About the property

Cottages in Glastonbury, Somerset, England, UK - Peaceful Location, Beautiful Views, Thatched Farmhouse Ideally Situated

Old Farm was built in 1345 by the monks of Glastonbury Abbey as a resting place for pilgrims. The farmhouse and the traditional farm buildings are English Heritage 2* status putting them in the top 5% of all listed buildings in the UK. They have now been subject to an award winning restoration around the original thatched house.

The Cider House forms part of the former medieval farmyard is a lovely two bedroom cottage full of original features. This is a unique place, there's something about it's age, over 600 years old, it's beautiful position and it's direct historical link to Glastonbury abbey that makes it very restful.

Guests are welcome to use the fields around the farm. There is a pond (unfenced) and outstanding views to Glastonbury Tor and across to Wells Cathedral. Old Farm is a family home and we have Arthur the donkey, 'Naughty' Laddie a shetland, the ever friendly Tori dog, moorhens and sheep (9 at last count!) all of which enjoy the company of our visitors.

Perfect for either a relaxing countryside break or a more active holiday. There is a wealth of activites in the area suitable for all the family includng Longleat Safari Park, Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Hole, Glastonbury Abbey, Quadbiking, Horse Riding, aswell as a huge range of alternative therapies. About Richard Evans

We moved to Somerset from just South of London in 2000, to get more space and a gentle place for our children to grow in.

The farm was completely derelict when we bought it and I guess it has been my hobby ever since to restore it and give it a 'reason to be' in the 21st century

Richard Evans purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Richard Evans chose West Pennard

It is beautiful, calm and peaceful and has stunning views to Glastonbury Tor to the west and Wells City & Mendips to the North.

It sits in 8 acres of our land which has our newly established 'rare breed' cider apple orchard, our sheep, Arthur the Donkey, Laddie the Shetland and of course our lovely bees!

What makes this cottage unique

Well, you have to say its history: Old Farm dates from 1345, was originally owned by Glastonbury Abbey and is steeped in history and spirituality. To give you some perspective, 30 Kings and Queens have presided over Old Farm.

The Cider House, which we converted to accommodation in 2008 is around 250 years old and still has the original Cider Press in the Living room.

Totally Wowed- Wonderful Experience

  • 5 of 5

My parents and my husband and I stayed in Richard's Cider House Farm recently and had an absolutely unforgettable experience. When we first arrived, we were so pleased that it was even more stunning than the pictures showed. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom was great, and the location couldn't be beat. We enjoyed walks in the countryside, close proximity to a pub, a short drive into town for restaurants and sites, visiting with Richard and meeting the darling donkey and pony there,(Arthur and Naughty Laddie), Torrie the dog, and walking through the orchard on site. We loved picking wild blackberries and eating them with our lemon curd and yogurt. Overall, I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

This was a wonderful location to use as a launchpad for us to experience Bath, Stonehenge, Avesbury, Wells, and Cardiff (Wales). I'll be dreaming about the country life at 1345 Old Farm for years to come! And hopefully, we can bring our children back to share the experience soon.

The Cider House is a great place and a fantastic location.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed there for a few days over the Easter Holidays. It's a great cottage and our kids loved it too. The location is perfect for Glastonbury and the surrounding area.

Richard was very welcoming and the kids enjoyed feeding naughty Laddie and Arthur. They really took to Tori the dog who was great!

We look forward to returning in the future. Thanks again. Iona, Raj, Finlay and Rekha.

Tranquil old cottage with lovely views

  • 5 of 5

We stayed there with our son, his wife and their two children. Good accommodation, 3 miles from Glastonbury. There were Great Crested Newts laying eggs in the pond just outside the front door at night, and our grandchildren loved feeding carrots to the donkey and pony in the day. A get away-from-it holiday. Eat at the 100 Monkeys Café in Glastonbury!

Relaxing Rural Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Cider House Cottage was the most magical experience for our whole family. Nestled in the Somerset countryside with beautiful sunsets and a magical view of Glastonbury Tor, the property has been lovingly and authentically restored to recapture its ancient charm and character but with all the modern conveniences one might need. The beds were nothing short of heavenly and the wood-burning stove made for cosy evenings in. With his attentiveness, local knowledge and warmth, Richard made us entirely welcome, helped in no small part by Tori his gorgeous hound, with whom we all fell in love, Arthur , the donkey, and Laddie, the Shetland Pony. We picked apples in the orchard (helped by Arthur and Laddie!) and blackberries from the lane and cooked up a delicious Cider House Cottage Crumble accompanied by a tasty bottle of pure home-pressed apple juice courtesy of Old Farm. We would highly recommend Cider House Cottage to anyone wanting a relaxing rural retreat. We'll be back!
