Why Philippa Cubitt chose Saint-Sauveur-de-Carrouges

We came to this region on various occasions on holiday. We liked the pace of life and the simplicity of day to day living and decided to jump in and have an adventure. The beauty of the area was another positive factor in promoting the Normandy region. The local French people are very friendly and welcoming. The local markets selling local produce and general buzz of village life is quaint and

Traditional.

The house is set amongst the rolling countryside within a tiny hamlet and is very peaceful and serene. Offering that get away from it all atmosphere. However there are big towns about 30 minutes away if one finds country life to quiet.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The property offers a peaceful get away from it all atmosphere. The large garden looking out over rolling French countryside is very therapeutic and relaxing. There are area's on the property offering sun and shade and the garden is big enough to get away and be on your own. The heated swimming pool offers a refreshing dip when the heat gets too much. Later in the evening you can sit by the pool and sip some good French wine and watch the fantastic sun sets that this area offers.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We stayed here last August. Despite the weather we had a wonderful holiday. The hosts were welcoming & friendly and we wanted for nothing during our stay. On the not so summery days we lit the real log fire and were happy to chill but were equally keen to get into the pool on the warmer days. The area is peaceful & perfect for sightseing and the local town has just enough to temp you to to live off wine, baguettes & cheese. Well, when in Rome! Lovely farmhouse with fabulous garden

  • 5 of 5

This is a fabulous property that caters for large groups or families. Our group of 11 people (6 adults and 5 children) thoroughly enjoyed the property. The garden provided endless enjoyment for the children. The hosts were exceptionally kind keeping the swimming pool open for us at the end of October. It will certainly be a long term memory for us swimming in the pool on a beautiful autumn day. The football goals, trampoline and ping pong table all provided entertainment for our children (and adults!). The Gables bedroom provided a perfect get away from it all atmosphere for the grandparents - waking up to beautiful views over the garden and Normandy countryside. Pip and Gary are extremely friendly hosts and go the extra mile to make your stay enjoyable. We would certainly recommend this property.

Beautiful farmhouse in quiet location with fabulous private garden and pool

  • 5 of 5

We consisted of 4 couples aged from mid fifties to seventy and had a wonderful holiday together in this property from 19/8/17 - 26/8/17. The hamlet of La Drutiere is off a quiet D road with the house at the bottom end overlooking countryside and we loved the fact that there was no traffic noise. The house was beautifully presented on our arrival with fresh cut flowers in a couple of the rooms and a french stick, marmalade, a bottle pear cider and cheese awaiting us in the kitchen. We were lucky with the weather so spent a lot of time outside. The pool area was delightful and we made use of it every day. On the second day the pool was a little cold but as Pippa and Gary were in a house next door they quickly rectified this for us and it was a perfect temperature for the rest of the week. We also enjoyed the separate BBQ area and had fun with the table tennis and trampoline. At one point a game of penalty shoot out was going on in the children's size goal! There were six bedrooms but we chose to stick to our usual group of four holiday couples which worked very well as when we weren't eating outside we could all be easily seated round the farmhouse table in the kitchen. Each day we did a bit of exploring of the surrounding area and, on request, Pippa and Gary kindly supplied bikes when a couple of us went cycling. It's hard to find fault with this property, we had such a good time. However, if I'm being picky, one of our group with a bad back struggled to find a sufficiently comfortable mattress in the farmhouse. She checked the twin bedded room at the front of the house and the two smaller doubles but none of them offered the support that she needed, the rest of us were fine so I think this is only going to be an issue for those with back problems. The large gable room had the most fabulous view and the couple using it described it as being 'great for the soul' as they looked out on the star filled sky at night. Pippa, Gary and their daughter were very friendly, as was their little dog which frequently found a way to visit us but as he was well behaved we enjoyed his company. Thank you for a wonderful holiday, much fun and laughter was had by all.

Perfect family getaway, lovely gardens and plenty of character

  • 5 of 5

We recently had a week long stay in this fantastic property. We took our 2 young children (6 year old and 8 months old) and both sets of grandparents also came (8 people in total) and we were spoilt for space and choice of rooms. The house itself was spacious and well equipped whilst maintaining its farmhouse character. The outside space was the part we loved the most as it was perfect for our 6 year old, there was so much space for him to let off steam and plenty of things to do (trampoline, climbing frame, table tennis, swimming, football)...he absolutely loved it. The owners were very helpful and friendly and had good knowledge of the local area - they provided a very helpful handbook with suggestions for places to eat and visit. Overall we had a fantastic stay and have already discussed a potential return...we loved this place!!

Charming Carrouges Farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

There are no words to express how relaxing and peaceful our stay was in this beautiful setting. The tasteful decor and layout met every need. The family favorite was the pool, badminton, and picnic area beneath the trees. We were so close to everything in Normandy, and our hosts were so gracious and helpful. We will definitely share this hidden gem with friends and family.

Thank you, Pip & Gary!

Peace and Tranquility

  • 5 of 5

Thanks Pip and Gary for a restful week at La Drutiere. We chose it for its isolation from the modern world. No nearby motorways or main roads or towns. The result was a glorious tranquility, especially at night when nothing moved. The lack of light pollution meant glorious views of the Milky Way and the sighting of several shooting stars.

Everyone enjoyed the large grounds and the room to find individual space while still being in visual touch.

We had wonderful lunches in the picnic/barbecue area and even better barbecues every night, even though the weather was a little cool for the time of year.

The kitchen was a great meeting place each morning for staggered breakfasts as different parts of the family rolled out of bed at different times. Everyone enjoyed their rooms but especially Shelley and I. As the bank of mom and dad were funding the whole exercise we thought it reasonable to sit up in the gables with its floor to ceiling Windows and doors. Wonderful views over the countryside by day and the moon and stars by night.

Thanks again Pip and Gary, our amiable hosts

A beautiful and relaxing property in a heart of South Normandy

  • 4 of 5

The property is located in a beautiful and peaceful area South of Argentan. The farmhouse and large garden are excellent for a family or families to relax and enjoy. The 300 year old building had been tastefully updated and furnished to keep the traditional feel but with modern facilities. Generally the property was clean but one of the bedrooms had a lot of cobwebs/spiders behind the wardrobe - while you expect the a few creepy crawlies in an old place, that room could have been cleaner and our eldest moved to another room. However, we really relaxed here and found it spacious and comfortable. The kitchen was well equipped and the living areas were inviting. There were plenty of games and DVDs to enjoy on an evening which made for good fun after a day out or by the pool. We enjoyed the large outside pool during the sunny days but found it very cold, despite it being advertised as heated. It was covered at night but you needed to be brave on most days to jump in. The garden is large and has nice touches for children such as a trampoline and table tennis table which we used and enjoyed. It was a slight surprise to find the owners lived on site as this was not clear from the advertising but that said, we found Gary and Pip to be warm, friendly, helpful and respectful of our privacy, Bobby the puppy was gorgeous too! They provided some really helpful tips on places to visit and were responsive to issues we had when the gas cooker and Internet stopped working. We visited many places around the area, Carrouges Chateau, Sees and Bagnoles De L'Orne were highlights. It is also well located to take day trips to Paris in the East, Mont St. Michel in the West and Honfleur in the North but a car is essential to really exploit and enjoy the area. Be prepared for the toll booths too, there are a few if you travel far and prices range from 1 euro to 17 euros to get through. There are large supermarkets within a few kilometres and the local shops in quaint little village of Bouce five minutes away provide supplies to get by. Overall, we loved the property, not only is it a pleasure to relax in, it is ideal as a base to explore Normandy and spend time relaxing in. We would recommend either one or two families choosing La Drutiere. Thank you Gary and Pip!! Andrew, Debs and the kids x

Owner's Response: Dear Andrew, thank you so much for taking the time to write a review on your stay with us and are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your time at our Farmhouse in La Drutiere and the facilities which are provided. It was so good to see you and your family getting out and about so much and enjoying all the wonderful sites Normandy has to offer. We truly fell in love with the area when we came out here for the first time last June and took over the Gite business in October. We are doing our up-most to ensure our guests enjoy their stay at La Drutiere and are therefore hugely disappointed to hear, that one of our rooms could perhaps have been cleaned better; we would have returned to that room and cleaned away any fresh cobwebs which may have been lurking, if we had been aware of the problem. It really is so difficult in a very old property with beams to keep it totally clear of cobwebs, they really are the bane of our lives :-) you literally can clean them away and 24 hours later they re-appear. With regards to the swimming pool, we are so sorry that you felt that it was too cold, if we had known, again we could have rectified the situation and increased the temperature; it generally hovers in the region of 24 - 25 degrees which previous guests had said was ok but we do appreciate that this may not suit everyone. This is our first season and we do really appreciate your comments as we are learning all the time and will take on board and act upon the issues that you have raised. Thank you for being such a lovely family to host and we do hope to see you again one day in the future. Best regards Pip & Gary

The sites alsohave interesting museums to visit; you can choose the British landing beaches or the American beaches further along the coastline. The sites are beautiful but yet sombre when one thinks of what happened there. Very moving!
