About the property

Holiday Home in Villaverde, Cangas de Onis, Asturias - On the Doorstep of the Picos de Europa National Park

'La Arganosa' is an idyllic retreat with a large leafy garden, set high in the mountains on the edge of the Picos de Europa National Park. From its elevated position, it enjoys spectacular and uninterrupted views of wide open skies and mountains. 'La Arganosa' is not isolated, however; it lies on the edge of the Asturian farming village of Villaverde which is surrounded by delightful hay meadows and apple orchards - this area is at the heart of Asturian cider making. A ten minute drive takes you to the larger village of Santillan with a restaurant, bakery and bank, although a local van can make daily food deliveries to 'La Arganosa.' The house is completely eco-friendly; electricity is provided by photovoltaic (solar) panels and the water comes from a mountain spring. Wooden floors and ceilings, no TV or washing machine and just the sound of cowbells create a simple rustic ambiance. As such, 'La Arganosa' is ideal for the independent-minded who enjoy something a little bit different.

About Maria Burton

I am a teacher, traveller and dog-lover who was enticed back to this area after a cycling holiday many years ago.

Maria Burton purchased this house in 2008

Why Maria Burton chose Amieva

The views are stunning, the locals are friendly and the interior of the house is typically rustic and Asturian with a cosy log fire. It’s magical to sit in the garden and soak in the peace and quiet of this lovely area.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Comments from guests include:

We had a fabulous time: helped, I am sure, by the wonderful weather, almost constant blue skies and comfortable 25/26 degrees. It is the most perfect mountain/beach holiday I have ever experienced, and I have been looking for that for a long time!

The house was fantastic. We have stayed in a large number of holiday cottages in the UK and Europe over the years and I have to say that La Arganosa has to be in the top three. As soon as you open the door you can see how much care and thought you have put into making it such a lovely holiday home. Thank you.

The setting is superb and it was a joy to wake every morning to the glorious views and the sound of cowbells.

What a cosy and welcoming atmosphere - the smell of the log fire, a good book and a glass of Spanish wine - a place to really relax and unwind.

Everything has gone so well, weather and walking great, house cosy and locals very friendly Relunctantly tearing ourselves away.

Peaceful And Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

Winding your way up into the mountains you find this lovely little house overlooking the town. The snow capped mountains behind lead down into the lush green valley with the prettiest cows. It is a truly stunning location. The weather and time of day bring new hues to the view from the veranda so you could just sit there all day becoming ever more relaxed and at peace. At night you can sit enjoying the stars and the hoots of the owls. We arrived in spring so got to enjoy the garden with the daffodils & tulips in full bloom. Inside it is comfortable, cosy with everything you need.

There are plenty of good walks straight from the house into the mountains or the one out the back of Pen to Santillan is well worth the effort, the bakery there do nice pasties too. The cheese factory is a short walk away and they give a warm welcome to visitors.

Maria is lovely, met us with coffee on arrival and she couldn't have made us feel more at home. Her bright personality and love of the place is infectious.

La Arganosa - a lovely house in an exceptionally beautiful and peaceful setting.

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from our second holiday at La Arganosa. We are so happy to have discovered this lovely house with its wild flower garden nestled on a beautiful hillside among lush meadows, apple orchards and hazelnut trees. How lovely it is to sit out on the veranda in the morning and watch the mist rolling across the valley and the shadows stretching across the hills beyond, and to enjoy the garden in the evening - cooking up a feast on the barbecue, listening to Owls hooting and watching a sky glittering with stars.

We've had many great days out at the Rio Dobra that winds through the valley. We discovered a fantastic spot which is perfect for swimming, diving into deep pools, and getting pummelled by a glorious natural 'jacuzzi '. We have also enjoyed lots of hiking in the surrounding hills - there are many wonderful walks you can do directly from the house or a short drive away.

Maria, the owner of the house is delightful

- always incredibly helpful and full of great suggestions for new places to discover. La Arganosa is a very special place and we are already looking forward to returning!

A special place

  • 4 of 5

Although the property is remote, it was easy to find. If anything the description and photos of the setting don't do it justice. It is a truly spectacular setting in a very beautiful part of the world. It is so quiet there.

The property was clean and comfy and had a nice feel about it. If you want 5* luxury and convenience you probably need to choose a different sort of holiday. For those who love the great outdoors, and being close to nature, Arganosa is a wise choice.

Our trip had a cycling theme, La Vuelta passing through the area. The well maintained roads in the mountains are a cyclist's dream, as long as you like climbing and descending! To get to a stage in Burgos we drove all the way up the Sella gorge - absolutely breathtaking.

The villages are pretty, the mountains inspiring and the rugged coastline hard to resist. I find it hard to believe that I won't be back some time soon.

For those who obsess about food, it is mostly quite basic. For vegetarians it isn't always easy, and you might get fed up of cheese sandwiches and Spanish omelette. But we got by, as you do away from home, and if you eat seafood it's a whole lot easier. You can always make up with the lovely, inexpensive local wine anyway! Eating out was very cheap compared to the UK.

Getting about by car is easy enough. Drivers are slower and more considerate than in the UK, and it's hard to go a km without some advice as to the speed you should be doing!

If you've not been to Asturias, you should go. Arganosa is a great base - in the heart of the quiet countryside, but near enough to villages, shops, towns, the coast and the major roads.

Getting away from it all.......

  • 4 of 5

Driving up the hill to La Arganosa and leaving the world behind - that's what it felt like. No noise. No cars. Nothing. Just the distant sound of cowbells somewhere in the surrounding valley/hills to wake you - the night before having been spent drinking the local wine, and eating the local foods, sitting out on the balcony, until God knows when, watching the shooting stars rocketing across the sky!

Daytime however was different and full of activities such as White Water Rafting, Surfing, Gorge Walking - all of which are terrific and local.

Top that off with the friendliness of the locals, and the relative cheapness of absolutely everything, I have to ask myself what the hell I'm doing back in the UK!

Comfortable, cosy and in a beautiful setting.

  • 4 of 5

This was certainly a simple retreat with stunning views. The position was idyllic-on a hillside overlooking the valley and Pen village, across to beautiful mountains.

Although we felt we were in a remote setting, neighbours in the village were very friendly and there was the additional joy of leaving a bag on the gate with 1Euro in it for the baker to leave a fresh loaf for us every day which we ate with our breakfast on the beautiful terrace.

Inside the house there was everything you could need and it was very comfortable, once we got used to the gas cooking and gas fridge.

We had the most wonderful holiday in La Argonosa despite having no tv or internet. We really felt we were in an adventure!

Maria the owner couldn't have been more helpful and the cottage exuded her love for the place.

How to fall in love with Asturias

  • 5 of 5

It is always nice when expectations are exceeded. La Arganosa and its idyllic location greatly exceeded ours.

Maria has provided local guides, maps and suggested walks that rendered much of my planning for the week unnecessary. There is enough in the 'house book' to provide a month's worth of exploration and adventure! It is possible to leave the car behind much of the time and explore the nearby villages via a network of tracks and paths. Do take the 'Mythological' walk from Pen (10 minutes down the valley) and have lunch at either Santillano or Sames. The tarmac roads are so quiet and drivers so courteous that they also afford opportunities for exploration. What a lovely walk to Argolibio we had!

A car is essential though for trips to the main town of Cangas de Onis for its shops, restaurants and Sunday market.

La Arganosa is a gem of a mountain cabin, evocative of a slower, simpler life that many can only dream of returning to. I certainly dream of returning to La Arganosa and would like to convey my warmest thanks to Maria for 'lending' it to us.

And if you don't know what Fabada Asturiana is now - you will, you will!

Further Details:

The Picos de Europa, translated as 'the Peaks of Europe', is a small but spectacular mountain range full of environmental richness. Snow clad peaks, beautiful forests, abundant wild flowers and tumbling waterfalls make this a naturalist's paradise. The Picos is home to over 70 mammal species including lynx, wolves and bears. It is ideal for bird-watchers with over 176 bird species including hawks, kites and eagles and 155 species of butterfly. Distinctive red-roofed villages, steeped in culture, combine with traditional farming activities to give the region a truly timeless quality. These mountains offer fantastic walking from gentle strolls to exciting high altitude treks amongst glaciers. There are also many world class climbing venues.

'La Arganosa' is the perfect getaway for those who wish to retreat to an alpine-feel mountain base and yet still be within easy reach of the sea and lively centres for restaurants, shops and Spanish ambiance. You can spend the day lazing in a hammock, wandering along the ancient paths which meander through the fascinating villages around the house, or venture onto the trails on the mountain slopes above the garden - without starting the car. Yet it is still easy to find something a bit more lively and head to a beach or town for the day. Nearby Cangas de Onis, on the beautiful River Sella, is the region's capital and home to Spain's largest annual canoe race. It has many restaurants with outdoor terraces, Asturian craft shops, supermarkets, internet cafes and banks. There is a busy tourist information centre, a lovely outdoor pool, a zoo, several 'siderias' (cider houses), a Sunday farmers' market and frequent fiestas and music events in the tree-lined squares. It is the place to buy the local cheeses and to try the 'fabada' dish. Cangas is the home of several Adventure Centres offering quad biking, horse riding and canoeing. Other activities include canyon descent, climbing, hang gliding, cycling, fishing and surfing.
