right from the Door

Up a forest track, the third of four properties, with forest walks right from the doorstep, The Old Chapel has been sympathetically converted to create an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity. It is situated on the edge of the village of Yorkley (population approx 1,000). The cottage is 80% pine clad (walls and ceilings) giving it a very warm and relaxing feel throughout. It has been furnished to give a 'home from home' feel all in wood and/or neutral colours. The general atmosphere is rustic, mostly wooden floors, a place where you can get in touch with your soul. A really romantic place to escape, leave all your troubles behind and just chill!

About the Owner

I am older than I feel comfortable with. I live with my hubby just 3 miles from Heathrow so we're well used to noisy surroundings. We are both self-employed and work from home, often very long hours. We like eating (with a passion), holidays (don't get enough of them) and a bit of peace and quiet (don't get a lot of that either)!

When we purchased the cottage we were looking for something which felt like home both in terms of comfort and facilities. We wanted it to be within a 2.5 hour drive of London, have a lot of character, have forest on the doorstep and be very relaxing - this place ticked all the boxes!

We have identical twin daughters and one grandchild and I took her for her first walk into the forest when she was 3 months old - it was such a beautiful day)!

Charming Cottage In a Lovely Location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the Old Chapel for 5 nights in mid-June. It is in a quiet location on the edge of the forest. It is very well-maintained and has everything we required to make our holiday relaxing and comfortable. Every amenity we could think of was available. Besides walking the many forest paths right outside the front door, we enjoyed a bike ride and a visit to Mallards Pike, as well as a visit to nearby Puzzlewood and Chepstow Castle. The chapel was conveniently located for us to make separate day excursions to both Stratford-Upon-Avon and Bath, as well. The owner, Doreen, is very pleasant to deal with and really went out of her way, above and beyond, to make our visit as smooth as possible - even so far as to make a trip to Heathrow to find the best route for us to the chapel! We would highly recommend the Old Chapel to others seeking a relaxing get away.

A super relaxing break away cottage.

  • 5 of 5

A really friendly and helpful host. Lots of information provided and instructions within the cottage were easy.

This was a peaceful and well equipped holiday home with every little detail thought of. We loved the open fire the most and the gorgeous window in the gallery bedroom let light in to make it spacious. A great home for a family to get away to with a small drive to Ross on wye / Symmonds Yatt.

We loved it! Thank you.

Peaceful Holiday

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful cottage, very well equipped and so welcoming, even decorated for Christmas. It was warm, clean and comfortable. We especially enjoyed the wood burning stove given the time of year. Nice welcoming letter from Doreen explaining everything. We visited Coleford, Symonds Yat ( unfortunately no Peregrines sighted), Lydney and the pub in the village a few times. And of course walked in the lovely forest. A good holiday all round.

Idyllic refuge

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in this wonderful place for the last few years and will keep repeating the experience! The Chapel is quirky but practical and is so comfortable with the roaring fire. My family queue up to visit when we stay here and we have enjoyed some lovely meals around the large table. The utility area is very useful after wet walks and cycle rides. Doreen the owner has been most helpful and there are always thoughtful touches like chocolates or sweets left for our arrival. The forest is lovely and you can't get much closer to it than this. Thumbs up from me!

Lovely old chapel with direct access to the forest

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely week in the Old Chapel. The location was excellent for direct access to walks in the forest and easy access to the numerous bike routes in the area - and was a pleasant bike ride to the excellent cross country and downhill tracks at Cannop. There are also a few pubs in the village within easy walking distance and lots more a short drive away. The Old Chapel itself was very impressive - extremely spacious and well equipped even including a wood burner for those chilly evenings. Lots to visit in the area and would definitely recommend.

From the Owner

I was born in the Forest of Dean, and lived there until the age of 18 when I left for London, never to return except for... every 3rd weekend for 40 years we've kept going back! We still have friends and family there of course. We live 3 miles from Heathrow and we get door-to-door in 2 hours 20 minutes. When my parents died, we didn't want to sever our ties with the Forest, so we bought The Old Chapel. We no longer need to stay with family there - we've now got our own place where we can entertain and relax. Our whole family love the Forest. We love its peace, its tranquillity, and its people who are very very friendly. The Foresters are very friendly folk and 'what you see is what you get' basically. You'll know when you meet a Forester, they will always stop and chat.

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

The area is great for those who walk, cycle, bird-watch, horse-ride, mountain bike, cycle, or indeed anyone looking for a holiday where they want to 'chill out' in a romantic setting. There are many water activities on the River Wye (a 20 minute drive), you can go llama trekking (2 miles away), cycle through designated forest tracks or even go down a coal mine! Areas of interest include Tintern Abbey, Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood (extraordinary forest scenery where Dr Who and Merlin has been filmed and Tolkien got his inspiration for Middle Earth in Lord of the Rings), the beautiful Wye Valley and Symonds Yat (all these less than a 25 minute drive). The spa towns of Cheltenham and Bath, not to mention the towns of Cardiff and Newport are all within a one hour drive. For those of you with energy, there is a Go Ape 1.5 miles away. The renowned St Pierre golf course is just a 20 minute drive away, and Celtic Manor (Ryder Cup) is a 40 minute drive away. Many more things to do - no space!

The nearest beach is Barry (a one hour drive). You can also visit The Gower Coast which is beautiful (2.5 hours drive), and 2 miles away you will find Mallards Pike, a lake in a beautiful forest setting. It is possible to swim in this lake (but no lifeguards of course). There is a large open-air swimming pool in Lydney (2.5 miles away which is usually open from June through to September.

A car is essential here as public transport is very limited.

The nearest railway station (2.5 miles) is Lydney. The nearest main railway station is Gloucester 30 min drive away. The nearest airport is Bristol 40 min drive away. The guest who travelled the greatest distance to stay at the chapel was a single lady who flew in from Washington DC and got all the way to the Forest by public transport and loved it!

From London Heathrow 2¼ hours. From Cheltenham 1 hour's drive. From Stratford 1¼ hour's drive. From Cardiff: 1 hour's drive. From Wales ½ hour's drive. Frin the Wye Valley: 20 mins' drive.

Further Details:

There are 2 convenience shops in the village along with a medical centre. There are 2 pubs. The first pub (a 3 min walk) needed updating 60 years go, but here you find very good pub grub at very reasonable prices (Sunday lunch: roast meat and 8 veg, plus 12 home-made puddings). The other pub, an 8 minute walk has entertainment of some kind about 3 nights a week. There is a large supermarket (Tesco) 3 miles away which is open daily until 10 pm. There is a 24 hour Tesco 12 miles away in Chepstow. The nearest bank is in Lydney 2.5 miles. There are many restaurants in the Forest, details are in the brochure in the cottage.

From the Owner

From the minute we arrive, it spells 'relaxation' - which we hardly get at home. What do we like? The extensive wood pannelling, the original wooden floors, the brick window sills, the log-burner, the very high ceilings and the feeling of space this gives, the gothic chandelier, the galleried bedroom with its beamed ceiling, the courtyard garden (I can sit out and read at night), the fact that the cottage is up a small lane, and then woodland. We also like the fact that because the lounge windows are about 10-12 foot high, you are not aware of other properties around you. You can sit in the lounge by the fire with direct views over the Forest. I could go on and on and on and on! Night-time in the cottage is, for me, one of the best times to enjoy its beauty.

  • Notes on accommodation: It is advisable to contact the owner if you wish to bring young children. The property is not wholly child-friendly, but we can discuss possible problems and you can decide if this property would suit your child. Outside: There is a small courtyard garden with table and 6 chairs and umbrella. There are also 4 La Fuma type lounging chairs and a BBQ. The rear garden is lit, so it is possible to read outside at night. Although the garden is small, the forest is literally 'on the doorstep'. You have the most amazing scenery just outside the door. There is a garden bench at the front of the cottage, where you can sit with a drink (or two) and just relax - my favourite place to sit when it gets dark! (The front of the cottage is also lit with soft lighting and it is this which gives it the atmosphere at night. Ten steps from the front door, and you can walk straight out into the forest. Utility Room: The large utility room at the back houses the oil boiler, a washing machine and tumble dryer. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Rental includes bed linen, towels and tea towels, plus an introductory basket of logs for the woodburner with firelighters and kindling wood. Other: The galleried bedroom is unsuitable for young children.
