About the property

Country House nr. Pyrenees, secluded, Heated Pool. Perfect for Tour de France 2018 & Jazz in Marciac, Golf nearby. Shops etc 5 mins.

"La Borde de Clouzet" was once part of a 15th century Chateau complex, part of whose walls still exist in the garden and whose floodlit chapel stands behind the house. The house looks out over lawns, with shrubs and rose bushes, towards fields, hills and the splendour of the Pyrenees, an hour away.

A bridge by the pond, with waterlilies, frogs, fish and a fountain, leads to a further area planted with fruit trees and shrubs. The tiled terrace is shaded by mulberry trees and leads to the covered summer kitchen area with a large mosaic table, chairs for at least 8, a sofa and the Outback gas BBQ, all adjacent to the 10m x 5m heated swimming pool, which has its own shower and can be floodlit at night.

With Wifi reception throughout, guests can access their email and favourite social networks from the comfort of all the rooms as well as beside the pool or in the summer kitchen. Inside the house, a well stocked library, UK Satellite television on a large flatscreen TV, a Windows 7 laptop for use by guests, the fully equipped and stocked kitchen, the paintings and furniture - which mix the antique with the contemporary - reflect the fact that this is the owners' second home. So, of course, does the practice bunker in the grounds!

Children are catered for with various games and a large box of toys from which to choose and a nearby sports complex (Les Vallons du Lac) has a boating lake, tennis, crazy golf, swings and slides etc. as well as a restaurant from which parents can survey their more energetic offspring!

Upstairs, the vast master bedroom suite has its own bathroom and separate loo, the red bedroom has its own bathroom and the green bedroom shares its bathroom with the 4th bedroom. With its thick walls, the house is a cool retreat from the sun and many of the bedroom windows, with fly screens, may be left open at night if desired. There are also fans in all the bedrooms.

Within a radius of 10-12 kms there's a big variety of restaurants at very reasonable prices (especially at lunchtime) and the House Book makes a few suggestions. There are many attractive bastides (fortified villages) in the area, with Mielan and Tillac being amongst those nearby. Mirande, with its 4 supermarkets (incl. both Aldi and Lidl) and large weekly market is just 15 mins away, Pallanne golf course is 12 mins and the mountains and beautiful valleys of the Pyrenees are about an hour away. And, of course, Spain is just across the border, an hour and a half away.

What we love about our house is the way it combines its beams and sense of history with its practicable, easy access to everything. Set in the rolling contours of the S. Gers, almost on the border of the Hautes Pyrenees, it's private but not isolated and we can often hear the cowbells of a local farmer moving his cattle.

It's deeply relaxing and yet, with the Marciac Jazz Festival, Mirande's Country & Western, the cavalcade of the Tour de France every year as well as many other local festivals, exhibitions and evening markets, you'll be spoilt for a choice between a day by the pool, or an exploratory tour of a wine producing chateau, the observatory at the 2877m Pic du Midi de Bigorre, a visit to prehistoric caves or a visit to Lourdes, followed maybe by the falcons, owls and vultures in the Arreau.

The house is just 30 minutes from the A64 motorway and an hour and a half from either Toulouse or Pau airports and their connections to all major European cities. We look forward to welcoming you to an unspoilt corner of France where you can put your feet up and relax in soft, warm and decidedly comfortable surroundings.

Husband and wife, Alan Cook and Elisabeth Guinness (both fluent French speakers) spent some time travelling around France before finding their ideal second home some 6 years ago.

Elisabeth owns the Guinness Gallery in Dublin and Alan, a retired management consultant, is chairman of a major theatrical and literary agency. Their interests include cooking, gardening, Bridge and golf.

Notes on accommodation: Pool is fenced with lockable gate, but Gascon pond is open and younger children would need supervision. The master bedroom and bathroom are extremely large and form a separate suite. Other bedrooms are normal size. The spacious hall incorporates a downstairs loo and wash basin. Pets may well be allowed upon prior consultation. Chess, Scrabble, Boules, cards and a few other games are stored in the base of the bookcase. Tourist literature and House Book with restaurant recommendations etc are on the table in the hall. Guests are welcome to make use of the drinks trolley, tea, coffee and other basics on a replace with like basis. With thick walls, shutters and marble type tiles, the house is refreshingly cool in summer. Outside: Main access to property through iron gates, with gravel drive and gascon pond. Bridge to upper garden with shrubs and fruit trees. Main garden area is lawn with many shrubs and trees and flower borders. Numerous pot plants on the terrace. There is a large grassed area behind the remains of the old chateau wall where there is a sand bunker and a rough green. There is a fenced 10x5m pool which can be heated and lit at night. The outside dining area (see picture) which adjoins the house comprises a top-of-the range Outback gas-fired BBQ, a Moroccan mosaic dining table with 8 chairs and a large leather settee. The garage, which contains one of the owner's cars, can accommodate a second car. Ample sunbeds and comfortable fold up chairs are provided. A gardener maintains the grounds between lets but may also need to mow the area once during lets. If so, he will liaise re a convenient time. Guests are asked to please water the pot plants in summer to prevent them dying. Utility Room: Washing machine, tumble dryer, sink, and freezer. Garden furniture. Door to workshop. Washing powder/liquid provided. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All towels and linen are included. Property and garden are cleaned and maintained between lettings.Maid service can be arranged at extra cost. Other: Dining room. Seating for 10 at stylish glass dining table next to kitchen and French-windows to patio. Candlesticks and candles for romantic evenings (?)

Beautiful and tranquil

The house, grounds and surroundings are beautiful. The whole place has a homely feel as soon as you arrive, which is exactly how the owners intend. Great size pool for a family. The house is on the edge of a hamlet so the rear looks out on to farm fields and hills which makes for a very peaceful and relaxed stay. Pretty villages and lakes nearby for canoeing. Highly recommended.

Charming property ideal for family holiday

We had a very enjoyable stay in this charming house, along with another family. Both of us have young children, who enjoyed the spacious garden and using the swimming pool. There is ample room in the house, so that people are not treading on each other's toes. It's a beautiful setting in the quiet French countryside. It's 1 5-10 min drive to a small town with basic shops. We found activities within 1 hour's drive for the kids to do, including horse-rising and visiting a falconry, though they were more than happy to be by the pool/ garden most of the time. We would highly recommend this beautiful house.

My Birthday Treat!

What a fantastic birthday treat to spend almost a week at La Borde de Clouzet in May 2015. The house is most comfortable, my bedroom huge as was the beautifully appointed bathroom, and everything, including the sunny weather, lovely garden and good sized heated pool was really ideal. We enjoyed visits to local towns and restaurants and I can thoroughly recommend this property.

Paradise Found!

What a fabulous treat. Peace and tranquility was requested and that's what we got. The house was immaculate, beautifully furnished and equipped, great pool and superb garden. The kids could just run and run. We loved the area too, quite a few excellent restaurants within spitting distance and whilst the surrounding countryside was a joy to explore, the mountains and Spain were only an hours drive. We also visited the Atlantic coast, a 2 hour drive, but we arrived in time for a late breakfast in Biarritz and explored the coastline down to the Spanish border. We returned home tired, but keen to relax by the pool with a bottle of the local wine, which was excellent! Seems we missed the Jazz festival, next year perhaps. We definitely intend to return next year. Thank you for one of our best holidays in years.

The Perfect Holiday Retreat

Having searched for the perfect holiday retreat for five years we came across this small slice of paradise. The listings and photos promised great things from this property all of which were exceeded including the lack of mosquitoes!

With its sweeping views of the Pyrenees and the rolling hills in the foreground, the house was full of character, very private and secluded whilst being only a 5 minute drive from the delightful village of Mielan with all of the necessary amenities, including a choice of three boulangerie and a great butchers!

The house is vast, accommodating and outstandingly equipped. The pick of the rooms, for us, was the outside kitchen and dining area, with its shade, breezes and proximity to the pool; there was little reason to venture elsewhere during the day. Upstairs the four bedrooms and three bathrooms allowed for flexibility and great comfort. The attention to detail, from the welcome upon arrival to the vast kitchen cupboards stocking every utensil and piece of crockery imaginable and the children books and toys made it a home from home.

The gardens were lush and carefully tended and surround the whole house. Aside from the pool area we favoured the huge area in the shadow of the church which provided the boys with an area large enough for cricket, tennis and golf without ever having the worry of a lost ball! The pool is a great size, safely fenced and was always warm!

Nearby Marciac entertained us with its jazz festival, the town of Tarbes was delightful and we especially enjoyed a trip to the Pyrennes to go up the cable car at The Pic du Midi and picnic by the mountain streams in Payolle.

We hope to return again and again.

2 hours drive to Biarritz and the charming resort of St. Jean de Luz, a few kms. from Biarritz.


Biarritz airport 2 hours. Tarbes (Ossun) 45 minutes. Pau 1.25 hours, Toulouse. 1.5 hour, Carcassonne 2 hours. Timings are approx.


Mielan is just 5km and 5 mins. by car for all local amenities. Auch (capital of Le Gers) and Tarbes are both just 40 minutes distant. Marciac home of the second largest International Jazz festival in Europe is only 20 minutes away. This annual event takes place during the first 2 weeks of August. Mirande, 10 minutes drive, hosts it's famous Country Music festival each July, normally 10th to 14th. We display details of many other places of interest on our hall table.

Further Details:

Mielan, just 5 minutes drive, has a small supermarket, restaurant, bars, tabac, take-away Pizza, pharmacy and bank. Trie sur Baise and Mirande (each c 15 mins away) have large supermarkets, Mirande also having a Lidl and a Carrefour. Both Auch and Tarbes are main cities with all conveniences, ditto the more upmarket Pau.

Shops are generally closed between midday and 2pm stay but supermarkets are open. The Casino chain of small shops is open Sunday am; also the Intermarché in Trie. Miélan, Trie and Marciac and Mirande are all 'Bastides' (fortified villages) and are surrounded by numerous others. A DVD (with terrible translation!) on the bastides of the Gers is in the bookcase. "Les Vallons du Lac" , just outside Miélan, is a leisure complex with lots of different activities for childen and it has an excellent restaurant.

One of the delights of the sparsely populated Gers and Hautes Pyrenees depts

(Estampes is almost on the border) is almost traffic free roads, even in summer.

Excursions to chateaux for wine or armagnac tastings can be combined with a

4 course lunch for about 12 euro a head, wine included. A cable car can take one to either Le Pic du Midi or to a scenic tour through the mountains via 'Le Petit Train d'Artouste'. Festivals and evening markets take place throughout

the area in summer and there's even a pig festival in Trie with an English fry up

breakfast! The scenery, with rolling hills, valleys and many rivers is beautiful.

To retreat from the sun, there are 13th century Cistercian abbeys to enjoy and the Cathedral in Auch has outstanding stained glass and carved choir stalls. Spain (with unmanned border) isl about 90 mins away via the hillside

town of Montrejeau whose balcony one can stop by for a panoramic view into the Pyrenees. A trip to Biarritz, Bayonne and St Jean de Luz is also advised via the fairly traffic free A64 or/and via detours into the Bearn and Basque areas.
