Guestbook comments from the owner

We stayed here last August. Despite the weather we had a wonderful holiday. The hosts were welcoming & friendly and we wanted for nothing during our stay. On the not so summery days we lit the real log fire and were happy to chill but were equally keen to get into the pool on the warmer days. The area is peaceful & perfect for sightseing and the local town has just enough to temp you to to live off wine, baguettes & cheese. Well, when in Rome! Peace and Tranquility

  • 5 of 5

Thanks Pip and Gary for a restful week at La Drutiere. We chose it for its isolation from the modern world. No nearby motorways or main roads or towns. The result was a glorious tranquility, especially at night when nothing moved. The lack of light pollution meant glorious views of the Milky Way and the sighting of several shooting stars.

Everyone enjoyed the large grounds and the room to find individual space while still being in visual touch.

We had wonderful lunches in the picnic/barbecue area and even better barbecues every night, even though the weather was a little cool for the time of year.

The kitchen was a great meeting place each morning for staggered breakfasts as different parts of the family rolled out of bed at different times. Everyone enjoyed their rooms but especially Shelley and I. As the bank of mom and dad were funding the whole exercise we thought it reasonable to sit up in the gables with its floor to ceiling Windows and doors. Wonderful views over the countryside by day and the moon and stars by night.

Thanks again Pip and Gary, our amiable hosts

A beautiful and relaxing property in a heart of South Normandy

  • 4 of 5

The property is located in a beautiful and peaceful area South of Argentan. The farmhouse and large garden are excellent for a family or families to relax and enjoy. The 300 year old building had been tastefully updated and furnished to keep the traditional feel but with modern facilities. Generally the property was clean but one of the bedrooms had a lot of cobwebs/spiders behind the wardrobe - while you expect the a few creepy crawlies in an old place, that room could have been cleaner and our eldest moved to another room. However, we really relaxed here and found it spacious and comfortable. The kitchen was well equipped and the living areas were inviting. There were plenty of games and DVDs to enjoy on an evening which made for good fun after a day out or by the pool. We enjoyed the large outside pool during the sunny days but found it very cold, despite it being advertised as heated. It was covered at night but you needed to be brave on most days to jump in. The garden is large and has nice touches for children such as a trampoline and table tennis table which we used and enjoyed. It was a slight surprise to find the owners lived on site as this was not clear from the advertising but that said, we found Gary and Pip to be warm, friendly, helpful and respectful of our privacy, Bobby the puppy was gorgeous too! They provided some really helpful tips on places to visit and were responsive to issues we had when the gas cooker and Internet stopped working. We visited many places around the area, Carrouges Chateau, Sees and Bagnoles De L'Orne were highlights. It is also well located to take day trips to Paris in the East, Mont St. Michel in the West and Honfleur in the North but a car is essential to really exploit and enjoy the area. Be prepared for the toll booths too, there are a few if you travel far and prices range from 1 euro to 17 euros to get through. There are large supermarkets within a few kilometres and the local shops in quaint little village of Bouce five minutes away provide supplies to get by. Overall, we loved the property, not only is it a pleasure to relax in, it is ideal as a base to explore Normandy and spend time relaxing in. We would recommend either one or two families choosing La Drutiere. Thank you Gary and Pip!! Andrew, Debs and the kids x

Owner's Response: Dear Andrew, thank you so much for taking the time to write a review on your stay with us and are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your time at our Farmhouse in La Drutiere and the facilities which are provided. It was so good to see you and your family getting out and about so much and enjoying all the wonderful sites Normandy has to offer. We truly fell in love with the area when we came out here for the first time last June and took over the Gite business in October. We are doing our up-most to ensure our guests enjoy their stay at La Drutiere and are therefore hugely disappointed to hear, that one of our rooms could perhaps have been cleaned better; we would have returned to that room and cleaned away any fresh cobwebs which may have been lurking, if we had been aware of the problem. It really is so difficult in a very old property with beams to keep it totally clear of cobwebs, they really are the bane of our lives :-) you literally can clean them away and 24 hours later they re-appear. With regards to the swimming pool, we are so sorry that you felt that it was too cold, if we had known, again we could have rectified the situation and increased the temperature; it generally hovers in the region of 24 - 25 degrees which previous guests had said was ok but we do appreciate that this may not suit everyone. This is our first season and we do really appreciate your comments as we are learning all the time and will take on board and act upon the issues that you have raised. Thank you for being such a lovely family to host and we do hope to see you again one day in the future. Best regards Pip & Gary

Lovely grounds for children, splendid hosts, quirky building, very peaceful.

  • 4 of 5

We (5 adults and 2 children) had a lovely week. We all made full use of the pool and the barbecues and the children made full use of the trampoline and climbing frame. Very friendly and accommodating owners, with a surprise welcome food (and drink) parcel. The property was very well equipped - no shortage of crocks or cutlery - with an extensive collection of board and other games, for both in and outdoors, and satellite TV and Wifi (although the latter is less than 100% reliable). The quiet was total - and coming from the SE of England, a significant change for the better. Local facilities were limited, although Carrouges has a lovely boulangerie/patisserie and a small supermarket; the limited facilities were not a problem as we were very self-contained and not looking for bright lights or theme parks. We might have eaten out more but many restaurants were still closed for the owners' holidays. However, we would recommend Le Bistro near the cathedral in Sees. Travelling to Caen and some WW2 sites was very simple with virtually no traffic. (In fact, most of the traffic encountered on the journeys to/from La Drutiere was British, with much of the rest Dutch or Belgian - the lighter traffic being a major advantage of not heading too far south in France.)

We would certainly recommend La Drutiere but would hesitate to take children (who can walk/toddle) under the age of 4 as the pool is unprotected and the stairs a challenge for little legs - as they also would be for very old knees! - and the grounds slope quite a lot; perfect for families with older children though and the two in our party - 6 and 4 - loved the place.

Pippa and Gary are lovely people and are very interested in their clients' needs. They have only been there a short time and have many unfulfilled plans but are certainly doing all the right things. If we had to nitpick we might hope for some cushions for the sunbeds and outdoor chairs and a little more shade/few more parasols (and the chairs are very heavy to move round the garden to quieter spots for a read or snooze. (And, as we often find at holiday accommodation, there are never enough large, non-slip trays to carry food and drinks from kitchen to barbecue areas.)

Overall, though, a very successful week's holiday for all of us and we would happily go again.

Better than we had hoped for!

  • 5 of 5

My (very large ) family stayed at the farmhouse during an unseasonably wet week in August, and despite the weather we had a fantastic time. The house is just what we had hoped for in a French Farmhouse - spacious but cosy, in a beautiful area, but the biggest surprise was the fantastic garden. The photos in the advert in no way do it justice! It was huge, immaculately kept and had stunning views over the countryside. The two BBq areas were perfect for lazy lunches, even in the drizzly weather, and the pool was a lovely size and very well maintained. Unfortunately it was also VERY chilly, but Andrew has said that they have decided to heat it from next year which would make a massive difference. For a large family, group of friends or two families holidaying together, La Drutiere is perfect. The farmhouse kitchen has a huge table to gather around for meals or games and the kitchen itself was better stocked than my house at home! We have stayed in villas before where we are struggling for enough glasses or pans to cook a meal, but quite frankly we could have invited the entire village here and not run out. We certainly hope to return here in the future, but next time we may decide to come in the autumn or winter as the house and local area would actually (in our opinion) be great all year around. Its garden and pool are great for the warm weather, but the huge wood burner and cosy kitchen lend itself to a lovely wintery break away too. Christmas or New Year here would be magical... Andrew and Suzanne were the perfect hosts, welcoming and knowledgeable about the area. We have no hesitation in recommending La Drutiere.

Beautiful Normandy

  • 4 of 5

La Drutiere provided the perfect base for a large family celebration of my mum's 60th birthday. The house is a great size easily accommodating 11 of us including two children 7 and 4. And that's why La Drutiere is so great - the house and garden is very well equipped to keep people of all ages occupied with a beautiful pool (too cold in May unfortunately) and a wonderfully large garden with climbing frame, swing, trampoline and table tennis. The kid's, and adults at times (!), loved this. And especially the two large BBQs - perfect for catering for a large party. The sunsets from the vantage point of the picnic bench at the bottom of the garden were a highlight for the adults too.

The area is really interesting to explore. Must sees are the castle at Falaise which is the birthplace of William the Conqueror (perfect for young and old), trip to the WONDERFUL local cider farm and the picturesque town of Bagnoles-de-l'Orne. Visitors here must try the Velo-Cycle!

And of course the wonderfully warm welcome and help you get from Andy and Suzanne. Perfect hosts - this really is a wonderful place that we would highly recommend for an easily accessible, comfortable property for a large group in an area with a lot of interest.

Amazing

  • 5 of 5

Well where to start!! This Property is amazing, Set in it's own beautiful grounds surrounded by green as far as the eye can see.

Andy and Suzanne (and the two lovely and friendly labs), are the most amazing host. We arrived to a lovely welcome pack and the fire burning. The reason why we rented this property was so we could take my 92 year old father in law back to Arromanches to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the D Day landing.

We had no complaints at all, very clean, beautiful soft bedding and towels, a very well stocked kitchen. Our age range was 11years -92years.

I could go on and on about what a wonderful stay we had at La Drutiere but you need to go and see for yourself. If you are looking for peace and quiet but yet close to civilisation this is the place for you.

We will be returning and I would recommend to young and old families alike, you wont be disappointed

Location

From the Owner

We came to this region on various occasions on holiday. We liked the pace of life and the simplicity of day to day living and decided to jump in and have an adventure. The beauty of the area was another positive factor in promotingthe Normandy region. The local French people are very friendly and welcoming. The local markets selling local produce and general buzz of village life is quaint and Traditional. The house is set amongst the rolling countryside within a tiny hamlet and is very peaceful and serene. Offering that get away from it all atmosphere. However there are big towns about 30 minutes away if one finds country life to quiet.
