The villa is immersed in an old Sicilian garden with olive and lemon trees, hybiscus and bouganville in the area of Bagheria-Santa Flavia where the aristocracy used to spend their holidays in magnificent Baroque villas, some of them being now open to the public, such as Villa Palagonia better known as 'mansion of monsters', visited by 18th century famous travellers ,such as Goethe and others. The Cottages are dèpendances of a XVII century fortified manor with bastions and draw bridge, Castello San Marco, and are surrounded by an historic Mediterranean garden with pistachio, pittosporum, and rosemary. Each one is independent and has its own garden and facilities (table and chairs and barbecue) .Furniture and linen have been renewed recently. The outstanding swimming pool (m.14x7 max.depth 3m.diving board)is located in a secluded garden, near a gazebo and a bouganville arch near a green, scented thicket of pink pepper trees, where you can rest in the cool if you don't want to lay in the sun. It is to share with the owners.Open from May to September, 9h- 19h.You'll find a welcome pack with pasta, olive oil, marmelade, fresh eggs from the farm.We can provide fresh eggs for your children every day.The kitchen is well equipped with tools in case you like to prepare some special meals and we'll be happy to satisfy your special requests incase of need if possible. The sea is about 3 km. far.You have the beach of Sant'Elia or la Spiaggia dei Francesi and if you prefer to find facilities the private beaches of Porto di Spagna,Fondachello,El Rhiab. You can explore the beautiful coast by boat or scouba diving. In October the mild temperature is perfect to enjoy the quiet and empty beaches and to walk in the Nature reserves.Autumn in Sicily: perfect getaway among culture and nature.Satellite TV.

About the Owner

We live in a XVII century manor house with three children and three dogs. Each of us is involved in the family activities producing grapes, cereals, olives, making wine and olive oil, although taking care of the garden is definitely our favourite.

Beautiful holiday

  • 4 of 5

Had a lovely 2 weeks stay here in Sept 13. The cottages are spacious and well equipped and perfect for a holiday. The star attraction is the pool which is 20m x 7m and just about perfect. Comfy loungers, umbrellas, lilos and inflatable kids toys. We were lucky to have it to ourselves for most of the holiday.

You must try their own wine (the red especially). Only 6 Euros/ bottle and it's absolute nectar. We ordered 2 cases to be sent home and I've just ordered some more !

A few quibbles, the kitchen lacks a few basic items, There are times when you can't use the pool (and don't get locked in as the dogs look ferocious), we would have loved to eat The Leopard meal but discovered it was 180 Euros each ! Not sure any meal is worth that.

There's not much beach availability, even the private beach was closed for the season in September. Best beach is about an hours drive west (towards Palermo).

Do eat at Don Ciccio's in the town, exquisite and very reasonable cost. The pizza restaurant down the road is fantastic value too (22 Euros for 3 pizzas, 2 salads, bread, litre of red wine, sparkling water & coffee).

All in all a great place to stay and relax and the owner Daniele is friendly, helpful and speaks English.

Owner's Response: Dear Dave, many thanks. It was a pleasure to meet you and Giovanna at San Marco. You know that when the school begins, private beaches are normally closed.Anyway the public beaches of Sant'Elia and Spiaggia dei Francesi (3 km. driving) are quiet and beautiful in this period and on request you can arrange boat trips or scouba diving.Hope to hear from you again.Daniela

Location

Solunto
"Roman ruins where you can find Agorà,theater, painted house walls, outstanding view over the sea."

From the Owner

The manor has been built for an ancestor of the family and several generations have been living here, each one leaving a sign of its passage. Palermitan aristocrats used to spend their holidays in Bagheria area in splendid villas surrounded by magnificent gardens. Here you can enjoy the local perfumes, flavours, atmosphere, in one word you'll find yourself immersed in the indigenous culture. If you like relaxing in peace you can enjoy the swimming-pool and the chirping cicadas in the garden. If you prefer laying near the seaside you can go to Sant'Elia,a nice, peaceful village and its charming little beach or to Cefalù and its large sand beaches and turquoise sea.

Pizzerias, Sicilian restaurants and fish restaurants can be found in the sorroundings..If you like cooking, the kitchen is spacious and well equipped. In Santa Flavia can be found shops, markets and a chemistry. In June and July the weather is fantastic, the restaurants and sites of interest not so crowded and expensive like in high season. Autumn gives you the opportunity to walk in the nature reserves all in flower, visiting charming stone villages in the Madonie Park. At home we prepare the gorgeous 'Pasticcio di maccheroni', the famous dish that was served at the table of Principe di Salina (the Leopard) and the Prince himself used to cut for the pleasure of his guests that could smell its fragrance, before tasting it. You can taste the pie in a special dinner in the dining room of the Castello, the same where Tomasi di Lampedusa used to have his meals with the family during the war. We suggest you to see the BBC programme 'Carluccio and the Leopard' available on DVD that was shot in the kitchen of our villa. Yuo can taste directly in your cottage some of the dishes from our Autumn Menu and ask daily the eggs from our hens for your children.

In the main street of Bagheria (a pedestrian street) you can still find the barber shop, the bar,the butcher and fish shops where the men used to meet and discuss and still they do. In the nice little village of Ficuzza you can visit the palace where the Bourbon kings used to live during the hunting period and start a walk in the wood or climb up on the Rocca Busambra, not far from Piana degli Albanesi,a village that is famous for the rich dresses and jewels still worn by the women during the sumptuous ceremonies in the Easter period.

In Christmas time, you can admire the outstanding family"presepio" (crib) that we prepare in the hall of the castle setting in a landscape of stones, green bushes and moss the eighteenth century shepherds all in wood and papier maché,some of them wearing silk dresses richly embroidered.

Facilities

From the Owner

Living in an historic house and garden with all modern comforts. Possibility to choose between swimming-pool and sea activities. Many nature reserves can be visited in the surroundings. Monte Catalfano, Bosco di Ficuzza, Madonie Nature Park. Our cottages are particularly suitable for Autumn, Winter, Christmas and the New Year. The weather between November and March is often clement and sunny and the garden enjoyable even in Winter when almond trees and hibiscus are in flower and orange trees are full of 'golden apples', so were called oranges in the mythological Hesperides Garden. Anyway there is a good heating system and plenty of indoor space, just in case.
