Overview

About the property

House in Porthoustock, Nr. Helston, Cornwall, England - Quiet Village, 5 Minutes Walk to the Beach

Fox Cottage is 1 of about 20 houses in the picturesque fishing cove of Porthoustock. It has a fine view of the sea, which is a 5 minute walk down a quiet road. There is a large sunny terrace at the back, and in front, across the unmade road, an acre of garden with a stream and ponds. The cove is full of interest. There is a quarry on one side of the cove and a boat comes in 3 times a week to load up the road stone - fishermen leave from the cove to catch mackerel, bass, crabs and lobsters, divers explore the wrecks off the Manacle rocks. There is a pier for fishiing or jumping and diving at high tide. The beach is stony, the water clean and the swimming lovely and there are beautiful cliff and country walks. The footpath to St Keverne is delightful. There is a newsagents, fresh bread, an excellent butcher, groceries, café, doctor, and 2 pubs. Although near some of finest sandy beaches in south Cornwall, Porthoustock itself is quiet with little traffic. Would suit 2 families perfectly.

Location

Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

Porthoustock beach: 5 min walk. Lovely swimming, fishing boats, divers, quarry-boat twice a week loading roadstone.

Coverack: 15 min drive. Pretty harbour, cafes, sand at low tide. windsurfing, canoeing tuition.

Kynance: 20 min drive. Breathtaking. Sand, serpentine caves at low tide, natural pools.

Kennack Sands: 20 min drive. Sand, surf. Mullion too.

Cadgwith 20 min drive: pretty fishing cove, touristy.

Helford: 20 min drive. Beautiful estuary. Explore Frenchman's Creek by hire boat.

Travel:

Newquay nearest airport an hour and a half hour drive. Truro, Redruth, Penzance nearest railway stations. Taxis available but expensive. Car hire available from Truro. Car necessary to reach Porthoustock and making day trips. There is enough to do locally without a car, but there are also such beautiful beaches beyond walking distance that a car would be a great asset. The roads are reasonably quiet on the Lizard.

Distances:

1 mile walk to St Keverne. Driving: Helston 20 minutes. Truro 45 minutes. Redruth 40 minutes. Lizard 20 minutes. Helford 20 minutes. Gweek Seal Sanctuary 30 minutes.

Further Details:

St Keverne has a post office, newsagents, minimarket, excellent butchers, 2 pubs, a cafe. There is a doctor's surgery. Roskilly's Farm is a wonderful place to take children - they are invited watch the calves being fed and watch milking time. They have ponds and ducks and a nice restaurant serving organic food, inside, or out in the old farmyard. Their famous ice-cream and chutney are on sale. Trelowarren National Trust house (15 minutes) has a very good restaurant and a nursery (plants) and lovely woodland walks and there is a long walk from there down to the Helford River. Halzephron pub near Helston does excellent meals. The Shipwright's Arms right on the Helford estuary is a lovely place for a summer supper. Trebah, Trelissick, andd Glendurgan Gardens are 40 minutes away. Cross Common Nursery, between Kynance and the Lizard is full of interesting plants to buy. Tesco's and Sainsbury's are 20 minutes away just this side of Helston. Helston itself is a thriving market town with shops and banks and tea-rooms. Porthleven has a good fish shop and a picturesque harbour. But you may be able to buy fish or crabs in Porthoustock from a local fisherman. A neighbour keeps ducks and hens and you should be able to buy fresh eggs there.

Pets subject to negotiation! The house is very suitable for children and there are some toys and games there for a wet day. Little children 1- 4 would need to be supervised in the garden because of the ponds and the stream. They would need to be watched on the terrace as three of the steps are steep. Sand pit. It is great to be able to walk down to the beach easily with hardly any traffic, and up the valley to the village by the beautiful footpath. Slightly older children can walk to the beach themselves, and in the garden will enjoy playing in the stream. Outside: The terrace at the back of the house is on two levels. It is large, grassy, and slopes down to a stream. There are willows, hydrangea, tamarisk, and two ponds. There is room for three cars to park next to the house. Further up the unmade road are three thatched cottages and then, over a style, the footpath up to St Keverne. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bedlinen and tea towels are included in the price. They will be changed once a week. Please bring your own towels. Other: The dining room/playroom (15' ) runs between sitting-room and kitchen, with a view of the garden and fields. A 6' table (which can be joined to the kitchen table to make a square for a larger number). Porch to store coats, boots, buckets and spades, etc.

Absolutely fantastic - home from home with friendly neighbours. Wished we could have stayed longer.

  • 5 of 5

This property has loads of character and charm and is completely in keeping with the area unlike some of the more modern properties, you actually feel like a local staying here.

It has everything you could possibly want and is in a great location to access the beaches and landmarks around Lands End and The Lizard. It is also close to St Keverne that has a well stocked shop, post office, newsagent, butchers, pubs and you must visit The Greenhouse bistro.

It is very peaceful and has great views of the sea.

The outdoor seating area is a brilliant space for chilling with a bottle of wine after a day on the beach!

The beds were extremely comfortable and if you want to wake up to a beautiful sunrise and a view of the sea then make sure you take the master bedroom!

It has all the quirkiness of an older property with shelves of books and family games and toys but with all the mod cons of washer, dryer, dishwasher, Wifi etc.

There is ample parking and a wild garden with a lovely stream running through it.

Jenny was extremely helpful and gave us loads of great tips of where to go in the area, we managed to get to most of them!

I must reiterate as all of the other visitors except one have said the property was extremely clean in all areas, couldn't fault the changeover team who were meticulous. They were very friendly and we were left everything we needed for tea, coffee and biscuits on our arrival along with some fresh flowers, a lovely touch that you don't get with other properties.

To summarise this is a proper family home and you can tell it is a well loved property, we certainly loved it and would stay here again over any other property in the area.

Lovely warm and homely house

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely week. The house is warm, comfortable and spacious. Everything we needed was there including wood for the stove for the Autumnal evenings. Just great. Hoping that the Agapanthus we bought from a neighbour will cope with the Northern winter!

Property description is very accurate. Thank you. Carol Makin

Owner's Response: Clearly the Allen family took against our house as soon as they arrived - it was not what they expected or hoped for, and I'm sorry for that. So disappointing for them. As soon as I received their complaint I refunded their money. For some reason the heating had failed (I think they must have fiddled with the time switch), the hot water was working, there were two electric heaters available, the television was working (they just didn't know how to switch from dvd to TV), the carpets were clean and without stains. As for the beds, everything was clean and my changeover team are meticulous. The suggestion the there was an infestation of bedbugs is ridiculous! Read the reviews of the previous two guests who comment on cleanliness and how much they enjoyed the house. Fox Cottage is a family house with children's toys, games, excellent kitchen equipment, and hundreds of books. I think the Allen family with their three chihuahuas were hoping for something more like a Premier Inn. My changeover team were amazed and hurt by their reaction and I was upset for them.

A home away from home

  • 5 of 5

As soon as we saw the pictures of Fox Cottage we knew it was exactly the place for our family of seven. A real home away from home (and one of the few holiday houses I've been to where the knives were sharp!).
