Holiday Cottage near Criccieth, Close To The Sea, Beaches And Snowdonia National Park

A recently refurbished Elizabethan stone cottage with a huge inglenook fireplace. It has its own private courtyard with a BBQ and a picnic table. The cottage has an enclosed garden which opens onto a large private estate. The grounds of the Trefan estate extend to 30 acres of parkland and woodland bordered by the river Dwyfor - ideal for 'wild' swimming and fishing. There are woodland walks, jogging routes and an abundance of wildlife, especially badgers. A pathway runs along the river all the way to the local village Llanystumdwy. Llanystumdwy is a small village just half a mile away from the holiday cottage. The village pub serves excellent food. Criccieth is a quaint seaside town and is just 1.5 miles away, with a great selection of restaurants, pubs, shops, cafes and a health centre. A trip to Criccieth Castle gives excellent views across the bay and surrounding countryside and a visit to the famous Cadwalader's ice cream shop is a must.

The cottage enjoys total seclusion surrounded by its own 30 acre parkland ideal for: football, rugby, table tennis, jogging, birdwatching, walking, fishing or whatever. Outside: The cottage has an enclosed garden which opens onto a large private estate, an enclosed, private courtyard with BBQ area and picnic table. The grounds of the private estate extend to 30 acres of parkland and woodland, bordered by the Dwyfor river. There are secure, lockable gates making the holiday cottage child friendly. There is ample parking for cars and boats. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Household linen is provided. The cottage is fully equipped in every respect. There are no extra charges at all. Electricity, oil and logs are all included in the rental.

the perfect escape

This is a nature lovers haven, set in beautiful and expansive private grounds, with river and woodland walks on your doorstep. We arrived to a generous welcome package from our lovely hosts, which even included some freshly laid eggs from their hens. The cosy cottage draws you into a world of peace and tranquility, with the west facing windows offering some superb sunsets. It is the perfect place to come back to after a day at any of the nearby beaches or mountains. The cottage had everything - we wanted for nothing.

A little piece of Paradise

My family and I have just reluctantly returned from a holiday in this beautiful place. This amazing cottage is located in the most idyllic surroundings and has all the amenities you could possibly wish for whilst away from home. My two teenage grandchildren and their dog Alfie loved wild swimming in the nearby River Dwyfor and playing on the rope swing -the children that is, Alfie couldn't reach it!

The owners of the cottage, Margaret and Colin, live right next door and gave us a lovely warm welcome and provided a generous welcome pack for us on arrival. Thank you very much for that.

The log burner in the inglenook fireplace was lovely and cosy to relax by after a busy day sightseeing and playing in the grounds.

Just a little tip - if it's been a lovely day weatherwise it is well worth getting up in the early hours of the morning and going into the garden to see the stars. The night sky without any light pollution whatsoever is absolutely unbelievable and not to be missed. It was one of the highlights of our trip.

A superb cottage in a fantastic location and well worth a visit.

A fantastic find!

By far and away the most well equipped holiday cottage we have ever stayed in (over the years we have rented many). We arrived to a wonderful welcome basket and our every need had been catered for in the cottage. The owners were incredibly accommodating but never intrusive. The grounds are stunning and both our children and dogs made full use of them and enjoyed them immensely. The cottage was an oasis of calm to return to after a busy day out. It was our first visit to Trefan Hall but I can safely say it will not be our last.

I rarely write reviews, however we were so pleased with the cottage and grounds, I felt I could not pass up the opportunity to pass on a gem. Having a changeable week weather wise, we were able to view it as both a sunny holiday home (wonderful for walks in the woods and down the river) and a snuggly winter get away (cosy log burner). We can safely say it is suitable for all seasons!

Super holiday cottage

Just arrived back from a wonderful weeks vacation in this beautiful cottage & amazing garden/park... The cottage itself is very cosy and very well equipped. The garden is wonderful, Margaret & Colin (the owners) very kindly allowed our three dogs open access to the grounds, they and us humans really didn't want to leave... So much to do in the area, but after being out all day exploring it was so nice to return to the cottage and have a nice drink out in the gardens.. Thank you Margaret & Colin for a wonderful week, we will return...

Magical Trefan Cottage

Criccieth beach is just 1.5 miles from the holiday cottage. Porthmadog is located just 4 miles away with its bustling harbour and The Welsh Highland Railway Station. The world famous Pwllheli sailing facilities are also 4 miles away.


By train - Cambrian Coast line to Criccieth (connection from Shrewsbury) which is 2 miles from Llanystumdwy. The journey from Machynlleth to Criccieth is considered to be one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. Through trains (and connections via Machynlleth or Dovey Junction) to Shrewsbury, Birmingham, Wolverhampton. Intercity to Bangor (London/Euston to Holyhead) which is 25 miles from Llanystumdwy.

Portmeirion is a beautiful Italianate resort village located near Porthmadog, approx 5 miles from the cottage. Portmeirion is famous for the filming of The Prisoner and has been the setting for other film and television productions. It boasts an exquisite range of shops, restaurants, hotels and beautiful, scenic walks.

The History of Trefan - Trefan cottage was built in 1540 on foundations laid down in the fourteenth century. It is built in stone with immensley thick walls making it very cosy and warm.

The Hughes family which occupied the cottage became very wealthy and built Trefan Hall. When John Wynn Hughes died in 1792, his estate extended to two thousand acres.

The acrimonious legal battle following his death led to a change in the laws of inheritance such was the national scandal of his widow's eviction. The winner of that legal battle was the Priestley family from Yorkshire. It was their management of the Trefan estate which so antagonised the young David Lloyd George. His family home was on the periphery of the estate.

Lloyd George's attitude to the priviledge and dominance of the landlords was undoubtedly influenced by the power of the vast Trefan estate. In due course, his hostility led to his introduction of swingeing land taxes when he became Chancellor of the Exchequer.

It was said that his reforms "laid axe to the root of the tree of landlordism." The Trefan estate covered two thousand acres before Lloyd George, it is now a very beautiful thirty acre private park! His political reforms were very effective.

Castles - If you like castles, you'll love North Wales. Including Criccieth, Harlech and Caernarfon to name just a few.

Snowdon - Snowdonia National Park includes the world famous Snowdon Mountain. If you're not a mountain climber don't worry, you'll find the Snowdon Mountain Railway right up your street.

Sailing - The boating facilities are ideal from the nearby marinas of Felinheli, Caernarfon and Pwllheli. Construction of The National Sailing Academy, based in Pwllheli, is due to be completed in 2014. And of course, there are also the harbours of Porthmadog and Barmouth.

Other activities include: Climbing, White Water Rafting, Mountaing Biking, Horse Riding, Fishing and Birdwatching plus miles of Railways to explore!
