Prominent 1930’s Villa with Magnificent Panoramic Sea View

Updated: 25-Sep-2016
Villa in Talmont sur Gironde, Poitou-Charentes, France - The Old Customs House in This Beautiful Peninsula Village

This prominent 1930’s house is truly in an unforgettable magnificent panoramic position situated on the edge of the outstanding peninsula village of Talmont sur Gironde, classified as one of France's most beautiful villages. You can watch and hear the tide rolling in and out from the kitchen, lounge, bedroom and of course outside on the balcony, terrace and in the garden. At high tide you are only meters away from the water. You really might feel as if you are on a ship on the sea. The house was built on the foundations of the former ‘Customs House’, therefore, giving title to its present name ‘The Old Customs House’. For your holiday pleasure we have just finished renovating a 2-3 bedroom apartment on the 1st floor with splendid views overlooking the water. We have used only quality products to provide the comfort and style this magnificent house deserves. We have private parking and the house provides the perfect view for just watching and relaxing no matter what the weather.

A stunning place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

Having found this beautiful property 10 months before our departure date, I can honestly say nothing was too much trouble for Valerie and John. We took my parents with us and they kindly ensured the mattress was suitable for my mother, sent literature in advance and arranged for shopping to be in for our first day.

The property has been beautifully restored. It is fully equipped in every sense and really offers 5* accommodation. The views from the dining table in the kitchen are simply stunning. We enjoyed breakfast every morning with the sun streaming through. The garden is fully enclosed and suited our two young children. The balcony offered a place to read and take in the lovely views.

The kitchen is fully equipped, the bathrooms are top notch and it is just a wonderfully relaxing place to enjoy exploring the local countryside. I have stayed at various places over the past 12 years and can honestly say this is the best property I have stayed in. I would love to return again and again! Worth every star and excellent value for money.

Thank you Valerie and John for your hospitality and stunning property.

just perfect

  • 5 of 5

The property was better than the pictures show. The view from the kitchen window while eating our meals was beautiful from sunrise to sunset.Everything you need is provided in the property. Such a relaxing place to base our travels around the area. John and Valerie will do everything to make your stay comfortable. They were really helpful when we needed to arrange oxygen for our stay. They advised us on restaurants to visit and we really enjoyed visiting them, especially The Cottage at Arces.

To finish all i can say is Beautiful..... and we wish it was ours......

A beautiful property...in a magical setting

  • 5 of 5

I can't tell you how much we love this place...it's a truly unique property in a wonderful setting. you could quite happily sit all day and watch out of the window as the glorious Gironde estuary unfolds before your eyes. The light, the tides, the wildlife, the fishing and pleasure boats all contribute to the ever-changing panorama.

The property itself is very well appointed, everything has been thought of and it all works together so well. There were four of us staying and it met our needs superbly. We almost had two fully functioning, adjoining apartments but we shared whenever we needed to. The kitchen is great. As a cook, I'm always complaining that these sort of rentals don't have the right equipment. Well, this one does! And it has possibly THE best view from the table you're ever likely to see.

Valerie and John, the owners, are attentive without ever being invasive. If you need something, they'll be along to provide it. They're friendly, warm and lovely.

There's an amazing balcony, a well-kept, shady garden.

it's probably the most wonderful place we've stayed. It's the top of its class. I can't tell you how much we love this place...because if we do, you'll book it and we won't be able to go again!

A unique experience

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautifully restored apartment full of the charm and loving care of the owners. Valerie and John have created a unique environment for their guests and no detail is spared; every item has been carefully selected. The property has a most wonderful kitchen for foodies. We were able to purchase fish from a local fisherman - a rare treat. The view from the kitchen window of the sea is a living picture and you won't be able to resist taking pictures. Valerie and John are brilliant hosts; they are great ambassadors for the local tourist industry. Futhermore, the property was spotless and they have equiped the propery with the best of everything.

Lovely House, Great Views

  • 5 of 5

The views of the fishing huts from the windows and balcony as well as the village made this a great place to stay for a couple of nights on our journey home. Valerie and John made us so welcome offering so many extras and lots of information. We loved it and them. The bed was comfortable as was the lounge and it was so peaceful at night although the village was busy in daytime because it is such a lovely place. This was not a problem and we were led into the gated village by a guide on a bike and then parked our car in the locked grounds of the villa. Access to the rooms is via the balcony and there is space to sit in the sun and enjoy the view.

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

Specialist holidays can be arranged.

Talmont is 16km south east of Royan, 10km south east of the gorgeous white beaches of St Georges de Didonne and just minutes away from the fine sandy coves of Meschers. The famous wines of the Medoc are just across the estuary. It is a fun day out crossing by boat from Blaye or Royan, to the Medoc to visit the castles and their wine caves. You can also drive to Bordeaux (1-1/2 hour away). On the north side of Royan you have the Wild Coast and the European famous zoo La Palmyre. Royan 20 min.

Rochefort is 1 hour from Talmont and La Rochelle (with its airport connecting the UK and France) is 1 ½ hours north. The ancient roman town of Saintes (25 min drive) has been labelled as a ‘City of Art and History’ by the minister of culture. We are just a walk away from the archaeological ruins of "FA", what is believed to have been the largest Roman port of France.

Talmont’s streets are lined with holly hocks and flowers. There are lovely artist’s shops in the village and several restaurants from which to choose. You will want to have a nosy around more than once! Hikers will enjoy the endless walking paths of the area. The pilgrim’s way also passes along this coast line. The village was originally founded by Edward I of England in 1284. The stunning church of St Ragegonde has the typical roman saintonage style dating back to the 12th century.

Further Details:

St Ragegonde is sitting on the edge of the cliff surrounded by the sea on one side and has its ancient marine cemetery covered with holly hocks on the other. Talmont has its own local history museum and tourist information center. English guided tours are available. The countryside outside Talmont is filled with Charentaise vineyards whose wines are really starting to make a name for themselves. Regional food specialties are seafood, shellfish, oysters, goat’s cheese, various duck and pork pâtés and Charentaise melons.

The nearest farmers markets are in Meshers, (everyday except Mondays in the summer) St George de Didonne, Cozes (Wednesdays) and Royan (except Mondays). The bakery in Arces, 4km away has an excellent selection of breads, pastry and pizza
