About The Owner

We are a family of four, living in the beautiful South West of Ireland, but originally from England. Our extended families mostly live in the North of England and manage the cottage for us. We enjoy outdoor activities such as walking, cycling and the beach. A holiday is an important time for families, and we aim to provide an experience that exceeds expectations! We are proud that we get a large number of repeat visits to the cottage through many 'word-of-mouth' recommendations.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2009

Why The Owner chose North Yorkshire

We visit the UK a few times a year and were looking for a base that we could also rent out as a holiday cottage. Railway cottage met all our criteria. It is in a peaceful hamlet within the national park & is close to the beach & many tourist attractions. We believe that we have the best of both worlds in that there is an easy walk into Pickering, which is a picturesque, small market town, with atmospheric pubs and restaurants, but being in a peaceful area, surrounded by fields, quiet lanes and woodland walks. There is great wildlife around, and we often get visited by a woodpecker & other wild birds! The cottage has been converted and modernised in 2009 and is extremely well equipped. From the moment you arrive you will feel like you are on holiday - you cannot help but relax!

What makes this cottage unique

Railway cottage is ideal for families, and will be a memorable holiday. It offers a rare experience to watch steam trains, on the most popular steam railway in the UK, from the comfort of the living room and bedroom as they pass slowly past the cottage. Have a look at the video on our website! Most visitors have said that they end up shouting 'train' every day, rushing to the window to wave to the passengers to see which of the magnificent steam trains is passing! The cottage is very cosy, comfortable and warm. You will be well looked after, and we have been told that we offer great value! Since first renting out the property in March 2009, we have been booked almost every week, mostly to families and train enthusiasts, and we hope you decide to visit!

Guestbook comments from the owner

From the children's point of view it was fabulous to have steam trains going past. It was extremely well equipped. From my point of view it was spotless and had a lovely welcoming bottle of wine!!'

We enjoyed our stay in your warm & cosy cottage & the bed was very comfortable. The situation was perfect for train spotters either through the window, a quick dash outside, or by the level crossing. We did not need for anything!

It was one of those holidays that flew by and we wished we had more days. We had the best week ever and loved Railway cottage. We loved the peace and quiet, & the trains. We enjoyed watching the various birds on the feeder. Cannot think of anything we did not like about the Cottage & it was by far the nicest we have ever stayed in. Clean comfortable and fresh but still with character!

*** The cottage was very comfortable & the kitchen had everything you could need. The goodies left by Lizze were a lovely touch, the homemade jam was delicious.'

Excellent cottage in peaceful location.

  • 5 of 5

Lovely cottage, equipped with everything you could possibly need. Pretty walk along the river into town where there are several nice places to eat and drink.

Lize made us feel very welcome, particularly with her homemade cakes which were great.

Railway Enthusiast's Heaven

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to Railway Cottage and it was as good as ever. Clean, well maintained but most of all a home from home. We arrived early but that was not a problem and we were able to unload our luggage and go shopping while Lize finished off preparing the cottage after the previous visitors. There are bird feeding posts just outside the lounge windows and we were treated to a great variety including most of the tit family, robin, dunnock, nuthatch, chaffinch and tree sparrow. It is located about 30 minutes from Whitby and Scarborough by car (the roads are quite busy) or you can go the leisurely way by train. There are plenty of good eating places within a 20 minute walk and many attractions either in Pickering or nearby, the Beck Isle museum, Ryedale Folk Museum in Hutton le Hole, Duncombe Park incorporating the National Bird of Prey Centre (a must see), Goathland Railway station as featured in "Heartbeat", the railway workshop and engine sheds at Grosmont and the resident artist (Christopher Ware) at Levisham Station. These are just a few of the treats but there is much more.

Great Stay

  • 4 of 5

It was set in a great location. The kids and husband loved watching the trains. It was comfortable, clean with many little extras that helped make our holiday really special. We were greeted by the owners Mothers who showed us all we needed to know as well as leaving is a welcome pack. I would definatley recommend this property to people. We Visited Whitdy three times using the train park and ride to avoid the traffic. The kids loved the beach. We also visited York Railway museum which was a lot bigger and better than we remembered it from 7 years ago. The sausage rolls there were amazing.

We also went walking around Pickering. We enjoyed the woods and stream.

The cottage is situated on the line to Whitby and just in the outskirts of Pickering.

The cottage is a little gem, it has everything that you would need for your stay and more.

The location is excellent, and the trains make this cottage a real find.

The cottage is beautifully maintain and very clean.

We will be booking again in the future abs would recommend this cottage to everyone.
