One Bedroom Stone Cottage in Peaceful Mountain Setting with Panoramic Views but 10 minutes from Charming Medieval Village with Restaurants, Bars and Shops

Romantic converted stone cottage with original beams and other features and very peaceful. South facing and located at 900m in the Appenines with outstanding mountain views and surrounded by woodland; good access. The photographs cannot do it justice. We have a pool (9 X 3.5 m) available mid June to mid September. Shops and restaurants are in a pretty medieval town Coreglia Antiminelli 10 minutes drive away, with Barga a further 15 minutes. A day trip can be made to Florence, Pisa, Lucca and Cinque Terra for example and we are less than an hour from the beach. There are lots of other more local interesting destinations - pretty mountain villages, medieval churches and castles, wind caves and a gorge to explore. During the summer you can find a local Festa or Feast/Pageant at one of the local towns or villages. Can be rented on a weekly or a daily basis for 3 days or more.

Driving from the airport is a speedy course in Italian bravado, however, on arrival, we experienced the opposite. Complete serenity, with the only sound of birds singing, and a warm welcome by our friendly hosts. There was lots of info on the surroundings and the cottage was extremely comfortable and furnished to the highest standards. Having breakfast, lunch, antipasta, dinner or just enjoying the sun, while overlooking the splendour of the Appenines is something that no picture can tell. The cottage is perfectly situated to explore all areas: to walk (our highlight), to take in some culture (visits to Sienna, Lucca, Cinque Terre), the coast and many small mountain villages whose peacefulness is overwhelming. We can’t wait to go back and can’t forget the great time we had. If you want to recharge from a busy life this is the place"

Lovely cottage with fantastic views

  • 5 of 5

We spent nine days here - the first time we have been to this part of Italy which we can highly recommend. The cottage is very comfortable, clean and cosy with everything you would need for a peaceful and relaxed holiday. The view from the cottage is breathtaking and even more dramatic due to the ever changing light on the mountains and villages below. We found the cottage to be a good base for walking ( you can go on great walks direct from the cottage) and exploring the beautiful villages and countryside nearby. We really enjoyed being able to have meals on the terrace and used the BBQ several times. Janet and Elliot were very kind and helpful throughout our stay and provided a wealth of local knowledge including local maps and walking guides. The nearby shops had everything we needed for cooking our own meals and everywhere we went the people were so friendly and helpful.

Perfect, peaceful haven... with plenty to do and see nearby

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in the cottage and enjoyed visiting the surrounding area. We are already familiar with other parts of Tuscany and have visited Lucca several times but had not, until now, ventured into the hills of the Garfagnana. It is such a beautiful area and the scenery can be appreciated very easily just relaxing on the terrace of the cottage! The cottage itself is excellent - everything you could need and made just for two. On the days we didn't venture out, we spent time relaxing, reading, swimming and also explored a little of the surrounding woods. There is nothing to disturb you if you are looking for a peaceful retreat and, if you do need to stay connected, there is wifi access!

Of couse, it is worth heading out and visiting too.... we enjoyed exploring Barga, Castiglione di Garfagnana, Fabbriche di Vallico, Coreglia Antelminelli, Ghivizzano and Cardoso. We felt very welcome everywhere we went and were invited to local festivals in two of the villages. We ate well too, at l'Altana in Barga, l'Arcile in Coreglia Antelminelli and at Lo Sfizio in Castiglione di Garfagnana. Though we were disappointed that the local restaurant had closed down, it was also lovely just spending evenings relaxing on the terrace.

Janet and Elliott made sure we had everything we needed and let us know what was going on in the area while we were there. They were very discreet but there if we needed anything and made us feel very welcome and comfortable. We also loved having occasional visits from the chickens and Stella, the dog.

We hope that we will have the chance to spend another holiday at the cottage and, in the meantime, are highly recommending it to family, friends and colleagues.

Lovely cottage in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

Our second stay in this well-equipped cottage with the most amazing views, once again we had a fantastic relaxing holiday. We particularly enjoyed sitting outside in a shaded terrace. The owners could not have been more helpful and made sure we had everything we needed, nothing was too much trouble. There is so much to do and see in this beautiful area that we were spoiled for choice.

A wonderful place to stay, highly recommended

Property ID 8045290 Stone Cottage, Pietriao

  • 5 of 5

A beautifully appointed, pristine cottage for two set in the grounds of the owner's home. All holiday needs catered for, with a small but well equipped kitchen with bar b q for outside cooking. Very comfortable bed with plenty of linen and towels. Private outside areas for secluded eating, sun bathing or relaxing with a book, with access to the owner's simply stunning pool. The owners provide excellent local knowledge of towns, villages and local sightseeing, with brilliantly written walking tours. Do not trust the Italian maps: trust the owner's directions! The house is set high up the mountain but is easily accessible, the drive from the bottom of the valley taking approx 25 minutes and the scenery is simply breath-taking.

You could quite happily spend your entire stay in and outside the cottage, but it would be a shame to miss the beautiful area with which you are surrounded. The nearby town of Barga is fascinating, and slightly further Lucca is definitely worth a whole day's visit. Do not overlook the opposite valley, using the owner's directions you will be rewarded with some outstanding driving, walking and views.

We spent a perfect week here, walking, visiting places nearby and soaking up the Italian hospitality, food and scenery, returning each evening to the stone cottage, radiating the day's warmth from its stone walls, providing the perfect accommodation. We hope to return soon and would definitely recommend the cottage to friends.

Idyllic Cottage with Outstanding Views

  • 5 of 5

Janet and Elliott were fantastic, warm hosts who gave plenty of information about the area and afforded us privacy. Their cottage, accessible via an exciting track, overlooks a beautiful forested valley with dramatic mountains in the distance (climbable if you're brave). The remote location makes for a peaceful, often silent retreat and the veranda offers one of the most magnificent places to eat home cooking. The view is constantly shifting with light and cloud and the regularity of the sunset over the mountains did not make it any less special.

The cottage is attached to the Janet and Elliot's villa (though noise does not travel) and the pool (always the perfect temperature with an equally fantastic view) is in their garden. Coming from our small London flat, the place felt like a home from home with well thought out kitchen equipment/ utensils/ provisions and a cosy layout. Despite the temperature creeping over 30 each day outside, the cottage was never too hot in the evening if kept dark and aired. We enjoyed having four loungers, two tables and four chairs available to us for seeking out sun or shade as required.

If you are feeling adventurous you can climb up Monte Forato (we set off at 7am to avoid the midday sun) from Fornovolasco. You can see the arch in the mountain from the cottage on a clear day and the views from the top are extremely rewarding. It's roughly an hour's drive.

I would highly recommend this property to all ages (I'm 24 but can imagine my parents enjoying this property too).

Loved this cottage

  • 4 of 5

Janet and Elliot were very welcoming and helpful - they were the perfect hostess and host - never far away but not in your face

The cottage has everything (except an oven, although the microwave kindof doubles up) - the water supply is excellent and plenty of hot

The pool is lovely although small - it meant I could do a lot more lengths than usual

Minor improvements - the outside tables are small - tricky to balance all the bits and pieces on them

The wifi was patchy and sometimes only available outside - a bit tricky as we were trying to email UK a lot coping with a family bereavement

However, all said and done, this is a fabulous location with gorgeous views

We would go there again

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: The cottage is pleasant throughout the year with mountain breezes in the hotter months and a wood burner when it is cooler (but you'll certainly get a suntan if you want in the summer). It is eco friendly with hot water heated by solar panels and wood if needed from our own forest. All our visitors have been bowled over with the views and the charm of the place. We planned it as a retreat for ourselves when the younger generation take over the adjacent farmhouse, so it is very comfortable with everything you should need. It is designed for 2 people with the staircase open plan with the living room and bedroom. It has been refurbished and furnished to a high standard. There is a CD/ipod player - Roberts Sound 45. Everyday basics, a welcome bottle of prosecco and key essentials provided. You can pick up our wifi. Outside: The property is surrounded by 20 acres of our own forest and is very beautiful. There are terraces on both levels with tables, loungers and a barbecue. The shared pool is 9 by 3.5m. The area is good for porcini (mushrooms) in season. Also available table football. Utility Room: Use of washing machine. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen and towels provided change weekly.
