Farmhouse in Pontons, Barcelona, Spain - Lovely Views And A Wide Range Of On-Site Activities

A restored farmhouse located high up a valley in the Penedes wine region. The private driveway leads to a shady forecourt with barbecue, vines and a lovely view. The house has a cool, spacious interior with fully equipped kitchen, lounge and games room. Upstairs, there are 5 bedrooms sleeping 11 comfortably, with extra mattresses and a cot available. The 6 acres of surrounding grounds include a private swimming pool with two levels of sundecks overlooking the valley, a petanque court, a large play area with trampoline, climbing frame and swings, and olive and almond groves. There is also an area for table tennis/basket ball/football.

Cal Gimeno is located just 1 hour from the lively and historic cities of Barcelona and Tarragona and 30-40 minutes from the beaches of Sitges, Vilanova and Calafell. The famous vineyards of Torres, Freixenet and Cordoniu are close by, and the theme parks of Port Aventura, Aqualeon, Aquopolis and Costa Caribe are all within an hour's drive.

About the Owner

Tim and Helen moved to Barcelona from London in 1998 and lived in Catalunya for the next 14 years, having 2 lovely daughters along the way. The relaxed way of life, the weather (of course!), the beach and our farmhouse are what kept us there, but the lack of good quality secondary schools led us to return to the UK in 2012. However, Tim still works in Spain and stays at Cal Gimeno most weeks while the rest of the family visit several times a year (always in the autumn for our annual olive harvest). We all love working in the open air, watching the changing of the seasons and learning the annual routine of planting, picking and pruning.

The farmhouse is very spacious, in a beautiful rural location and has lots to keep both adults and children entertained. It also benefited from being slightly cooler and less humid than Barcelona, even though the City was within an hour from the Farmhouse. Great holiday, we did not want to leave and therefore very much hope to go back

Tim is the son of a farmer and has always wanted our children to have the same opportunity to run wild and explore the great outdoors. We spent 2 years searching for a farmhouse but, inevitably, it was a conversation in a pub that finally led us to Cal Gimeno. We have made a fair few changes to bring it up to modern standards, and it has become our family home with everyone relaxing when we stay. Cal Gimeno is only 30 minutes from the coast, but might as well be in a different world. It is so tranquil with no neighbours and lovely views, and so cool and beautiful up in the hills. The area is filled with vineyards and olive groves, and steep tree-covered mountains topped with cliffs.

Cal Gimeno is located inland, away from the bustle and humidity of the coast. However, the beaches of the Costa Dorada and Costa del Garraf are only a 30-40 minute drive away. These include the pretty and popular old fishing town of Sitges, with its many shops and restaurants, and the long, wide beaches of Vilanova, Calafell and Salou.


The airports of Barcelona and Reus (Tarragona) are one hour away by car. Girona is almost 2 hours. Car hire is essential - details of local companies available on request.


The nearest villages (5 mins drive) are Pontons and Torrelles de Foix with small shops, bakeries and restaurants/cafes. The nearest large supermarkets are in Vilafranca del Penedes (20 mins). Vilafranca also has a hospital, and a local market on a Saturday.

There are many nearby vineyards to visit, including Torres, Freixenet, Cordoniu and Jean Leon. The spectacular monastery of Montserrat and the historic cities of Barcelona and Tarragona (the old Roman capital) are an hour away.

Further Details:

The excellent theme parks of Port Aventura, Costa Caribe, Aqualeon and Aquopolis are all within an hour's drive. Horse riding is possible near Vilafranca. The nearest golf courses are Vendrell or Sitges - both 40 mins. There is also plenty of local walking.

Cal Gimeno is a classic Catalan masia - a south-facing farmhouse with thick walls to keep out both heat and cold. It looks like a cottage but is amazingly big inside, especially the kitchen and living areas, so it can accommodate three families without feeling crowded. It has been modernised, so no damp and no making-do, and is fully equipped with everything a modern family needs. But perhaps the best thing is the outside space. A private pool with sundecks. Plenty of shady areas around the house for eating and relaxing. A petanque court right below the house. A big playground with trampoline and climbing frame. Table tennis, basketball, table football, football net and plenty more grounds to explore. Great for all ages. Barcelona, Tarragona, theme parks and beaches are all easy to get to, but we find guests tend to stay on site.

  • Accommodation: Stairgate available on request. Extra mattresses and cots available. The pool is heated using solar power. It is not usable in winter or early spring. Outside: Paved forecourt includes barbecue, sofa, tables and chairs, with mulberry trees and vines for shade. Private pool is 7m x 4m approx and has solar heating for spring and autumn. There are two levels of sundecks with loungers, chairs, tables, a shower and a small fridge. We also have a paddling pool for those too young to enjoy the swimming pool. The pool is fenced-off, but the grounds are extensively terraced, so toddlers need close supervision. There is a flat, shady games area to the side of the house with table tennis, swingball, basketball net and football goal. Adjacent garage has a full-size table-football. On the terrace below the house is a petanque court with boules provided. The lower play area has a trampoline, climbing frame with swings and slide. There is also a vegetable patch and a great many fruit trees with tomatoes, plums, figs, peaches, apples, apricots, cherries and grapes to enjoy in season. The rest of the 6 acres consists of olive and almond groves. Utility Room: Separate laundry room with washing machine, dryer and utility sink. Washing line outside. Washing powder and cleaning products provided. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All bed linen and towels (for indoors and pool/beach) are provided. Property is cleaned between rentals. Property can be cleaned and linen changed weekly for longer rentals if requested. Other: Converted wine store now used as a cloakroom. Small bodega with wine rack. Garage with all sorts of sports equipment and some bikes
